Don't care where they play, just as long as it means more Minnesota-North Dakota matchups.

Glad to see we are locked in to playing them at least once a season through it looks like 2022-23.

We're back! 2 real college hockey games tonight with Western Michigan @ (20) Ferris State and (16) Lawrence @ PSU.

Glancing at the schedule, top matchups of the weekend appear to be:
    Ohio State @ (3) Denver
    (17) Michigan Tech @ (15) Mankato ... WCHA conference games already
    (15) Northeastern @ (2) Quinnipiac
    (6) UMD @ (8) UMass-Lowell

There are a couple "neutral" site games too with Air Force/BC in Denver and Wisconsin/Northern Michigan in Green Bay.

    Michigan Wolverines
    Head Coach: Red Berenson

    2015-16 Record: 25-8-5, 12-5-3 Big Ten (2nd)

Changes: The Wolverines lost many key players, notably national leading scorer and Hobey runner up Kyle Connor, who signed with the Jets after putting up 71 points and 35 goals. Junior J.T. Compher posted 63 points and also left when the season ended. Michigan lost its top four scorers in all, including Tyler Motte and defenseman Zach Werenski, a total of 226 points. The Wolverines are returning just one of their top seven scorers, Alex Kile. And the team’s next leading scorer, sophomore forward Cooper Marody, is academically ineligible for the first half of the season, per the Michigan Daily.

Michigan welcomes 11 freshmen — forwards Will Lockwood, Nick Pastujov, James Sanchez, Jake Slaker, Steven Merl, Adam Winborg, defenseman Griffin Luce, Luke Martin, Christian Meike and goaltenders Jack LaFontaine and Hayden Lavigne. Luce, Sanchez, Lockwood and Pastujov all played for the U18 National Team Development Program.

“I think Will Lockwood looks the best so far of the forwards and I think he has a chance to be an impact player,” head coach Red Berenson said. “On defense I think it’s going to take some time. We have two freshmen defensemen, Luke Martin and Griffin Luce, and I think they’re going to have to figure it out at this level, but they’re coming from the development program and they both have I think a lot of potential. And of the two goalies I would say Hayden Lavigne looks like he’s ready and he’s an older kid, he’s a 20-year-old and that Jack Lafontaine looks like he’s got great potential and he’s still a young player.”

Strength: Depth, especially on the goaltending and defensive side. The Wolverines lost much of their scoring power, but still have 14 forwards, some of whom could step up and contribute. Defensively, Michigan has nine players.

“I think the depth of our defense on paper makes me feel good, and the depth at goal,” Berenson said.

Weakness: The Wolverines have struggled defensively for a long time, a combination of offense presiding over defense and mediocre goaltending. Michigan’s success in the Big Ten last year was possible because of the team’s potent offense, but the defense barely improved.

“I think it’s been a work in progress at Michigan trying to get better defensively and we got better last year, we improved a lot,” Berenson said. “But I think we’re going to have to be even better than that this year to be a winning team so we’ve got to work on our defense and part of it is your goalkeeping, part of it is your penalty killing and part of it is your defensive attitude from the whole team. We’ve always been an offensive team that sometimes our offense was our best defense but this year we’re going to have to play better defensively than we’ve ever played.”

2016-17 Outlook: Offense was the reason Michigan won the Big Ten tournament last year, but without it the Wolverines will struggle to score and to keep opponents from scoring.

Prediction: The Wolverines won’t improve enough defensively to offset the offensive losses. (3rd)

    Michigan State Spartans
    Head Coach: Tom Anastos

    2015-16 Record: 10-23-4, 6-12-2 Big Ten (5th)

Changes: The Spartans suffered losses on both ends of the ice, losing their top two scorers and their goaltender. Leading scorer Mackenzie MacEachern, who netted 30 points last season, opted to sign with St. Louis while Michael Ferrantino, second with 26 points, graduated. Starting goaltender Jake Hildebrand, the team’s good last line of defense, graduated as well. While Hildebrand’s performance dipped slightly last year, he still started in 36 games and leave the team with an inexperienced go-to netminder in Ed Minney.

Michigan State welcomes 10 new players — Mitch Eliot, Logan Lambdin, Damian Chrecek, Patrick Khodorenko, Sam Saliba, John Lethemon, Butrus Ghafari, Taro Hirose, Spencer Wright and Anthony Scarsella. Khodorenko netted 13 points with the NTDP last season and Hirose’s 71 points ranked 13th in the BCHL. Eliot, a defenseman, captained Muskegon and scored 13 points. The Spartans also have Jerad Rosburg available, a redshirt freshman defenseman who missed all of last season with an injury.

“I think Patrick Khodorenko for sure is a very high-end talent and once he gets acclimated to this level I think he can be very impactful. I think Taro Hirose is a very highly skilled and very smart player. … [He’s a] very smart player and I think he has a potential to make an immediate impact,” Anastos said.

“I'll tell you a guy who's really caught our eye early is Mitch Eliot. He's been very impressive in the skates that we've had so far and he's a true freshman but a real student of the game, really hard-working kid, shows good leadership ability. I'm real excited about him as well."

Strength: The Spartans have players capable of good offensive seasons, such as Villiam Haag, Thomas Ebbing and Joe Cox. Both Ebbing and Haag had good freshmen years, while Cox has improved each season and finished third with 23 points last year. But the Spartans could also get more contributions from Mason Appleton and Zach Osburn, sophomores who showed promise as freshmen and combined for 41 points last season.

“I do think that the skill level of our team is probably the highest since I've been here and yet we're not overly experienced given that we have so many new guys,” Anastos said.

Weakness: Michigan State was once known for its defense and goaltending, but both have turned into weaknesses. While Hildebrand was shaky at times last season, the Spartans now have to rely on Ed Minney, a touted prospect who played in just four games last season with an .899 save percentage. But defense is the real issue. The Spartans allowed 3.35 goals per game, 49th in the country last year.

“We really struggled, we were depleted in numbers on defense, we really didn't have the kind of numbers we needed and I didn't think we did a good enough job defensively as a team,” Anastos said. “Our team defense was nowhere near where it needed to be and so our goals against, which was a real strength for us, between our commitment to defense and our goaltending was I think one of the top 10 or 15 in the country the previous year. And we gave up literally a goal more a game last year, and that's just not good enough. So our commitment to defense has to be at a very high level."

2016-17 Outlook: The Spartans lost a few key pieces and haven’t really brought anyone in to replace them. Michigan State’s success depends on past players stepping up and Minney’s performance in net.

Prediction: The Spartans lost some key components and haven’t shown they have the pieces to right the wrongs. (6th)

    Minnesota Gophers
    Head Coach: Don Lucia

    2015-16 Record: 20-17-0, 14-6-0 Big Ten (1st)

Changes: Minnesota lost a couple players, A.J. Michaelson and Ryan Reilly, to graduation. Another three players left early, all impact players — Hudson Fashing and defensemen Michael Brodzinski and Nick Seeler. While the seniors didn’t play often, Fasching’s 38 points ranked second on the team while Brodzinksi played in all 37 games and Seeler in 36. Brodzinski added 21 points.

The Gophers are bringing in a small freshmen class of six — three defensemen and three forwards. Defenseman Ryan Lindgren, brother of former St. Cloud State goaltender Charlie Lindgren, spent two seasons with the National Team Development Program and served as a captain for the U-18 team, helping win a bronze in the World Championship. Forward Rem Pitlick was named the USA Hockey Junior Player of the Year. He was also named the USHL Player and Forward of the Year after leading the league with 89 points over 56 games, a record for Muskegon.

Strength: Even with the losses, the Gophers are one of the deepest teams in the Big Ten, especially offensively. They’ve returned much of their scoring and should produce more points than last year. Returners Justin Kloos netted 43 points last year to lead the Gophers while Leon Bristedt had 37 and Tyler Sheehy had 30.

Weakness: While the Gophers are probably still the most complete team, they’ve struggled to play consistently and in non-conference games. It took Minnesota four games last year to finally record a win, and they had just four victories in 11 non-conference games to start the season. The Gophers failed to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010-11.

2016-17 Outlook: Minnesota didn’t suffer many departures and has a lot of its firepower back, a good portion of its defense and its goaltender. With a year of experience playing together, the Gophers should be a better team than last season.

Prediction: With Michigan’s scoring decimated, the Big Ten championship is Minnesota’s to take. (1st)

    Ohio State Buckeyes
    Head Coach: Steve Rohlik

    2015-16 Record: 14-18-4, 8-8-4 Big Ten (4th)

Changes: The biggest departure was senior Anthony Greco, who only posted 23 points but was one of five Buckeye players to skate in all 36 games. Ohio State graduated forward Tyler Lundey, who netted 13 points in 35 games, and defenseman Craig Dalrymple who played every contest on the blue line and also scored 13 points.

The Buckeyes have a small freshman class of three forwards and two defensemen, but a couple of the players could contribute offensively. Forward Tanner Laczynski, who was invited to National Junior Evaluation camp and ranked fourth in the USHL; Sam McCormick, younger brother of former Buckeye standout Max McCormick, scored 57 points, eighth in USHL; forward Ronne Hein was right behind him with 49 points in Waterloo.

Strength: For the past several seasons the Buckeyes have fielded a talented offense, and this year is no different. Ohio State is returning its top four scorers, including Nick Schilkey and David Gust, who had 41 and 36 points, respectively. The Buckeyes also have Mason Jobst, who led all the Buckeye rookies with 30 points.

Weakness: Like with many of their Big Ten counterparts, Ohio State’s biggest weakness is on the back end. The Buckeyes allowed 3.47 goals per game last year, which ranked 53rd in the country. Ohio State could win games last season, but a lot of them were back-and-forth scoring contests where neither team showed defense. Goaltending, which has been a tandem of Matt Tomkins and Christian Frey for the past several years, has also not supported Ohio State enough.

2016-17 Outlook: Ohio State’s offense looks to improve, and may be the only in the Big Ten doing so. The Buckeyes are fast and furious but consitency issues have prevented Ohio State from moving into the top three, offense or no offense. Without defense and goaltending, this year might be more of the same.

Prediction: The Buckeyes still don’t have the consistency or the defense needed to contend for a top spot. (5th)

    Penn State Nittany Lions
    Head Coach: Guy Gadowsky

    2015-16 Record: 21-13-4, 10-9-1 Big Ten (3d)

Changes: Penn State lost several key players and graduated a strong leadership group in Tommy Olcyzk, Luke Juha and David Glen. The most important departures for Penn State were Eric Scheid, one of the team’s leading scorers, and Eamon McAdam and Matthew Skoff — last year’s netminding duo. Skoff, who started 16 games, graduated, McAdam signed with the Islanders after logging 22 starts and a .913 save percentage. That leaves the Nittany Lions without experience in the back end.

One of the players who may solve that problem is goaltender Peyton Jones, an incoming freshman who posted a .922 save percentage in the USHL last season and helped take the Stars to the playoffs. Jones is one of 10 rookies, including Liam Folkes, Nate Sucese and Denis Smirnov.

Strength: Penn State had the nation’s sixth-best offense last year and returns a good portion of that scoring power. David Goodwin, who led the team with 38 points last season, is back, along with Andrew Sturtz and Chase Berger, who chipped in with 27 and 26 points, respectively. Despite losing four of its top seven scorers, offense is the most likely place the Nittany Lions will replicate success.

"The thing about David is he'd put up points with whoever he played with. Like I think when he had that big year with [Taylor] Holstrom and [Casey] Bailey that everybody just thought it was Holstrom and Bailey, and then when he did last year, leading the team in points was just phenomenal,” Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky said. “So he's been able to put up points playing with whoever. And we expect more of the same. He turned himself into a guy that really takes pride in his one-on-one battles.”

Weakness: Penn State played the way much of the Big Ten played last season, using more offense than defense. Penn State ranked 46th in the country with 3.21 goals allowed per game. Now the Nittany Lions are without their goaltenders, leaving the net in the very inexperienced hands of Peyton Jones, junior Matt Erlichman and sophomore Chris Funkey. Funkey is the only netminder in the group who’s seen Division I play and had a .933 save percentage in four appearances last year. It’s a limited pool of experience in a conference where offense was paramount, and the Nittany Lions struggled keeping goals out of their net.

“Obviously that's a question mark for us with Eamon McAdam signing early, although Chris Funke played really, really well when he did get in,” Gadowsky said. “We still don't have a goaltender that started a Division I game, so if Peyton Jones can adapt very quickly, that's going to be very important for us."

2016-17 Outlook: Penn State surprised everyone in the country with their leap from a fledgling Division I program to one that ranked fairly high in the Pairwise by season’s end. But with key losses in offense, defense and goaltending, Penn State will slide backwards this year.

Prediction: Penn State’s success will depend on how Peyton Jones plays in net. (4th)

    Wisconsin Badgers
    Head Coach: Tony Granato

    2015-16 Record: 8-19-8, 3-13-4 Big Ten (6th)

Changes: The biggest Badger change in the offseason came from the front office, when Mike Eaves and his coaching staff was wiped out and replaced with a trio of Badger alumni in Tony Granato, Don Granato and Mark Osiecki. Tony Granato, the new bench boss, spent the last 13 years coaching in the NHL. Three players graduated, including Kevin Schulze and captain Eddie Whichtow. But the Badgers had six other players not return to the program, including Tanner Barnes, younger brother of former Badger Tyler Barnes, and Adam Rockwood.

There are some talented players among the five freshmen joining Wisconsin this year, including JD Greenway and Trent Ferderic. Greenway and Ferderic spent the past two seasons with the National Team Development Program. Greenway, a defenseman, added 28 points last season while Frederic posted 40 points with the U.S. U-18 team.

Strength: Wisconsin has talent stockpiled on its roster. The Badgers just haven’t been able to take advantage of it in the past couple of years. Grant Besse, Luke Kunin, Seamus Malone and Cameron Hughes are skilled players who can score, and the addition of Frederic will help the team’s offense. The four were Wisconsin’s leading scorers last season, combining for 116 points.

“They’re fun to be on the ice with. It’s a very gifted group of forwards, I’ll tell you that,” Tony Granato said.

“There’s a lot of skill up front and that’s been real encouraging to see and that’s kind of hockey we want to play. We want to play a style that allows those players to be able to show those skills off.”

Weakness: Consistency has killed the Badgers in recent years. The talent has been there, but the Badgers were never able to string anything together. At times Wisconsin looked like a powerful team and they showed improvement last season, but were unable to convert performances, like a win over North Dakota, into something more.

2016-17 Outlook: Wisconsin has been an enigma of good talent but not being able to win with it. The new coaching staff should fix that, making the Badgers a team that can contend.

Prediction: With a new coaching staff, the Badgers will finally be out of the basement. (2nd)

This left out the likely biggest newcomer impact for Minnesota. Mike Szmatula sat out last year after transferring from Northeastern where he had 68 points in 73 games as a freshman and sophomore. Pitlick is the only incoming freshman that is expected to do much. A couple of the defensemen are supposed to be good but they won't get time on the power play or penalty kill because of the experienced guys we have coming back.

    From the StarTribune:
This year the Gophers were the preseason pick to win their fourth consecutive league title (it should have read 4th consecutive B1G Title because it would really be our 6th consecutive league title going back to the WCHA) in a coaches poll, followed by Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Boeser is off to a nice start with 6 goals and 6 assists in 5 games. He apparently likes playing against Bemidji as going back to last year he has 8 goals in last 3 games against them.

Nice start at 5-0 for the defending champions(so nice to type that!) but they are probably over rated at #1. I think they have the talent to be tough by end of the year but have 8 freshmen and 11 sophs on the team and might be a little light on defense this year and cannot afford any injuries. The early departures of Stecher, Thompson, and LaDue will definitely hurt us on D.

I see a lot of splits coming up on the schedule the next 4 weeks...at Duluth, at UMTC, Denver, and St. Cloud.

Ouch. Rough weekend for UND for sure. UMD was clearly the better team on Friday and UMD's goalie made some big saves early on Saturday to keep the game even and then UMD special teams finished the job for the sweep.
With series at Minnesota, Denver, and at St. Cloud next on the schedule it certainly doesn't get any easier.

UND is now 17-3-1 in last 21 games with all 3 losses coming to UMD.

I was at the Excel for the Wheeler goal and it was depressing.....thankfully the feeling only lasted a week.

And an all time favorite at Mariucci. I was sitting between the blue line and the gopher goal line for this one. decided to go stand in the SRO section after this beauty. What I really liked on this play was the unselfishness of Taylor Chorney who had a pretty good look at the net but instead made a nice drop pass to Bina for the finish!

    Close second at Mariucci

Reminds me of the Red Baron Final 5 posters they handed out to everyone walking in a few years ago at the X. It was kind of funny watching UND fans(myself included) walking and unrolling the poster and then promptly dropping them or crumpling them up and dropping them.

I don't know how they could possibly get that wrong. Its one thing when it is Comcast on a weekly tv guide but something that goes through an approval process like that is just astounding. I had a friend send me a picture of some booth at the Frozen 4 selling NDSU hats. Idiots.

Can't remember the last time I wasn't in person for a UND-Minnesota hockey series? Just have too much going on the next couple weeks with work and travel to cut out early today and make the drive. Guess I will watch it on TV, but will truly miss out on the pre-game and post game activities at Sally's and Stub n Herbs and the usually good natured back and forth with Gopher fans and tailgating and possibly attending the Gopher/Purdue game would have been fun......I only hate Gopher Athletics in one sport.:beerchug:. Usually run into a handful of UND alums at the games so that is always fun to catch up as well.

I am predicting a split but if UND can win tonight I would have no problem getting greedy!
