For very different reasons, Monday's doubleheader of Beanpot semifinal matchups was thrilling from start to finish, which concluded shortly before midnight Eastern Time Tuesday morning. The undercard featured Northeastern – historically the David (four Beanpot titles) to the Goliath that is the rest of the field (a combined 61 Beanpot championships for Boston College, Boston University and Harvard) – against Boston College. Ironically, Northeastern entered the tournament with an argument to be this year's favorite – thanks to its No. 15 PairWise ranking, the best of the four teams – and the Huskies sure played like it. They dispatched the Eagles 3-0, scoring one goal in each period with three different skaters netting a goal and four recording an assist. Northeastern goalie Cayden Primeau notched 37 saves without letting a single shot past him. Northeastern has momentum heading into the Beanpot championship, where it'll attempt to win its fifth title and its first in 30 years. But they'll have to beat Beanpot titans Boston University, which has 30 tournament titles to its name. The Terriers needed two overtime periods to separate themselves from Harvard. Ty Amonte's goal 1:55 into the second overtime proved to be the difference. BU goalie Jake Oettinger made 47 saves, holding Harvard to an 0-for-3 mark on power plays. Northeastern and BU will face off on Monday, Feb. 12, where the number "30" is of extreme significance for both sides but for very different reasons. Will the Huskies win their first Beanpot title in 30 years or will the Terriers add to their 30 Beanpot championships?
Situated at cfia for Notre Dame vs Ohio State. This should be a great one. On nbcsn for those interested
Living up to it so far. Osu gets the equalizer on a pp goal and ND answers right back to take a 2-1 lead
What a game! ND wins b1g championship in our first year in the league. Go for season sweep of osu tomorrow. That was two really good teams going at it tonight. Fun stuff
I know I congratulated you a month or so ago but congratulations for officially being the second team to win a Big Ten title.
Northeastern with a really bad home loss to UConn, 4-2 damn BU with a 3-3 tie vs UMass ahead of the Beanpot final
Let's do this once more #Ohio State Buckeyes #Notre Dame Fighting Irish Couldn't get tickets to the game, but watching on TV. Should be another good one
I love playoff hockey, and whenever I get the chance I love watching ncaa hockey. The beanpot is fun, the nhl really needs to consider a shorter regular season
Seeing how you've wrapped everything up laxjoe a split next weekend would be very accommodating for our tournament profile, thanks.
I really did not understand what you were trying to say, but I am half drunk so it might explain the confusion
The way the pairings currently lay-out. 1. SCSU* vs. 36. Canisius* 8. Providence vs. 9. Minnesota 2. Denver vs. 21. Boston College* 7. Clarkson vs. 10. Nebraska-Omaha 3. Notre Dame* vs. 16. Northern Michigan* 6. Ohio St. vs. Minnesota Duluth 4. Cornell* vs. 13. Western Michigan 5. Mankato St. vs. UND *-denotes teams leading their conferences and taking the auto-bid spots last teams out 14. Michigan 15. Northeastern 17. Penn St. 18. Bowling Green 19. Boston U 20. Wisconsin Not sure how much flipping they would do for attendance reasons. UND is only host team in tourney currently so they are in Sioux Falls, SD. I would guess they would put Notre Dame regional in Pennsylvania. Denver has a plane ride no matter which region they are in and Cornell is about the same distance from either East regional but they would have to flip the entire DU/BC and Cornell/WMU games to make it happen since DU and WMU cannot play in first round. Still lots of jockeying left to go, but the top 7 all seemed to be locked into finishing in the top 8 or 9. The teams ranked between 8 and 20 are still pretty volatile. I know going into this weekend, UND was 8th but mathematically were closer to 20th than 7th. Teams that can make a move with wins against higher ranked opponents. Notre Dame has a home and home against Michigan which could solidify their position as long as they don't dump one to Sparty the following weekend. Michigan really needs to beat Notre Dame at least once as they finish with Arizona St. which is a drag on your ranking just playing them at this point in the season. The Gophers are surging right now and have Ohio St. at home this weekend which would be a huge weekend if either of them could sweep. Gophers finish at Penn St. Penn St. has a must sweep this weekend at Michigan St. before the Gophs visit the following weekend. Ohio St. has Minnesota and Wisconsin and could possibly move into a 1 seed with 3 wins. Cornell has 4 games and probably needs to win all 4 to hold onto a 1 seed. Clarkson is probably in the same boat as they need to take care of their last 4 games to maintain a 2 seed....not much chance for them to move up with their schedule. BC will have a hard time moving with their final 5 games as well. Except down if they lose any. Providenc has 3 games left ands they probably need to win all 3 to hold onto the last 2 seed and that might not be enough in Minnesota runs out their schedule. Northeastern has the beanpot title game with BU and then 4 games that any losses in would hurt their spot. The WCHA will likely be sending Mankato to the tournament and the only way another team makes it would be to win the conference tourney. Atlantic Hockey will be sending only their conference champ. Most of the potential for movement in the pairwise leading into the conference tournaments will come from the NCHC which currently has 6 of their 8 teams in position to receive bids. SCSU has WMU, Denver, and UND left on their schedule. 4 wins probably locks them into the 1 or 2 overall seed. Denver has Colorado College, SCSU, and Miami left and 5 wins would probably give them the overall #1.Omaha has a huge series this weekend at home against UND, then CC at home followed by a trip to Duluth. If they spit with UND and UMD and sweep CC they should be sitting pretty good. WMU has opporunty to make a move the next couple weeks with home games against SCSU and UMD and then they finish at CC. UMD has a must win series at home against Miami and then a road trip to Kalamazoo and they finish at home against UNO. UND has put themselves in a tough spot as they probably need to win 4 of last 6 to be safe. 2 at UNO, 2 at Miami, and 2 at home against SCSU.
Northeastern and BU will be meeting in the Beanpot for the third time in the last four seasons, and 42nd time in tournament history. The Terriers lead the series, 33-8, including wins in 17 of the last 18 meetings. Monday marks the 13th time that the teams will meet in the championship, with BU leading that series 9-3. Northeastern defeated the Terriers in the 1984, 1985 and 1988 championship games. NESN tomorrow night
Harvard beat BC 5-4 in OT. When NU beat BC last week, it was BC's third straight Beanpot loss. They hadn't lost three straight Beanpot games since 1975. I wonder when the last time they lost four straight was? Adam Gaudette is such a bad ass 2-1 Huskies leading the Terriers after the first period
Sikura with the assist on Gaudette's second goal of the night as he puts NU up 4-1 with just seconds left in the second period Huskies are gonna end a 30-year Beanpot drought
Fuck this season. It was supposed to be our big step forward, but we went the wrong way. Sucks to suck
UND looks great tonight...well 5 on 5 anyway. If you can't kill penalties you probably shouldn't take penalties...especially when the puck is 200 feet away from your net. Gave up 3 power plays goals and a couple empty netters and lost for the first time ever in Omaha's Baxter Arena losing 6-3 after leading 3-1. On the bright side it is looking like I will be saving some travel and hotel money in March.
last night's win secures the Huskies a bye into the Hockey East quarterfinals, and moves Northeastern to within three points of first place in the Hockey East standings with three games remaining. The Huskies are in third place, one back of Providence for second with a game in hand
With the last games of the weekend in and the pairwise updated, here is what I come up with. Bridgeport, CT 1-SCSU*(100%) vs. 26-Mercyhurst*(27%) 8-Minnesota(99.9%) vs. 9-Providence(97%) Allentown, PA 2-Notre Dame*(100%) vs. 21-Boston College*(25%) 7-Clarkson(98%) vs. 10-Minnesota-Duluth(83%) Worcester, MA 3-Cornell*(100%) vs. 14-Nebraska-Omaha(50%) 6-Ohio State(100%) vs. 12-Northeastern(83%) Sioux Falls, SD 4-Minnesota State-Mankato*(100%) vs. 13-North Dakota(69%) 5-Denver(100%) vs. 11-Michigan(95%) On the bubble 15-Western Michigan(32%) 16-Northern Michigan(38%) 17-Penn State(18%) 18-Bowling Green(33%) 19-Boston University(16%) 20-Union College(11%) *-denotes leading conference so default conference champion ****--I added the probability of making the tournament.
last night's 4-1 win at Vermont secured home ice for Northeastern in the Hockey East quarterfinals for the first time since 2009 Gaudette with two goals he now has 50 points on the season
