give us the coordinator hotboards
Think anyone will come with him off the current staff?
You'd think at minimum, he'd take an analyst or two and give them an on field role.
Jay Johnson is an interesting name
People seem to think he could take an assistant S&C guy and possibly Jay Johnson, analyst that used to be an OC and seems like a great coach imo
This is who I thought he would take with him once his name was mentioned with various jobs.
Here's another name to watch. I haven't heard his name mentioned as someone who could leave, just a guess. Eason and Fromm both spoke really highly of him.
Pretty cheap contract, hopefully he gets a big staff pool.
If I've learned anything from the Richt > Kirby transition it's this: give him whatever the hell he wants.
I’d take 6-6
Gonna start 5-0 again
Would be dope if he could get Tee Martin on board in a non playcalling role
Pretty crazy that guys take jobs like this sight unseen.Though I'm sure he saw pictures and maybe a virtual tour or something like that.
"This is a no excuse program, as of right now"
If we keep a bunch of these ACs we can just start looking for our next coach. Bush league shit.
I feel like there’s no way he would have touched this job knowing any assistants (or just a number of the whole) would be forced on him.
Im likely overreacting but I just can't wrap my mind around anyone other than Chev or Drake.
Hagan - see depth chart
Roper - seems pretty generic
Bernardi/Adams - lol
Brown/Ambrose - secondary got worse this year.
Els - never liked him. Doesnt seem to recruit.
Wilson - meh. Get some SEC Deer Antler dealer.
Good to see the old lunatic still has a way with words
Glad we let Mel sign before letting McCartney talk
If CU really wanted to keep Hagan around (and more importantly, Coach Tucker agreed to it - only shit programs force hires, whether they be assistants or in operations, on a new HC IMO), he seems like he would be a good candidate for moving back into an off field role, kinda like he held before under HCMM (he was Director of Player Personnel from 2013-2015 IIRC).
As for the other assistants...
I'm for keeping Chev, though probably as a Co-OC at most (with someone else, ideally with more experience, that Coach Tucker brings in from outside)
I am largely for keeping Drake unless Coach Tucker has someone better in mind
Maybe Roper (unless Coach Tucker can find an upgrade, which I'd gladly take given the importance of a quality QB coach)
I would think Coach Tucker will likely part ways with all of the other assistants
Definitely. Maybe he'd be a good name to pair with Chev as the more experienced Co-OC I referenced above (with Johnson having final say on play calling / game planning) or as a QB coach if Roper is not retained?
In looking over stories about him online, the other thing that becomes apparent is that we really need to step up our game when it comes to our Quality Control positions and other off field support staff roles. Those positions/roles have been very important in helping a lot of premier programs maintain their edge over other programs (since there is no cap by the NCAA on how many you can hire, unlike on field assistants).
He better be getting demoted.
So Chiv and Hagan staying. I hope Drake is the only other guy he's even considering keeping.
#Georgia Bulldogs tell us about our new OC, and please give us Dan Lanning. Thanks.
Brilliant offensive mind. Not sure he is the best in game play caller, but in terms of creating an offensive game plan, dude is about as solid as they come. His offenses set all kinds of records playing against group of 5 competition, which shows he is really good at finding and exploiting weaknesses of the defenses he plays. The offense he coached at Minnesota went 9-4, was 4th in scoring offense. Solid hire and good coach. No idea on his recruiting abilities.
BOOM. Go Dawgs
we were pretty excited when we hired Jay
great hire imo
Tell Mel to go away now imo
Kinda bummed Lanning said no.
That was a big win for us because he is key to recruitment of Nolan Smith and Nakobe Dean. Think most of us expected Mel to try to raid the staff and would probably get a couple of people to follow him. Most of us assumed if offered, Jay Johnson would follow.
He rumored to get promoted to DC?
We aren't hearing anything like that on our end. None of our major DB targets are committing on ESD, so I think Kirby will take his time to hire the right DB coach. If we promote from within, it will like be Glenn Schuman, our ILB coach. Although there is a belief that we are waiting until the end of the NFL season to make a run at Derrick Ansley with the Raiders to come in as a DB coach and DC.
OC/QB - Johnson
OC?/WR - Chiv
RB - Hagan
DL - Drake
LB - Els
SC - Wilson
Hopefully all this money was saved for an elite OL coach
Els staying? Come on.
Tucker's entire career has been east of the Mississippi and even though he's coached under some outstanding coaches with fairly big coaching trees, those are all east of the Mississippi too. Chiv and Hagan are our best California recruiters so it makes some sense to keep them on given how important California is for our recruiting. Seems the message is clear: recruiting is going to be a major focus, as it should be.
Agreed but fuck Ross Els. I'm fine with the other 3. I know the players like him but what has he recruited? Isn't the JC LB a question to come now?
Good with this
I went to the same high school (for a bit) as Hagan. Had to leave because I lived on the wrong side of the 110 freeway. Was a gang issue not a wrong school issue.
He's a good coach and a solid recruiter
The hell is your issue with Els? Special teams outside of Blackmon were fine and that was a MM issue.
Husker stench and what has he recruited?
With the news that Coach Tucker will be retaining Chev/Hagan/Els/Drake and hiring Jay Johnson as OC, that leaves him with five other on field positions to fill.
I'll be very curious to see how Coach Tucker spreads those out / which position groups (if any) he intends to assign multiple coaches towards.
I’m good with retaining those 4. Thought Els did a really good job actually. Think Drake will flourish as a recruiter under HCMT. Chev took a demotion which is good. Hagan is Hagan. Hopefully recruiting expectations will be increased.
Now break the bank on a OL/Asst. HC.
Given some of our struggles there in recent years, what would people think of taking a page out of the Denver Broncos' playbook and hiring two OL coaches (one for working with interior OL and the other to work with the tackles)?
You could group TE's in with WR's for passing drills and then have them go work with the tackles during practice periods more focused on blocking (plus you could assign a GA to work with our TE's as well) since that'd leave the staff without someone specifically assigned to the TE's & H-backs.
I'm just throwing this out there as an idea FWIW, I have no idea whether it's something actually being considered.
Husker stench is a stupid reason to dislike him as a coach. He did a good job here, that's what matters. Can take a look at his recruit list on 247.
Pell, Smith, Moore(quit) and Allen(grades won't make it).
