Rumor has it Paul Richardson lifted with the team today. That could be a positive sign for him being cleared to practice.

Will know for sure in a couple hours tho.

BOULDER — Moments after the newest member of the Colorado football team caught his breath following Friday's 2 1/2-hour practice, freshman wide receiver Paul Richardson reflected on how close he might have come to never having a college career.

In June, Richardson had been kicked out of the UCLA program following an off- the-field incident that involved two other Bruin recruits and the alleged theft of a woman student's backpack. The three were initially charged with felony theft. They were prohibited from enrolling at UCLA for the fall quarter, and the school released them from their national letters of intent.

Colorado, which had recruited against UCLA and others in an attempt to land Richardson out of Serra High School in Gardena, Calif., accepted the 6-foot-1, 175-pounder after a district attorney decided to withdraw the felony charge — and following what CU called a "rigorous review process" to examine Richardson's past and determine any potential personal-conduct issues.
CU coach Dan Hawkins has said he will not have a convicted felon on his roster. Richardson still could face a lesser charge but is relieved he can move on.

"For a moment," Richardson said, he thought he might never play major-college football. "But my family is very religious and so we stayed in prayer, stayed very positive about it. God gave me another chance, and I'm going to make the most of it.

"It was a silly mistake. I'm young. I definitely learned my lesson."

Richardson was rated a four-star prospect and as high as the nation's 22nd-best wide receiver by Scout.com. Richardson initially chose UCLA over an initial list of suitors that also included Washington, California, Arizona and Arizona State. He caught 110 passes during his high school career with 28 touchdowns.

"He can play," senior wideout Scotty McKnight said after watching Richardson practice Friday. "He's a tall, lanky kid. He can jump. Good hands. I can see why he was highly recruited coming out of high school."

When asked about giving second chances, Hawkins said: "Once is a mistake, twice is behavior. That's been our deal. He knows that."

On Friday, Colorado also welcomed the return of senior wideout Andre Simmons, who successfully overcame academic hurdles during the final summer term that ended Friday. Sophomore tight end Clark Evans watched practice in street clothes and apparently is awaiting test scores.

Finalizing the eligibility status of another potential addition to the receiving corps, Southern Cal transfer Travon Patterson, likely will not be determined until next week, according to Colorado officials.

Re: *OFFICIAL COLORADO BUFFALOES THREAD* ->Winning road games is optional<-

Have spoken with a couple donors and received info from others close to the team that have been up to every practice and have spoken with many coaches and here is what I've been told...

-Most are pleasantly surprised by this latest recruiting class. Everyone thinks the TE's look great; Griffon and especially Mobley. Those two seem to be getting a little bit better reviews than Slavin at this point, but Slavin also sounds solid. He's just not as athletic as the other two.

-Despite all the ranting and raving on Rivals, no one I've spoken with believes that Smith will be replacing Perkins or Polk THIS year. However, it does sound like he will push Orms quite a bit for playing time at the nickel slot if he keeps playing the way he has. I'm told he makes plays all over the field and the staff had replacing Chap Brown in mind when recruiting him and believe they got a carbon copy and were highly successful with that idea.

-Robert Prince told somebody I know yesterday that he thinks Hirschman ought to be the second string QB right now so they can get him some reps this fall to be better prepared next year as the back-up. In fact, Prince believes that Hirsch could push Hansen for the starting job next year.

-Cody has been his usual consistent self. Makes a decent pass and then throws a pick six on the next play to Jalil Brown (that happened today for a long TD return).

-Allen looks the most ready to play of the frosh RB's. That is not only because we need a bigger back, but because he seems to be picking things up quicker than the others and making more plays.

-Tony Jones looks very good, although three of the four people I spoke with believe he should take a redshirt year to thicken up a bit.

-A couple of people I spoke with believe that Trea Jones should move to defensive back. Mind you he looks pretty good as a RB, but the others look better and he might be more useful to the team in the secondary. (not to toot my own horn but every report I have heard about regarding the frosh RB's is exactly what I predicted might happen. )

-Torres looks better than advertised but he might need to stay at RB because it sounds like he looks closer to 5-11, 190 than the 6-0, 215 he is listed at so he might not be capable of a switch to one of the LB'ing positions.

-Our kicking looks awful. A guy that went to practice today said he believes they missed about 10 straight FG's and were about 2-for-15 in live situations.

-Grossnickle sounds like he will boot a 50-yarder and then come right back with a 25-yard shank on a consistent basis. It sounds like many of our worst fears regarding the kicking and punt games are coming true thus far.

-Bahktiari sounds like he is tearing it up and the staff really had an eye for talent when deciding to recruit him. It sounds as if Givens isn't necessarily running second team just because he missed the spring, but because Bahk is going to be tough to beat out. To me, this sounds like a blessing because I would then love which ever guy doesn't start at RT to move to LG. I know it's not that easy, but I believe we need to find anyway we can to get the best starting five on the field and I DO NOT like the sound at all of Adkins and Stevens starting at C and LG. That was a disaster last year. I don't think either one of them are very good players so combined they aren't very cohesive. We need to find someone else to start at LG besides Adkins, imo.

-I heard, once again, that Richter seems more like a stiff, strong guy than an athlete that can move. No one sounds real impressed with his game other then having a lot of strength.

-Munyer appears to be getting very good reviews which is a sigh of relief. I thought the guy would be decent for us as long as he stays at center and it sounds like he is very athletic. I still believe he will need to stay at Center, though. The kid is only 6-1, 280, or whatever. So to me, he will need to be a center or move over to defense at tackle.

-Not to toot my own horn again (but I will ) but it sounds like Poston has been less than impressive as a D-end and they are already experimenting with him on the inside. When he was recruited, I thought number one, there was no way he had the offers he claimed or he wouldn't have been a Buff and number two, he was going to have to be a defensive tackle. So hopefully he can be a future DT for us and not a waste of a scholarship.

-Despite all of Canty's rave reviews, the people I have spoken with were less optimistic about him. They don't think he is very fast and he has a very hard time getting off the ball when going up against bigger DB's. He is very quick but it definitely sounds like he is going to have to be a slot/situational player for us.

-This is a double-edged sword. Everyone has been very impressed with the O-line but that comes at the expense of being unimpressed with the D-line. It sounds like they are missing West as the unit as a whole is having a very tough time stopping the run.

-It sounds like Mahnke got some time with the 1's today at LB in place of Major. That is kind of interesting. I personally would make Mahnke miss an entire year for the lack of effort he displayed at times in the past, but maybe that's just me.

-A couple people believe that we might have seen the last of MTM which makes sense to me. I mean, the second day into a non-padded practice and he already tweaked one of his very tender knees? Doesn't sound good. I think the kid really needed to go on that mission to give his body a couple years to regroup but since he didn't, maybe he ought to just hang it up now before he does irreparable damage?

-Castor looks like crud so far kicking FG's.

-Evan Harrington appears to have great lateral movement and should see some quality playing time this fall.

-Sipili--this was agreed upon by all I spoke with--appears to be in the most peak physical condition he's been in and is poised for a strong senior season.

-Solder still seems to have trouble picking up shorter, faster DE's. I guess when they've lined up Rippy and Beatty on him a few times he's had trouble. Oh, and Beatty didn't practice today with a slight hobble in his step. I don't know what the injury was but my source said it didn't seem serious.

-Jered Bell looks very impressive. He might push for time as our 3rd corner this fall. Sounds like he will push Olatoye for that spot.

-Lowell Williams is very fast but will probably need a redshirt year because he is very thin for a LB.

-No one has been very impressed with Crabb. Sounds like he showed up out-of-shape which might be the reason he isn't looking very athletic.

-Evans still isn't practicing. One of my sources believes he may be ineligible for the season and that will be decided any day now.

-Everyone agrees that the two most athletic WR's are Clemons and Simmons.

-Richardson looks very good. Got some more info on him. Apparently, he was the "ring leader" on that little theft charge back in Cali and the UCLA coaches are surprised CU took him because he is "kind of a punk". So let's hope he keeps his head on straight because apparently Hawkins has already told him even though his arrest didn't take place in Boulder, he is still counting it as his first strike so he's been told if he gets in trouble again, he's gone.

All in all, everyone I spoke with has raised their season win total by a game or two after seeing the team. Some of them are very cynical people, too. It sounds like the Buffs are definitely bigger, faster and stronger and are making believers out of even the most pessimistic of followers.

Junior college transfer Evan Harrington has been one of the standout newcomers in summer practice sessions, according to his teammates. Now that camp has started, Harrington is hoping to impress coaches. Get inside for more.

Evan Harrington has a big number to fill. One of the better linebackers in recent memory at Colorado – Thaddaeus Washington – wore the same No. 49 jersey Harrington will wear this year during his first season with the Buffs after transferring from College of the Canyons in California.

Harrington has similar size and mentality to Washington which should get CU fans excited about his future in Boulder.

Harrington is expected to play one of two inside linebacker positions in the Colorado defense and might be tough to keep off the field once he really begins understanding the defense. He said he is already feeling good about the system with camp in its second day.

”I think I've learned the basic stuff,” Harrington said. “I'm starting to learn where I'm supposed to be and what I'm supposed to be doing. There is always room to get better. I think I'm just open. I'm ready to learn.”

The 5-foot-11, 225-pound junior said veteran players such as Michael Sipili and Jon Major have been very willing to help him through the adjustment and teach subtle tricks as well as his assignments. Harrington said he prefers the Will position, currently manned by Major. It is the spot he played the past two years in junior college.

”My expectation is to come in and help wherever coaches need me,” Harrington said. “I just feel like I have to learn the play book, of course, and just establish their trust and make plays. If I make plays, I have no doubt that I will probably be on the field.”

One of the most appealing parts of joining the Colorado program for Harrington was the opportunity to learn from linebackers coach Brian Cabral, who has been at CU since 1989 and has coached numerous players to NFL careers. Harrington has three years to play two.

”He just expects full effort and for us to give it our best,” Harrington said. “And learn the play book. That's the key. Know what we're doing out there. Don't just be running out there like a chicken with our head cut off.”

Re: *OFFICIAL COLORADO BUFFALOES THREAD* ->Winning road games is optional<-

Tempers were flaring Sunday evening as the Buffs conducted a spirited practice in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets. Several skirmishes broke out as the defense tried to redeem itself from a poor showing Saturday. Get inside for more

Middle linebacker Michael Sipili absolutely blasted running back Brian Lockridge along the sidelines early in Sundays practice setting the tone for the day.

One-on-one drills with the offensive and defensive lines got heated at several points, including freshman Kirk Poston ripping off his helmet a trying to go after veteran offensive lineman Matt Bahr. Several teammates had to hold Poston back.

Even quarterback Tyler Hansen got into the act throwing the ball back at defensive back Jalil Brown after scoring a touchdown on the run.

Wide receivers and defensive backs got after each other throughout and at one point secondary coach Ashley Ambrose and wide receivers coach Robert Prince starting arguing with each other defending their players.

It was entertaining to say the least and not a good day to miss practice if you were in Boulder.

"It's good. I like the energy, I do," coach Dan Hawkins said. "There is always a fine line and stuff like that is going to happen if you're competitive. But when you're stupid and you go chase somebody down and pop em in the back of the head and continue beyond a certain point, I have no patience for that. That's not smart football.

"But you're going to get, going against these same guys all the time, if you're competitive at all, it's going to get that way a little bit, and I'm OK with that."

There was another humorous moment when a man wearing a Cal shirt and pushing a baby stroller stopped by to watch. Hawkins yelled at his operations staffers, "Who let the Cal shirt in here." Players implored the man to take it off.

Turns out, Patrick Grychtol, is not even a Cal fan. He is a visiting scientist on the CU campus from Germany and had just come back from visiting a friend in California where he picked up the shirt. He and his son were allowed to stay at practice of course. No word on whether his friend's name happened to be Jeff Tedford.
