So, I decided to buy Star Wars: The Old Republic. Before I did, I went to the can you run it website and got the results below. I bought it anyway. Sure enough, it runs slow as hell. I really want to play this game and other PC games as well. Here are my results from the website: Can I upgrade something on my current computer that will solve the problem?
I play this as well and I love the game, I have an amd phenom II x2 550 processor with 3.10 ghz, 12 gb ram, and a nvidia gtx 550 ti and most of the time it runs perfect but will slowdown sometimes. Biggest hold back I see immediately might be processor, ram, or video card but probably video card, new computer might be the only way =/
Yeah having to upgrade CPU would suck. "Had to" upgrade RAM and Vid Card to get it to work on mine. Somehow CPU was fine, considering how old the PC is.
The website for the game says you only need 2.0 GHz. Even though you have a Pentium instead of the Core 2 duo, you should still be fine I would have thought being at 3.0 GHz.
But that is most likely your problem. Pentiums have smaller cache sizes, which usually doesn't make that big of a difference, but that would be my best guess.
New graphics card and you can probably get by on low settings, just make sure you have a power supply that can keep it cool. If you're going to want to play more PC games, you're going to need an entire system upgrade soon. If you research it a little and are patient enough to wait for sales, you can build your own that can run anything for under $700.
For instance, I am about halfway through the process of collecting parts for a new CPU. I have one rigged together from about 3 old computers I have torn apart and put back together. Newest part was bought in 07. Runs Old Republic fine on low. kcutb: How much RAM will your motherboard support? (Easy way to find out is go to Crucial.com and run their system scanner) . You already have 64 bit windows so you might as well go up to at least 8GB since memory is so cheap now. If you want to replace your CPU, just google for your motherboard and figure out what your options are. A processor is extremely easy to replace. Cza: Reinstall windows as 64bit windows and upgrade your RAM. can't imagine having only 2GB RAM. How do you even use the internet? Your computer is worse than my mom's. Even if you don't reinstall windows and stay with 32bit, at least go to 4GB, for the love of God. Will cost you about 25 bucks.
haha, this old bitch is fine for another month. I'm not putting any more money into it, regardless of how cheap it is. I am hoping it dies while trying to play Mass Effect 3 forcing me to get to work on my build.
I'm terrible with computer hardware. I was knowledgeable about five years ago, but I let it go and now so much has changed that I am going to need to reeducate myself. The reason for starting this thread was really just to find out how much it would cost to upgrade my current computer to a decent gaming pc. I'm not even sure what exactly it is that I need to upgrade. That was my exact thought process. Here's a screencap of the results. Is this what I need to upgrade or is it my video card? PS: Thanks for the help.
Looks like your motherboard won't support more than 4GB memory, so that sucks. Not sure how much better of a video card you could match with that motherboard since your power supply is probably pretty weak as well At this point I'd recommend saving up about $500 for a desktop.
Yup, even if you wanted to cheap it, you'd end up spending $150 on a power supply and Graphics card so might as well just get all new since that $150 would get you lowest performance. In other words, you'd be putting $150 into a computer that would sell for about $30 at a pawn shop or on craigslist.
Here's a good place to start if you don't want to build your own and want performance gaming. Not sure it comes with an operating system or anything though. http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/AMD_FX_4-Core_Configurator
Good luck with it so far? Never purchased from there, but always heard that was the place to do it if you didn't want to do a build.
Yeah i've had it for about two years now..was an early i5 build that I found a deal on. Haven't had any hardware issues and it came wired up real nice. First time I opened it up to add memory I got a nerd boner from how neat the wires were tucked out of the way, like a tranny penis.
haha. I have my shitbox in a really old Acer case, I needed the extra room for 2 extra fans because my card blows out my processor. You can barely even get to the memory slots with how many wires have in there, it's probably a fire hazard honestly. I tried to add a bigger slave drive last fall and couldn't even find enough space to unscrew and remove it.
I want to build a cheap gaming computer and googled to see what was out there. I found this: PartsLinksPrice (USD) -Case: APEX TX-381-C Black Steel Micro ATX Tower Computer Case 30$ -Motherboard: BIOSTAR A780L3B AM3 AMD 760G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard 45$ -Optical Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner 20$ APEX AL-D500EXP 500W ATX12V Power Supply 45$ -Processor: AMD Athlon II X3 455 Rana 3.3GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor 80$ -RAM: G.SKILL Value Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model F3-10600CL9S-4GBNT 20$ -Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive 70$ -Video Card: PowerColor AX6570 Radeon HD 6570 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 Video Card 60$ -Subtotal: 370$ It gives a justification on the website for each part and this was posted in June so it isn't too old. I can afford to spend a little more on the video card if I need to or whatever is out there. Wondering if this is worth it. This would be my first attempt at building a computer. Really just want to play the new Guild Wars 2 game on it.
