I googled H5N1 and it looks like it’s been busy https://scitechdaily.com/mass-morta...ecimates-argentinas-elephant-seal-population/ This is an interesting read for those of us that didn’t minor in virology https://www.newswise.com/articles/why-the-bird-flu-s-jump-to-pigs-is-concerning
Really dumb question probably, but how hard would it be to modify the flu shot to cover this? isn’t it 4 common strains for that year? 2-A and 2-B strains? edit - should have googled first https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H5N1_vaccine
I guess that makes me feel a little better that, given how long the concern about Bird Flu has been around, there's a lot of research already on vaccination. Of course our new fucking administration could gut the FDA and force us all to get sick intentionally.
It's basically like 9/11 for me, probably for a lot of us, in how I remember things pre and post COVID.
2015/2016 was the start and then covid and George Floyd's death just doused a smoldering flame with gasoline. 2020 was such a fucking insane year to be alive. And the weirdest thing for me personally is none of my wife/me/kids have ever been covid positive. Have taken the tests a bunch of times because of symptoms and have never been positive nor had any of the telltale taste/smell shit. Very strange for me because basically everyone else I know has tested positive at least once.
I think a couple of other posters got into studies, but I was able to get into Moderna's Phase 3 trial in Atlanta. I basically never bring it up now, even with people who aren't shitty skeptics and vaccinate, because everyone just hates remembering it.
Literally everyone I know, including wife and kids multiple times, has tested positive for Covid - except for me. This is how I know bird flu will kill me.
Bo Burnham's special is going to be looked at as some weird period piece in a decade. There aren't a lot of other good ways to feel what it felt like to live through that imo
like i don’t want to go back but something about those first few weeks was thrilling and exciting in a terrifying sense if that makes sense
In all seriousness, we should start a new thread then. Having the knowledge ahead of the last pandemic helped me by preparing my wife, preparing my team, and knowing mentally how long a return to normal might take. Obviously there are other variables this Trump term, and I can’t see people pushing WFH again nor working rapidly to vaccinate, but it can help us navigate.
I remember talking with friends about if we hoped it would be “over” in time for football season. I didn’t really comprehend how much it was going to impact so many things forever at the time but I had my priorities straight.
i built a fire pit in an effort to develop the vaccine quicker. it didn’t help with the vaccine development tbh
I think my reaction was opposite, but yes, felt like shit Had shingles 2x before I could get shot. Luckily, neither outbreak was bad like I had expected. I had seen what it did to a great aunt.
Thoughts and prayers to the MAGA, RFK Jr, raw milk drinking antivax crowd Spoiler to get scared straight Spoiler they won't
The good news is we know SO much more about influenza and H5N1. It’s the lack of the administration taking it seriously, gathering data, and sharing data is the problem right now. Vaccines could be spun up pretty quickly here. H2H is still probably fairly rare. We’ll see.
I remember working a night shift at the time when Tom Hanks tested positive and the NBA and NHL games started being postponed because of Covid. It was a surreal night with that happening in real time and worrying about how bad it would be.
This happening the day after Blizzard announced fresh classic servers for World of Warcraft, let's fucking go, boys, we are so back
Assume we’re all just gonna be required to shoot ivermectin and sarms now with RFK jr , hopefully I get jacked from the sarms
Covid for the 60+ year olds killed about 1 in 4 at its worst iirc. Bird flu possibly killing 1 in 4 (age groups not specified) to 1 in 3 is.....better than >1 in 2
Walking Pneumonia has been going around here. All the kids are getting colds then getting it. Antibiotics knock it right out.
I currently have walking pneumonia, but I'm on the down side of it. Started feeling better yesterday. Chuckled a little when they said I had "walking" pneumonia, because I was on my ass for about 4 days.
I am now at 10 weeks of coughing and added a sinus infection on top of it. They tested me for whooping cough on Monday and did another round of steroids/zpack but said if that doesn’t work I need to go for more testing
I had, I think, a cold early last week and have had a cough (not surprising) along with a lot of sinus drainage since then, the first couple of days with a huge amount of pressure in my head. Every time I laugh I have a coughing fit. I'm at least not coughing anywhere near hard enough for a whooping cough though so that sucks, hopefully you're getting at least an ab workout. Name P. Redacted I got sick again and somehow the rest of my family didn't which is the mathematical inverse of how things normally work.
I got the whooping cough results back this morning and it was negative. Not sure if that should make me feel better or worse.
