I trust the science just fine. But I'm gonna need a whole lot more than "We found 6 people out of 6.8 million who suffered blood clots" in order for me not to seriously question the decision making here. Based purely on those numbers the FDA needs to fucking explain themselves. Like right now
Yeah I don't get it, either, but I don't know enough to get it. Guessing/thinking they believe there are more cases out there
the experts may know what they're doing scientifically but their complete mishandling of the PR aspect and seemingly ignorance to the stupidity of the average american has caused so many problems. from the "you don't need a mask" lie at the beginning to the j&j situation now, they've really fucked it all to hell
i'm a home health PT and evaluated a patient yesterday, a 50ish year old female teacher. she got her 2nd moderna dose on wednesday 3/31, had some shoulder/chest soreness thursday but figured it was normal. friday developed a very bad headache and shoulder blade pain, but again a normal-ish symptom. saturday when she woke up and started brushing her teeth, her whole right arm and face went numb and she couldnt hold her toothbrush or speak. family rushed her to the hospital where she had 205/190 BP and they administered TPA (super fast acting blood thinner) and her symptoms started subsiding within a few hours. scary shit but she was like 90% back to normal when i saw her yesterday
I’ll take things that can happen independent of each other for $1,000 Alex. I did get a chuckle out of a patient yesterday confiding in me as I placed a drain in her pus-filled gallbladder that it was “that damn moderna messing me all up.”
for sure, not saying one caused the other (if you’re referring to my story). gonna be obviously bad timing of things with millions of people getting the vaccine
I'm moreso having to deal with other people thinking they're immune to COVID now because either: A) They got 1/2 vaccines or B) People think they have the worlds greatest immune system because they didn't get COVID in the past mixed with other people at work have gotten the vaccine means they don't need to worry about it. I sent two people home about an hour ago because I walked into a high traffic area at work and there were way too many people in the room and two of the people didn't have their mask on. One of the people in the room recently had heart surgery due to presumed lingering effects from COVID.
This is my exact thought. If I trusted the country to have a detailed, nuanced conversation, I wouldn’t have an issue with them pausing it. This will kill our chances of getting people on the fence to take any of the 3 vaccines. They’re already cancelling appointments and vaccine drives in some parts of the country that were going to give JNJ. Some won’t reschedule. The Facebook disinformation will be in overdrive. the fact that some people actually think “the people concerned about this will just take moderna/pfizer instead” and actually think that the average person knows it’s a different type of vaccine and this has no impact on those 2 vaccines just shows how little people know about the average American.
What are the odds of a complication from someone getting any other vaccine? I guess I figured if you took 7 million people and told me that 6 would die from blood clots over a few month period, I'd believe it. If 102 people die/day from car accidents, that would mean that for every 3.5m people, 1 die each day. That means you'd have 60+ dead from car accidents out of the 7 million people in a one month period. I believe there could be correlation to the vaccine and the blood clots, but it also statistically doesn't really make sense.
“BUT THE PUBLIC WILL LOSE FAITH IN US IF WE DONT DO THIS!” Is the logic of someone who believes that 95% and not 50-60% actually believe what the CDC/FDA say on these vaccines and that the percentage is probably closer to 65-75% of the country that already don’t trust them amongst people that aren’t currently vaccinated.
Yeah, inherently this is the problem. I can sit here and say that this affirms the incredible level of precautions already taken by J&J and other manufacturers -- that they'd pause after such a low number of cases -- but the point will never resonate with the type of people it needs to. A significant portion of society is a lost cause.
What’s the chance of developing blood clots if you contract covid? what’s the chance if given the J&J vaccine? Oh, I see. FUCK
leadership at the fda and cdc should be forced to have an annual retreat to golden corral in like panama city beach or something just so they can have a refresher on how stupid the average american is
How long does something like this take to review before they un-pause? (they aren’t going to pull this for good) days, weeks?
I’m not opining on if the pause is the right decision from a risk perspective, but I don’t see how this comparison makes sense when the issue with the vaccine is a dangerous combination of blood clot related symptoms, not just any blood clot.
Iunno if i had to guess at something you can do proactively, isnt baby aspirin/bayer good for staving off clots? Ask a doctor about taking that for a month
Also- to add to the confusion - the pause only applies to federal programs other programs can choose to pause as well, but do not have to
Ron Desantis of all people trying to get out in front of this and calm people https://www.tampabay.com/news/healt...ffects-from-johnson-johnson-shots-in-florida/
I have been defensive on some of the criticism of the CDC but they have really fucked up the last few months messaging to the American People. They do not understand the audience they are speaking to and the reality on the ground.
Treatment for these clots is apparently different from other clots. https://abcnews.go.com/US/us-calls-halt-johnson-johnson-vaccination-blood-clot/story?id=77040882
100% this. I think you're fucked either way if more clots develop and FB disinformation goes into overdrive, but that's probably going to happen regardless. It's smart to be as safe as possible, but I think these people are completely out of touch with how stupid so many Americans are. There's a lot of dumb vaccine hesitancy, not necessarily an outright anti-vaxxer attitude, and you know this will more than a "all clear!" by the FDA to undo the damage. Maaaaybe you could just hammer home how the other two vaccines have been administered at a much higher rate than J&J without any pauses, but even then I'm skeptical people on the fence have enough critical thinking skills to differentiate between the three companies.
They’re probably trying to make sure that this isn’t causing DIC - disseminated intravascular coagulation. That’s the only condition I can think of off the top of my head besides HELLP in pregnant patients that causes clotting with low platelets. In any case, really dumb decision by the CDC
Isn’t it also possible that the 6 out of 6 million could also mean there are just a lot less not diagnosed yet? That plus the length it takes to develop the clots means that number could grow significantly over the next month.
I was just thinking this and wondering if the clots were pre-existing and coincided w/ vaccinations - but were due to some other medications or conditions
Was for some reason scheduled 33 days apart instead of 28 but just got my second shot. LFG. Interested to see how my side effects compare to my wife who just got her second shot this weekend.
could go either way. if this black metal guy has shot himself up with way worse things (sorry to stereotype for any black metal fans itt)...I can buy it.
Was supposed to get the J&J in an hour at a mass vacc site. They were able to shift to Moderna this morning without canceling any appointments today. Pretty impressive.
Can’t wait for our right wing small government folks to demand that the government step in and stop this private business from making decisions based on science and safety.
as much as I am sure people will come up with BS "religious reasons," this is a good move by the NFL. Others should follow
So its ok to increase risk for the players if someone has a "religious reason" to not get vaccinated?
