I use this forum to vent frustration with inconsistencies in public messaging. IRL, I'm the most compliant person I know. Running with your mask on is just silly. Do you sleep with it on too? Call my crazy, but I'd like to get back to the way things were in 2019 and before if that's okay with you. The CDC proving that a .008% chance of mild disease is proof the vaccines work and we should act accordingly.
masks outdoors (especially if you're vaccinated) are overkill if you're just walking around. i kinda get it if you're stopping to chat for someone for an extended period of time but if you're just doing your own thing, you're fine imo

As I said, in regards to risk evaluation. People seem to think they can't move forward from covid with even 0.0001% risk. That's not how life works.
It's possible that they were around people before you rolled up, and either they were unvaccinated or the mask wearers were unvaccinated. I can't tell you how many times I was driving in my car BY MYSELF and had a mask on simply because I forgot to take it off after going inside a store
Turn USA 2021 and onwards into Japan/SKorea 2019 regarding general populace health mitigation choices. No thanks on the overworking culture aspect, but otherwise, if half or so of the people in subways and crowded spaces wore simple surgical masks, we’d be a healthier society.

Is there any research on mask culture effectiveness in these countries pre-pandemic? I.e. are their flu numbers significantly lower than other countries? Genuinely curious and my lazy google search only retrieved articles related to covid-19.
I see no reason to wear a mask outdoors if you're vaccinated and only around other vaccinated people that you know (assuming you are all fully vaccinated out past the recommended time periods). But don't go walking around stores and indoors with other strangers maskless quite yet. Even if just to demonstrate good behavior. Let's give this a couple more months and we'll all be enjoying our summers a whole heck of a lot more than 2020. If you live somewhere where there is a lot of vaccine hesitancy, move. I don't know what else to tell you. P.S. kids under a certain age cannot yet be vaccinated. don't be an asshole.
Haven’t done outdoor mask since it was established that outdoor transmission is extremely rare as long it’s not a large crowd like midway through last year

I found one from statista that said 2019 (being Japan’s peak for the preceding decade) was 2.9 deaths per 100,000. Our worst was the 17/18 flu season which killed ~61,000, which is about 18.6 per 100k. Average flu season is closer to 35k deaths in US, so 10.69/100k. And we’re a much less dense society obviously.

If there's a requirement then of course, I'm talking about going outside for a jog, to a park that isn't super crowded, or walking through a parking lot and taking your mask off after you've been inside a store.
Is there any peer reviewed evidence showing that there's a good risk of catching COVID while being outdoors unmasked? I don't recall seeing anything very convincing, but I could definitely be wrong. At any rate if there is then it's likely incredibly small if you're fully vaccinated.

I will say that it was super nice last night to go to a brewery with a bunch of guys who are either all partially or fully vaccinated, outside, and be able to shoot the shit for a couple of hours. I haven't been able to do that, at least do so and feel comfortable, in over a year.
