I'm in Thailand and headed to Vietnam at the end of the month for four weeks and I am getting a barrage of panic from my parents
My colleague is traveling in Vietnam now with her husband and inlaws. I think they're mostly hanging around Hanoi. They actually flew through Wuhan on Jan 10 and Jan 19 I'll let you know if I hear anything from them re: Vietnam. I'm 90% certain I picked up my bug in the overnight I had in Saigon. Either there or the flights from Hong Kong to there or there to Singapore.
From the STEP email listserv: "Department of State is making arrangements to relocate its personnel stationed at the U.S. Consulate General in Wuhan to the United States. We anticipate that there will be limited capacity to transport private U.S. citizens on a reimbursable basis on a single flight leaving Wuhan Tianhe International Airport on January 28, 2020 and proceeding directly to San Francisco. Interested U.S. citizens in possession of valid passports should contact [email protected] with the information listed below. This capacity is extremely limited and if there is insufficient ability to transport everyone who expresses interest, priority will be given to individuals at greater risk from coronavirus."
They cleared non-essential personnel over a week ago. It's not a panic plan either If it was, they'd find a way to have more than one bird.
Starting to lockdown some cities in Guangdong shortly, at least inbound. Local governments trying to prevent further spread.
FYI, my colleague ended up staying in China since they didn't want to have to deal with freaking people out in Vietnam since they'd been in Wuhan.
I have lurked for years on this board for laughs so the fact I am involved in this is bizarre but i just mobilized 33 tons of liquid disinfectant to Wuhan and other areas for hospital disinfection because they are running low or like stated here, they use what amounts to 10% bleach solution. This was a “donation” to the government. We are working in parallel now on an enveloped virus in livestock in China where we simply know what the hell we are doing and we have been pulled into this.
SARS was not contagious during the incubation period. This means things like airport screenings are, although not completely useless, certainty not as effective. People are contagious even though they are not showing symptoms yet
If that wasn't already being assumed, I'm not sure why. Most respiratory and GI viruses are contagious during the incubation phase. Just less so because the vehicle's not there
Side note: I saw where symptoms of Wuhan are including vertigo, which could be the cause of the people "falling down" or "unable to stand" reports we've been seeing in some videos. I had vertigo during a couple of illnesses when I was a teenager and that was pretty much the worst shit I ever experienced. The first time I had it I was 100% certain I was dying either from a stroke or some kind of brain bleed. After a couple of hours of pure hell I could find a certain position to lay in that would make the spinning stop. But if I moved out of that position, it was pure hell again. I can remember my dad finding me laying in the hallway by the bathroom door. He was like "Shaolin5, what the hell are you doing?" Me:"Making the spinning stop". Dad:
Hong Kong is essentially business as usual by the way, in case you're tying this in with the protests there.
Deaths are going to start piling up quickly in China. Would be interested in seeing flu deaths in China year over year, but doubt anything published is accurate. Just a reminder, the Olympics are in 6 months in Tokyo. Will be interesting in seeing how this plays out in Asia over next few months
Sounds like they are extending the Spring Festival holiday an extra week. "With the approval of the state council, in order to strengthen the prevention and control of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus, effectively reduce the number of people gathered, prevent the spread of the epidemic, and better protect people's lives and health, the specific arrangements for the extension of the Spring Festival holiday in 2020 are hereby notified as follows: 1. The Spring Festival holiday of 2020 will be extended to February 2 (Sunday), and work will start on February 3 (Monday). 2. Colleges and universities, primary and secondary schools, and kindergartens in different places shall postpone the start of the semester, and the specific time shall be notified by the education department separately. 3. Employees who are unable to take a vacation due to the prevention and control of the epidemic disease shall, in accordance with the provisions of the labor law of the People's Republic of China, arrange for compensatory leave, and the wages during the holiday shall be guaranteed in accordance with the relevant policies."
Two potential cases in my neck of the woods here in Central Virginia. With the way things are going lately, fuck my life if they are confirmed.
I feel like people are in hysteria about this like its the literal red death from Edgar Allan Poe's poem. Yes, this thing does appear to be very infectious, yes it is very serious. However, you're not going to immediately die if you're exposed to someone with it, the gist of it is basically a very severe strain of a viral flu/cold.
No but when I get sick it’s normally bad. Like when I got the flu I was out of work for two weeks and had to be hospitalized
