I haven't read the story, but there's always these headlines of something like "high schooler develops test that can detect HIV at 10x specificity than current tests" and it's always something that other companies have already discovered and are working on. It's still impressive because these kids will likely be future scientists like yourself, but the media cannot help but frame it as something that literally no one else has discovered.

The local urgent care is out of rapid tests. They're now doing 2 day tests. Assuming my wife is also negative there is a shitstain of a respiratory infection going around our area. Just in time to take the local schools up to 4 full days a week from 2 days with half classes.

Our local Staples has an abundance of k95 masks. Check there. I frequently do the surgical mask / cloth mask / face shield combo. I get constantly stared at because in West Virginia, the virus is a HOAX, you see.

My nephews MIL tested positive today. Sucks because we have both been babysitting his 3 month old daughter. I haven't felt any symptoms and neither has he, but he's been in contact with her picking up his daughter. No one knows where she got it, but im willing to bet it was her 22 year old covid denying son who of course still lives at home. He had "a cold" last week but turns out it was covid.
Is there any new data/info about in person schooling? Virtual just isn’t working for us and we are thinking about sending our 5 yo back. He has asthma, allergies, etc which comes into play wrt that decision.
We sent ours back last week. The local schools just hadn't had significant outbreaks so we sent ours back
One of the worst parts of this plague, for me, is losing touch with friends from work. I also don't have social media for obvious reasons. Most everyone at my office started going back to the office a few months ago. A few of them are essentially COVID hoaxers, including one who's wife lost taste and smell and he continued going to the office, otherwise I'd be going back to work at least a few days/week. One of my co-workers' wife got diagnosed with breast cancer in January. She went to Houston for treatment and surgery and I hadn't heard anything in a few months so I assumed things were going good. Found out today she's been in the hospital for a month and is currently in surgery as a hail mary attempt at saving her life. I feel terrible for not checking with him earlier just to shoot the shit and ask how she's doing. They also have an 18 month old little girl. Fuck Cancer. Fuck Covid. Fuck Trump.

kind of where i'm at, once it became crystal clear as a country we wouldn't take this seriously i mostly just check my local numbers occasionally and the rare thing that pops up on twitter there's nothing new to learn right now for your regular civilians, just wear a mask, don't spend time indoors with others, and socially distance the best you can now that winter showed up it's even worse, can't do half as much outdoors
