If it was affecting other trials besides the Covid-19 vaccine, would it have something to do with how the drug is delivered (Note: I am out of my element)
It could have been a bad vial (not stored properly, contaminated, etc) but if it happened to a single person I have to assume the "injury" it caused was pretty severe.
That's a very expensive abundance of caution trigger to pull though, so I'd think the chances are its probably pretty bad news.
1. There are no tent cities in Memphis or my mother would do nothing but talk about it 2. To make up this story is so fucked up https://www.commercialappeal.com/st...-false/5746326002/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot
And potentially far more catastrophic if they didn't. In large multi-center RCTs, it's not uncommon to pause enrollment while you investigate unanticipated serious adverse effects until you can determine if they were treatment related or not. Doesn't mean the study's dead. This happens all the time. This is just the first RCT ever that has had casual spectators.
It's not just that. It's that anytime you round up tens of thousands of people and watch them closely for several months, you'll find that some of them have bad things happen to them during that period. Doesn't mean they're all due to the investigational treatment. But ethical oversight in clinical trials is STRICT so you better hit pause and check it out before continuing.
I honestly don't know anything about that. Can't say at this point. Just trying to show what's routine for multi-center RCTs and what's just stuff we're seeing cuz we're paying attention for the first time. I'm not saying there's no chance this turns out to be a dead-in-the-water study. Just that it's WAY to soon to think that based on this news alone
Yes. It’s fairly common-ish for kids literally pass out after HPV vaccines. Many childhood vaccines have 1/million chance at causing things like GBS which is a pretty crazy neurological side effect. Febrile seizures happen. Anaphylaxis happens. Severe stuff all rare (~1/million) but happens.
My assumption of Russian vaccine results would put people into 2 categories: Survived, or fell out of an open window.
#2: wtf? This country is primed to go off on anything. Hoping we develop better filtration to catch this shit before it goes viral.
Man distrust of vaccines already seems to be dangerously high. Rushing one through is risky for way more reason than just whether or not its safe. A bad vaccine could tip the scales for all vaccines entirely.
Agreed. Had a moron friend who posted some video claiming that all the talk about a second wave is because they know a second wave is coming because “they” are planning it. Something along the lines of a vaccine creating the second wave. Was a little hard to follow who they are, and it’s strange coming from Trumpers when he is pushing for a vaccine. In any event, her comment was “This is why I don’t trust vaccines!!1!”
Just got off a conference call and one of the coworkers on the line “wasn’t feeling well” and was having a hard time finishing sentences without having to cough and take a deep breath. We are currently working on a plan to get us back into the office on a staggered schedule and no mask policy has been mentioned, just some assumption that 50% capacity means we are ok. Can’t wait
If you guys work on projects together as the main part of your jobs, ask the question I did that kept all of our offices closed: “Why are we sending people into the offices (mainly via public transportation) to get on Zoom calls with those of us working from home? Alternating who is home and who is in the office still increases exposure, right?”
I've written letters to patients' employers (only when solicited) addressing unsafe work practices. Is that an overreach? Probably. I don't care. It's made a difference on a couple occasions. I'm tired of businesses going unchecked in their stupidity. So if it's not your job to raise your hand and object, whose is it? You have a right to be safe at your workplace to the degree possible. See if your doc would write a letter, if you want. This is a public health matter, not a company one
I'm having trouble parsing this, is this condition now known to be why the AstraZeneca trial was paused?
I’ve already raised my hand and told my manager I’m ok with being the office as needed but people need to wear masks when congregating
Any of you guys currently in the trials asked to upload a video of why you wanted to sign up for the trials?
Nope, not yet at least. I can see that for people who are typically underrepresented in trials like black people that they're desperately trying to get enrolled at a higher percentage.
The topic of healthcare workers’ Covid infections came up in the Covid sports thread, so I thought I would mention this information here. At one of the large local hospitals almost all of the healthcare workers who got infected at the hospital itself caught it from an employee who had caught it outside the hospital. A very high percentage of them were not following hospital procedures for masking or eye protection, and in many cases were doing stupid things like congregating in break rooms (which is prohibited).
Yeah seems to be the case p much everywhere. Opened things up in our clinic because people in our EDs just weren't getting sick.
Yep. We have literally 7x more employee to employee cases than nosocomial infections at our biggest hospital. also not sure I told the story here but apparently a group of our icu nurses had a house party, one nurse ends up being positive, now 12 other icu nurses on quarantine lul
Journal watch review Genetic contributor to racial differences? Transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2) — a gene that facilitates SARS-CoV-2 entry into the body — is expressed at higher levels in the nasal cavities of Black individuals than other racial/ethnic groups, according to a report in JAMA. Researchers measured TMPRSS2 gene expression in nasal epithelium samples taken from some 300 people in New York City between 2015 and 2018. They found that Black individuals had significantly higher TMPRSS2 gene expression than Asian, Latino, mixed-race, or white individuals. They conclude, "Higher nasal expression of TMPRSS2 may contribute to the higher burden of COVID-19 among Black individuals," although "many additional factors are likely."
Expected tweet from POTUS tomorrow: “Based on new scientific information, and it’s the best news, we are immediately stopping all covid vaccine development. This is good for America. I promise you.”
Well the study is wrong because the only reason black people contract and die more from COVID is because of vitamin D deficiency
