(actually they haven't specifically told us who they consider "frontline acute care providers" but I'm hoping our clinic being open to covid patients and them forcing me to do a bunch of covid UC means that's me)

We do not need mass vaccinations for life to be back to normal unless you are an insane person who has twisted this to saving all lives. It's the 80/20 principle. We vaccinate those at risk first that takes the sting out of hospitalisations which is issue no.1.

And the logistics firms are a bit ahead of you on this, all of these things are being rolled out.

Thanks for your relentless negativity and self loathing though.

Yeah we’re getting “5k-20K” doses by “early to mid December”. But first line are LTC, ICU, cancer teams, and ED. Hospital and clinic staff in wave 2, which dose depending, could be December but before Jan 15.

Sorry to hear, man. Hope you have an easy go of it.

    This is the order the UK Department of Health have set out;

    1. older adults’ resident in a care home and care home workers1
    2. all those 80 years of age and over and health and social care workers1
    3. all those 75 years of age and over
    4. all those 70 years of age and over
    5. all those 65 years of age and over
    6. high-risk adults under 65 years of age
    7. moderate-risk adults under 65 years of age
    8. all those 60 years of age and over
    9. all those 55 years of age and over
    10. all those 50 years of age and over
    11. rest of the population (priority to be determined)
Once we get to people no. 6, that is the sting well and truly taken out of this. Arguably group 1 that won't help hospitalisations much given that the very frail often don't reach the hospital, but it will help hospital logistics over the second half of the respiratory seasons in the northern hemisphere.

This is going to vary by population size, demographics and underlying health issues (i.e. severe obesity of BMI greater than 40 in many countries).

A quick back of the envelope calculation here shows we have c. 14% over 65 where I am. With healthcare workers and care givers in nursing homes, say 17%. I imagine we have at least another 8% in that "at risk category" (my dad had cardiomyopathy and is in heart failure but is just 62 so would be in that category). So 25% to take the sting out fully?

Pfizer have only 50m doses at the end of 2020 which is only 25m people globally which isn't a lot- end of January to vaccinate group 1 is optimistic. 1.3bn does for 2021 though so with front loading of that there is no reason why you can't have 150m (that's the original 25m plus 125m) of the most vulnerable vaccinated globally by April. AZ sounds far easier logistically and is on track too. Optimistic for 250m globally by April maybe but who knows? If we aren't looking at mandatory shots and people who have antibodies choose not to get it immediately, we could be further along the road. The third world dimension is obviously important too...

I believe the phrase hospitalization was used, does that mean they got so sick they got admitted or just that they are symptomatic and tested positive?

So this may be getting a little ahead of the game some, but for those who have had Covid, should they (me) plan on getting the vaccine at some point once it opens up to any demographic who wants it?

I'd think so, yes, if it's been over 3 months. There's some evidence of re-infection now so it's clear your immunity isn't going to last for a year or more.

From my basic understanding this seems like a better way to identify if someone has been infected. I am just curious to see if the costs aren’t prohibitive from wide scale testing.

Does it even matter if you've been positive before? If it only lasts a few months, it's not really that important to know.

Have the reinfections been similar severity or less?

as a person with zero knowledge on the subject, I’d expect less severe.

Eh, I think it’s still pretty important. Jury is still out on how long it actually lasts and how prevalent reinfection is and how severe

This is probably a dumb question, but has there been any evidence of cases where someone was infected with COVID, but their immune system was able to fight it off early on?

As in, get infected today, but you’re in the clear like 3 days later rather than 2 weeks. Again, maybe this isn’t even possible, so sorry in advance. Just something I thought of recently.

I would say there are a lot of cases of that, what’s not 100% clear is if you’re still contagious or not as asymptomatic spread still seems to be a thing.

So my wife and in-laws are all going to a beach house we rented for thanksgiving. There’s nothing I can do that would stop her and my son from going outside of having her arrested. It’s happening regardless of what I say or do. So it’ll just be my FIL, MIL, BIL and SIL there. They’re all being cautious but my MIL is a teacher. Everyone is getting tested before coming down but I’m still not good with it. I’m staying home and taking care of our dog post surgery.

I think the jury is still out. Thought on secondary infection being worse that I’ve read is that your lungs/body were still weak from first infection even months later and therefore coped even worse

She’s going. Hell, my SIL is here now visiting. My wife has extreme post pardum and our apartment is basically a hotel now with her family flying in and rotating out. She doesn’t care anymore about covid as she put she is “over it”. Which puts my biggest concern on our 5 month old son.

That sucks but she not really allowed to be "over it" until it's "over." Pretty shit tier that she, and all of your in-laws, are willing to put your kid at risk. I'd be furious i'd I were in your position. Sorry man.

Masks help but not that dramatically. Belgium began stricter “shut down” measures regarding indoor events and gatherings throughout October if you look at their full timeline. The Loosening of the mask mandate was only for Brussels and not the whole country, but their surge aligned with schools opening and indoor events happening, which they then corrected.

Masks are only a very small tool in how to manage a way out of the pandemic. It’s only controversial here in the US because of GOP talk radio, but while the data is clear it helps, it is not a cure all and graphs/posts like this are disingenuous.

Belgium is a great example of how a country can get its shit together in a hurry though, when they all work together and understand the data.

My kids are still doing school from home but their school is rolling out testing... anyone else schools doing this? Parents have to sign a consent form allowing the school nurse to give the test:

"BinaxNOW Rapid Antigen Tests available to administer to students enrolled in in-person (Brick & Mortar) instruction for the first semester, who show potential symptoms of COVID-19."
