Are the strong side effects from the vaccines due to mRNA, or more to the fact that it’s novel?

does JJ show similar side effects?

It's the protein that the mRNA codes for, your body already naturally will eliminate foreign RNA it sees (e.g. a virus trying to infect you) so a ton of the work in this technology went into getting these pieces of mRNA to properly be stable inside a lipid bubble that can properly fuse with your cells iirc. I haven't looked it up, but I bet for J&J the few trial patients who did get two shots probably had a more intense reaction on the second if it was within a month.

I'm sure pperc could correct me if I'm wrong here, but my guess is that mRNA vaccines could give a stronger second reaction because they wind up expressing a lot more spike protein overall (thus driving a stronger immune response, especially on the second shot) than what you may get in a J&J vaccine.

It's not entirely clear. Being novel a priori doesn't mean bad. Some may be due to the lipid nanoparticle as well.

Do I believe the report that they think there will be enough vaccines for all adults by end of May?

I'm predicting earlier than that, late April or early May for all adults that want one.

Clinic down the street from work might have extra vaccines at the end of the day. I had covid about 4 weeks ago. If I am offered one, is there any reason not to get it?

Potentially a strong immune reaction with such a recent infection. Ideally you’d wait another 8 weeks. And then getting 1 dose may be sufficient, but for now plan on 2.

Now Biden saying enough vaccinations for every American by the end of May. Unequivocally great news.

Same question as before regarding kids and vaccines. What are we doing with 300 million full vaccination doses when we don’t have that many adults and children will need different vaccines?

Maybe some get thrown away like what has been happening:idk:. The J&J are only 1 dose vaccines, so that could change the calculus, but who knows.

Man this second shot is kinda wrecking me. I felt fine yesterday all day, but I woke up in the middle of the night last night with chills, body aches, and extreme fatigue.

It sucks, but at least I know it's doing its job. I'm sure I'll feel a ton better tomorrow.

A lot of speculation that it may be closer to one month rather than two with how many people may opt-out and manufacturing increases. You can also look into volunteering at a site for a day where you'd get vaccinated at the end of the day.

It will depend on the area. I know in Louisville if you volunteer, you have to volunteer for 40 hours before you are eligible for the vaccine.

It is some places. My roommate gave a few shots as a volunteer nurse and got hers. They were prioritizing medical volunteers over non-medical volunteers but I'm sure every place is different. Definitely worth a look.

Getting my first shot tomorrow. Neither of my parents had any reactions but every person is different.

Are there any medications you should/shouldn’t take if you’re feeling like crap from it? I’ve seen people mention Benadryl is okay if you have a fever.

Afterward you are probably fine, but in general my advice is don’t be a pussy and just deal with post-vaccine symptoms without meds.

alcohol, weed and meth absolutely fine though.

are there any restrictions on giving blood around the shots? First shot is 3/5 then 3/26 or 4/2 depending on what I get. Blood drive is 3/17. Should I just pass?
