AMEX cardholders: looks like Amex made a mistake and made a second Uber credit for December. I just ordered breakfast before they could claw it back.
I saw it on the Reddit Amex forum. Looks like a bunch of people had it quickly revoked. I ordered ubereats breakfast before they could it back it out the account. It was a duplicate credit of the $35 we got on 12/1.
80k is a really great signup bonus. 40k kinda sucks, so better options may come up down the road, but it may not be worth waiting. It's all about how quickly you need to get to 125k, and how you can reasonably accomplish that. 80k+40k+the required spend gets you there. If you're deciding between different 40k options, you just have to weigh how much you want to pay, in the form of higher annual fee, for the extra points and other benefits. It's usually a good deal to pay more in year 1, but then the subsequent years you see diminishing returns. You can always downgrade to cheaper SW cards after 12 months (and after you get the higher annual bonus) You don't have to apply for both the same day, but you can if you want. You will have to be under 5/24 to apply, and I believe it's usually best to apply for the business one first, especially if you're 4/24 (because the biz app won't show up on your personal credit pull)
Yeah but then it said on the confirmation my amex. Can't get a receipt until it's delivered so I'm not positive yet. Oh well.
Speaking of... I haven't yet paid the new gross AF for the plat but I'm starting to feel less bothered by it. You do have to spend a little more on stuff (external to the fee I mean) than you might otherwise, but the return in terms of quality of product can be pretty nice, nice enough to the point that you're still getting a deal imo. In the past 2ish months I've used - the thc/fhr credit (with property allowance and upgrade) - the airline credit - $50 staypineapple credit (w/ upgrade) - $50 Hilton credit (and upgrade due to auto-gold that I wouldn't have otherwise) - centurion, and other lounges in the "collection" (Virgin Atl) and PP (Air France) - Uber credits (thanks to eats.) - the saks credit Depending on the 'demic I'll likely end up using an additional $50 sonesta credit soon as well. Not that bad.
Update: Amex just revoked the remaining 36 cents. Looks like they won’t take back my breakfast takeout and I won this round.
I need to get a card for our (real) business. We average around 80k/a year on debit transactions. Most of our spending is in areas that aren’t covered by categories (psych testing materials). I’m kind of weary about hitting the 15k on an ink preferred too since our spending is variable. Recommendations?
The other chase ink cards are great options. Chase Ink Unlimited has a good signup bonus (75k pts), no annual fee and 1.5x on all spending, so you don't have to worry about fitting your spending into certain categories. Required spending for the bonus is $7500 over 3 months, so your average monthly spend should definitely get you there. Here's my referral, if you go that route. https://www.referyourchasecard.com/21a/8DVFQ41LYY
I think I won the Amex Uber glitch. Ordered some stuff from Costco yesterday off Uber Eats to take advantage of the $50 off a purchase of $95 or more offer and apply my $35 credit, and instead it was $70 so I got $125 off my Costco order
Amex Plat holders should also be on the lookout for 50% off on Amazon when redeeming at least one membership reward point. I’ve gotten this deal in the past, but the special I redeemed on 12/23 was by far the best iteration. It was 50% off up to $80. Ended up getting airpod pros for ~$100.
Once I have the spend and points etc and companion pass is granted, how does that work? Will it automatically update the companion when I’m booking the second person’s flight or does it show up as a credit on my credit card?
You have to designate your companion on your SW account. And you can change this person up to 3 times per year, or keep it as the same person the entire time. When you book a flight on SW, you are given the option any time after to add a companion. If you do, it automatically adds whoever you've designated to the flight. It's also important to note that there must be a seat available on the flight. Hypothetically, if you buy the last ticket on the plane, you cannot use your companion pass (in reality, this rarely happens. I'm going on like year 7 or 8 with the companion pass, and this has never happened to me). No matter how you paid for your flight (points, cash, other) it costs $5.60 each way for your companion to fly on domestic flights, to cover taxes (which you cannot pay for with points). If it's an international flight, your companion flight has to pay whatever taxes are associated with flying into/out of that particular country.
awesome. Thanks for the info. Never had any sort of companion pass before. We don’t travel a ton bc lack of child care but we are definitely going to Vegas in June (work trip) and would like to take a family vacation at some point this year. Maybe two, depending on where we go and cost. We have about $4k in chase points saved up too, so that will help. can you get referrals on the personal or business card? If so, drop your link and my wife will apply next week.
Hello fellow kids... I'm looking at getting into this whole credit card travel game, but 276 pages is a LOT to catch up on. The interwebs tell me that the Chase Sapphire Preferred had an elevated bonus for a while last year. Is that a seasonal thing that comes around every so often or is it a 1 time deal? I'm in no rush, so I'll wait around for it to come back around if that is a thing.
I don't have a referral, but hopefully someone else can offer one. Also, should have clarified if you didn't already know, that all the credit card apps need to be associated with the same SW Rapid Rewards account. Don't split the 2 between you and your wife, and don't forget to add the same RR account # to all credit apps, if you do multiple. Don't leave it blank and let it auto generate RR account #s.
Definitely not a one time deal. Chase usually has an increased offer on its Sapphire cards at least one a year. Sometimes it's for the Sapphire Reserved (high end card) and sometimes for the Sapphire Preferred (mid tier card). I'd recommend jumping in right away, even if it's not for a Chase Sapphire card. But choosing the right card depends on what you want to accomplish. Sounds like you prefer travel rewards over cash back, which is a positive in that you can often squeeze more value out of points when redeemed for travel compared cash back. There are generic travel rewards like Chase UR points, AMEX MR points, Citi ThankYou, Capital One, etc. And then there are credit cards co-branded specific airline alliance (United, AA, Southwest, etc) and hotel chain (Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, Hilton, etc) . So even if you don't go directly with the Chase Sapphire, there is still a ton of free shit you can starting earning. You just gotta figure out what rewards align with your travel habits.
If you're a person who likes (or is willing) to fly Southwest, now is the perfect time to earn the Southwest Companion pass. It's not exactly an easy entry into the world of churning (although it happened to be mine almost a decade ago), but there is no better value out there.
I've had a Hilton baseline Amex for years that I only use when I stay at their brand. Been digging into the whole concept and now looking at working my way up through the next 2 levels of card to pickup the intro bonuses and Diamond status with them. Had the wife get a CSP at the end of last year. So I'll pick one up next year when they offer the bigger bonus. Good lookin out, thanks.
Patiently waiting to re-churn RR cards. They added the threshold if you’ve received a bonus in the last 24 months you can’t apply. Will be applying mid-January
Thanks for the clarification. I was planning on starting with my wife because I’m pretty sure she is only 1/24, 2/24 at worst. I think I’m closer to 5/24 currently, but I really can’t remember off the top of my head. I guess I need to go through my accounts and find when first statement was. Would probably be smart of me to document that in the notes folder so I can easily reference account opening dates.
Yes it's a good idea to keep a personal running tab of credit card approvals for easy reference, so you don't make a mistake or paint yourself in a corner. I believe the different cc companies are doing a better job of not allowing you to apply (or won't approve you) if you do not qualify for the signup bonus, which is nice considering all the other ways they can screw you. Also a good idea to sign up for sites like creditkarma and credits same (since they will do all the tracking for you, in addition to other benefits), and to pull your actual credit report periodically as an authentic check and opportunity to correct any mistakes or catch small problems before they turn into big problems . I think with covid, they are still doing multiple free reports per year for each credit reporting bureau, but normally you can still do one a year, for all 3 bureaus.
On the chase southwest site says “These products are available to you if you do not have a current Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card and have not received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Business Card and Employee Credit Card products.” - do they mean a chase southwest card member bonus or any chase bonus in past 24 months? I ask because she got a chase Hyatt card less than 2 years ago.
They mean a signup bonus for any SW personal card in the last 24 months will disqualify you. SW biz and other chase cards are fine.
2021 L: I had $400 in hotel credits ($200 x 2 Amex platinum credits to Fine Hotel & Resort or the Hotel Collection) and couldn't find a reasonable option to make a booking. All of the nightly rates were north of $350 in DFW, so this benefit will go unused.
if we didn't have a wedding in SF it'd probably have gone unused by us too, really think i'll cancel mine this year but want to see if there's any big changes coming for '22
Just curious - where'd you use it in SF? I noticed the other day that the spot I triggered it at (the clift) seems to no longer be in the collection.
we ended up using it at the Fairmont, was still expensive but $200/credit on 2 separate nights, food + beverage credit, free breakfast, etc made it equivalent to staying somewhere cheaper
also fairmont was very broad on the credits, they ended up giving us almost $100 extra total by just waiving away overages
I would caution not to use it today. I ordered food last NYE around 9pm and because the charge didn’t post until the next day Chase wouldn’t honor the credit. I sent screenshots of the door dash order on 12/31 and they just kept responding since the charge came through 1/1 I was out of luck. I’ve kept the card since I thought work travel would pick up but since it didn’t I’m now reminded via this story to cancel this shit and get the preferred.
I use 10xtravel.com. Their Facebook group is a really good resource for questions and to see what redemptions others are making.
Some breakdown this Cardmatch thing for me. Is this supposed to be a comprehensive list of which cards someone would get approved for? Or a list of cards that have special sign up bonuses? Any downside to using it?
I cancelled my normal Amex Platinum in November when the annual fee hit and got a Schwab Platinum for the 100,000 point signup bonus in December. For some reason I'm still getting the Uber credit each month from my cancelled Platinum in addition to the credit from the Schwab Platinum. So last month I got $70 at the start of the month. This month I got $30. Not sure how long that'll last but nice little glitch in their system.
Dan's Deals covers a lot more than just travel stuff, but I think he does an excellent job covering credit card offers and how to best utilize points for different hotels/airlines/generic point systems. Frequent Miler, Onemileatatime, Dealswelike, Million Mile Secrets are skme more I follow, but there ends up being a lot of redundancy in what you get out of each additional follow The Flyertalk message board is also a great travel resource. Pretty much any question I've ever had, I can find a previous discussion about the matter on their massive message board system
Anybody know of any boosted options for using points for purchases at Target currently? My wife is redecorating and going hard. We arent using points for travel any time soon so if I could get a good redemption rate I'd bite, but not going to waste UR or MR for under going rate
