It's wild. IIRC, you hear screams as people start to die, but continue to hear Jim Jones over a loudspeaker the whole time.
I think their format humanizes these monsters more than most other documentaries/podcasts about serial killers. Those mediums usually attempt to scare you so much that you come away not thinking about them as real people. Making fun of those pieces of shit really makes you understand their personality traits and motivations.
Last Podcast on the Left did an entire thing on Jonestown. I am not a fan of the podcast, or the guys doing the podcast (they waste too much time telling unfunny jokes), but I actually did enjoy their full series on Jonestown. Once you get past the dumb jokes, and them trying too hard to be funny, it's a fascinating listen.
LPOTL has an episode from probably a year ago were they just play the Jonestown suicide tape. No commentary, they just play it. It's surreal and really disturbing to sit through.
If you're into a lot of these things you'd like the Astonishing Legends podcast. I like them better than LPOTL. Like someone just said the material is great but they go off tangents like they're at open mic night .
Used to listen to those as well. My favorite is Timesuck. Until recently, he was somewhere in the middle of Dan Carlin and LPOTL, but he's been veering closer to LPOTL in the last few eps unfortunately. Anyway, he has some overlap with Astonishing Legends (Dylatov Pass, Oak Island etc), and his podcast is great (or was prior to the last month anyway ).
Yeah, he's got good material too but tries to be too clever with how he uses/interjects the word suck all the time and just gets annoying.
Just tried to listen to a couple lpotl. Good lord they are terrible. I can not believe people can listen to a whole podcast of them trying to be funny and laughing at eachother.
Yea there’s a little too much going on. Difficult to follow. Seem like guys I’d enjoy getting stoned with and shooting the shit over some beers, but not what I want in a podcast.
After getting back to my personal phone I listened to part 1 of Jonestown and was not that annoyed. Really enjoyed it and will continue to listen
They start goofing around and laughing and I lose focus and drift off. Next thing I know, its 5-10 minutes later and Ive missed the informative parts.
lpotl is certainly an acquired taste, they do get way to into their own shit sometimes. I love it though, maybe I'm 15.
If you want to do a less annoying review of the Jonestown Massacre listen to Casefiles podcast. Its case #60 and is a 3 parter.
It's literally an hour of them trying to one up each other with the worst one liners that always come up at the most inopportune times and completely derail the conversation
Not an article, but I just saw a couple days ago that Amazon Video has the entire Unsolved Mysteries series with Robert Stack available for streaming. I just binged the entire first season in a couple days. I remember watching reruns on Lifetime (lmbo) during the summer as a kid.
I was always scared to ride a motorcycle after one where a guy riding his motorcycle was killed in a road rage incident by a person driving a semi.
I always remember the one where the family was living in a school bus and the dad gambled it away. They split the kids up and put into adoption I think two of the siblings were never seen again
I was in Florida on vacation and my parents went out so I was staying with some family friends (I now know they were high as shit) They turned off the lights and put on Unsolved Mysteries. It was some episode about demons and it completely fucked me up. They had to call the restaurant my folks were at and figure out how to chill me out. I was like 6. I credit that for my love of dark stuff now. So happy it's on Prime.
The alien/UFO episodes always freaked me out, especially after watching Fire in the Sky. That movie really fucked me up as a kid.
To this day I cite this as the scariest movie I've ever seen. Saw it as a young kid and as a result the better part of my life's worst nightmares involved aliens.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Fish I had never heard of this guy until today. A few highlights: After ten days, Fish took Kedden to "an old farm house", where he began to torture him. The torture took place over two weeks. Fish eventually tied Kedden up and cut off half of his penis. "I shall never forget his scream, or the look he gave me," Fish later recalled. He originally intended to kill Kedden, cut up his body, and take it home, but he feared the hot weather would draw attention to him; instead, Fish poured peroxide over the wound, wrapped it in a Vaseline-covered handkerchief, left a $10 bill, kissed Kedden goodbye, and left. It was about this time that Fish began to indulge in self-harm. He would embed needles into his groin and abdomen.[10] After his arrest, X-rays revealed that Fish had at least 29 needles lodged in his pelvic region.[10] He also hit himself repeatedly with a nail-studded paddle and inserted wool doused with lighter fluid into his anus and set it alight.[17] While he was never thought to have physically attacked or abused his children, he did encourage them and their friends to paddle his buttocks with the same nail-studded paddle he used to abuse himself. He soon developed a growing obsession with cannibalism, often preparing himself a dinner consisting solely of raw meat and sometimes serving it to his children.
