Just finished the prologue of Of Mice and Men and I’m reconsidering starting with this. Should I do IDB, OMaM, and then Grapes?
You’re gonna love grapes. Every other chapter is a scene-setting chapter; they alternate with the plot following the characters. They aren’t boring though; you want to read them just as much. I also love east of Eden. Despite its length, not hard to read at all. Shocking events happen like once a page; it’s wild.
Kind of fun fact: one of my wife's closest friends wrote a book recently. When she sent it in to whoever they send those in to, she had agents lining up to represent her, so she'll almost certainly get a publishing deal. Right now her chosen agent and her are having a back and forth about changing little things about it before sending it to the publishers. The book is told from a bunch of different perspectives and they asked her to change what my wife said was her best perspective, so I guess we will see how that goes. Thought this was very cool, so I thought I'd share.
Dystopian Sci-fi, that is gearing up to be a romance series To be fully candid - it was just ok. Granted im not the target demo for it. but if youre into that sort of thing, it's not bad. Especially for a first novel.
I don’t know if it’s possible for books like that to be “good” I have 7 chapters of a book rn and I tried to listen to some of the stuff that are selling to the masses and holy shit the prose is like 5th grade level it’s absurd
I think dystopian as well? I know it kind of centers around a video game. I think it tells the story of the person who created it. As I'm typing that, it sounds like RPO, but I don't think it's anything like RPO. My wife is currently on an annual hiking/national parks trip she's done with said friend every year since before I knew her. Her service is spotty atm, but I asked her about the genre.
Good / enjoyable. Whatever. Some books are suppose to be trash and just easy reads/guilty pleasures. Im going through a few of them in a row right now. Just fun reads that arent going to be mistaken for Tolstoy
Speaking of easy reads, My wife and I and another couple are all riding down to the beach and back together this week and are looking for an audiobook to knock out. Current options are How to Sell a Haunted House - Grady Hendrix The Only One Left - Riley Sager The Guest List - Lucy Foley The Silent Patient - Alex Michaelides Any thoughts? Any other books, obviously looking for page turning murder mystery/thriller/horror
Havnent read any of those. Only book by those authors ive read was Cabin at the end of the Woods by Sager The Chain or The Island by Adrain McKinty are my go-to suggestions for thriller/horror
which one is better, going to throw in one more suggestion to make it 5 and then make everyone pick (everyone but me will say "oh we don't care, anything is fine with us" etc. etc.)
Hard to say. I'll go w The Island. Definitely more creepier if thats your bag. The Chain has to do w kidnapped children if that's a turn-off for some parents in the group. But still really good
I tried to get through one chapter of a Colleen Hoover book and was contemplating jumping off a bridge
As long as we're in the circle of trust and the no shame zone - I read the first 10-15 chapters of Fourth Wing before wanting to throw the kindle out the window
Where should I even begin Spoiler full disclosure CB just learned who CH was yesterday so this was a timely discussion
Currently reading East of Eden. One of the many classics that I was probably supposed to read in school but didn’t. Only about halfway through but my god this is outstanding
Just finished Blood Meridian after three attempts. Audible was the only way for me to get through it. Fantastic but still confusing with respect to the Judge. Only thing I can suggest is he is the devil incarnation. Or the Judge symbolizes the devil and the kid is us as humans. The judge is trying to manipulate or make the kid conform to his beliefs but can’t so he kills him. Anyways, looking for a suggestion for something to add to my audible collection. Please and thank you
Just finished the sword of Kaigen and thought it was solid. For it being a stand alone book. Wang sure left the door wide open for sequels/different perspectives think I’m gonna start the sun eater series next and finish it before stormlight book five drops
Sorry man, I like it all. As long as it’s a good read. Thinking of starting Red rising series but can be talked out of it
I dont think anyone here will talk you out of that. It's great. The first book is a little YA and tropey. Youre taste for that my vary, but it sets up the rest of the series which is phenomenal. Go read it!
I started Michael Lew's Going Infinite last night which is about Sam Bankman-Fried. Good so far but Apple Books charged $25.99 for it which is crazy. I read Apple paid Lewis $5 million to write the book so now they are trying to recoup their money.
Dont want to poison the well, but that book turned me off to Michael Lewis and has me reconsidering all his work.
Halfway through Eye of the World, the first book of the Wheel of Time series, and I regret this. I've never quit a book, but I'm tempted.
Also read Of Mice and Men yesterday, not sure I need any more Steinbeck right now. Started Talented Mr. Ripley on a whim, then probably going to East of Eden.
The payoff is supposedly there in WoT series; I'll let one of the fantasy experts speak more to it though
I’m 43, I only have another 40yrs in this life. Just not convinced there’s time to make it through this series.
Short hiatus from the Red Rising series. Suggestion(s) on what to start in the meantime? Have the following books/series all downloaded and ready to go: Abercrombie - First Law trilogy Iain Banks - Culture series (have read Use of Weapons, I happily suggest it to others) Erikson - Malazan Book of the Fallen series Islington - Will of the Many Ruocchio - Sun Eater series Ryan - Blood Song series Sanderson - Mistborn series Stover - Caine series I'm leaning towards starting Sanderson's Mistborn series, but am open to other suggestions
Malazan Book of the Fallen is the best series I’ve ever read but it’s a lot to bite off. 10 book main series and multiple side series. Mistborn is a gateway drug into his greater Cosmere and its awesome.
I’ve only read Mistborn and Will of the Many out of those. I’d say Mistborn. Just because it’s different. Will of the many is similar vibes to RR. Save that for when you’re done w RR imo. Its awesome tho
Much like the The last few seasons of Game of Thrones, The show was so bad that it turned me off the source material. maybe at some point, I’ll go back and read again, but I don’t see it in the near future.
He was starting to read the books and wondering if he should continue halfway through book 1. I figured you would be the best to give the book series pitch.
Will if many is amazing but maybe wait until. Book two in 2025 comes out. I’ve changed my mind and started blood song series. But can’t go wrong with Sanderson.
