80% of the way done. Read a couple others in between parts. One of the better books I’ve ever read

Wife says it's a good book, but says her favorite book ever, regardless of where the author is from, is The Brothers Karamazov. I tried listening to it once, but there were a lot of characters, so I kind of gave up. I'll give it another try someday.

Brothers karamazov is a masterpiece. I’m not an audiobook guy, but it seems to me that it’s one you have to pick up and read.

Russian literature can be pretty confusing with the patronymic names and stuff. Would recommend reading fathers and sons by Turgenev before trying the longer stuff

Do you have like a naming convention? I feel like I would be well served by having an ebook version and find and replacing names with some standard names. Anotoliyarko Burushnikovickyapudolskianna is just too much

Id say ~90% of the time I read a classic, I come away thinking - yep its a classic for a reason

Nah tbh most of the names aren’t that hard

it’s just confusing because sometimes characters will be called different names because of the patronymic stuff

If you haven’t read much Russian lit and want to try a shorter one to see if it’s for you I really can’t recommend fathers and sons more

went to dinner with wife last night and went to barnes and noble after because she indulges my reading addiction. saw a bunch of nyrb classics on their shelves and bought a few. one of them was stoner by john williams. i'm about halfway through it, and it's one the best things i've ever read.

You prob know this, but writing Amazon reviews is one of the best things you can do for an author. They aren't visible or something until they get reviewed a certain amount of times. I saw a post where some indie author was begging people to review him

It's been a long time and I cant remember which podcast it was. But theres a Goodreads user that has gone viral for their reviews. Kind of like that dude on tiktok that reviews restaurants.

It's a big deal for him to review books. To make a long story short - he said he hates how the GR algorithms work. So he gives every book a 5 star rating but will write out the actual review of the book. Feels like its the only ethical way to review the book on that platform that doesnt negatively impact the authors

    Always found that interesting

Rip John Geirach. Has written a bunch of fly fishing related books.

If you want a great novel that is a good thriller and also beautifully pays homage to fly fishing*** The Guide by Peter Heller

*** at least it seemed that way to me, a guy who has never even seen a fly reel in person.

It’s kind of a sequel to The River. Not strictly necessary but probably read it first. I’m not a nature guy but it evoked a lot of that primal survivalist stuff and I resonated enough to read both.

Same. I'd the furthest thing from an outdoorsman. But the way he describes nature is beautiful and pulls me in. He is an auto-read for me.

The Vince Flynn/Mitch Rapp books are pretty good page turners

It goes downhill after Vince Flynn dies but they’re not unreadable. Probably my favorite of those types of books

Update on my wife's friend who wrote a book. She picked an agent. Hooray. They now have an American, English, and German publisher lined up ready to publish her book. Another fun fact, she used the name my wife gave her, but I'm not allowed to post it. I'll provide more details as they get further into the process, but I'd definitely heard of the American publisher.

What happened with hers btw? Bad/good?

Mistborn is really good. I think I prefer The First Law Trilogy ever so slightly, but both are top tier imo.

The experience w the publisher was really good, but this crazy shit happened w another author the publisher signed. Some kind of psycho the tried to claim she was plagiarizing and review bombed the book. They had to take legal action ect. I didnt get all the details, but it sounded awful.
