I'm on both. Vue is awesome, just slap the app on anything that will take it and log in. Works great channel selection is more than adequate IMO. Only downsides I have seen so far is that I am a solid 60 seconds (probably more) behind my friends cable when using FireTV. When I log in using my iPad I am only about 30 seconds behind. Other than that the interface is slightly clunky. I think it looks good, but it's missing some bells and whistles on different applications and it's a consistent UI. Example, they all look the same, but some interfaces work differently on different devices. PS3 and PS4 operate similarly. Only note, you can only have one PS4 logged into Vue at a time. I have two in the house but FireTV on my main TV so it's not that big of a deal. PS devices also offer a PIP and you can stream two shows/games at once and it's a feature I like, but as far as I can tell it's only available on PS devices. Just note that you may want to get another device if you planned on rolling with two PS4s. FireTV/Sticks operate similarly as well as it relates to the interface. Controller is strange to say the least. Some people might not like it, some won't care at all and I'm just a little weird because I'm in IT and I focus on that shit. Can't help it. Does not have PIP (If it does I can't find it), definitely significantly behind cable feeds. If you're in a group chat or texting with friends this is annoying. Certainly fixable, but we now have "calibration" where my friends pause their Live TV for a minute so we are all on the same page. Apple App. No complaints at all. Very clutch for wife shows or another game. Antenna required some tweaking. Had it basically where my satellite was and it picked up NBC but no Fox, CBS or ABC. Had to move it to the top of my house to get it to pick up those three channels. I bought this Clearstream Outdoor HD Antenaa. Was a pain in the ass but really I never need to touch it again. Kind of lucky really as my neighbor is an electrician which helped with multiple length coax and running the cable, etc....... Over the air antenna is actually quicker than the feeds over cable in terms of game time by about 15 seconds or so. I don't have that running through a third party appliance so I can't pause live TV obviously. But if you wanted to, that's certainly possible and maybe something I will explore later.
Awesome, thanks for the detailed write up. I'm in an apartment so I'd have to find a good indoor antenna but should be able to set it up in my second story window so hopefully that'll be a good enough location
Cool, you should be in better shape with that option if you are in a relatively flat location with decent line of sight. I'm in the hills of PA and I would guess that had something to do with my troubles on the antenna front.
Northeast Oklahoma, there's basically nothing between my city and the nearest major market except for farms so I'm hoping that helps
A good rabbit ear/ota antenna will normally pick up all local networks unless 1 you are an extreme distance from towers 2 have interference 3 poor line of sight I have a $50 antenna that works perfectly for me in central Austin, and picks up faint signals from San Antonio
I've been using Directv Now for two months. It gives me basically everything I want outside of the NFL games on NBC. I watch the Fox and CBS games through their apps. I signed up for the CBS one which I will cancel at the end of the season. DTV Now will eventually get them all but for now, it's imperfect. I can and have considered getting an antenna for my tv. Outside of sports, I've been binge-watching the Science Channel. I almost never turn off that channel nowadays.
mine gets interference with my PS4. I just want to buy a baller antenna. Not sure why they are often of poor quality.
A friend is working on YouTube TV and told me it would be in 85-90% of homes by the end of the year. Starting this week, the app will be available on TVs, and it should be on Xbox, Apple TV, and Roku in the next few weeks.
Yeah my only benefit for keeping it is I get the option to watch the CBS game on my computer while my tv streams the Fox game or one of the Sunday Ticket games (I have the streaming version of that too.)
tell your friend that it is awesome. it is so much more reliable for sports than the espn app and the fox sports/nbc sports apps.
Glad to hear it. It is not available here yet, but I am getting it when it comes out. Is it easy to switch between channels? I can stream the apps you mentioned, but it is obviously a pain in the ass to go back and forth.
got very excited when I got this email yesterday. new (free) chromecast the channel switching is instantaneous and I'd say maybe once a week I have an error and just have to unplug the chromecast and plug back in. 2nd viewing device has been a 1st gen chromecast, which is about a 60 second load time when you change channels. Not a problem 6 days a week since it's plugged into bedroom TV but when I pull that out to the den for Saturday CFB it's annoying to change. XBox will fix that. How far down the line is firetv from getting an app?
Thats good to know - thanks. I have a 1st gen Chromecast and will get a new one, then have the same setup as you. Regarding FireTV, I am not sure, but will ask. Id have to think it would be right around the corner.
I was thinking of getting a 2nd gen chromecast since there is that lagtime with the 1st gen one. and then when I logged into it one day the pop up appeared that said I was eligible to get a free one and I literally did this
free Chromecast 2nd gen>>>into the HDMI In port on my Xbox one + Google home = Voice control of my TV, Xbox, cable, and music collection/subscription I can walk into my living room and say "hey Cortana, Xbox on" and my follow up command "ok Google, watch ESPN" or any other content request..."ok Google watch <TV show, movie, YouTube video>" and it turns on and starts playing nearly instantly. It even knows the right service/subscription to pull from after one use. Now I want my bedroom TV to do the same thing. As soon as my free Google home mini arrives, I can set it up. Also, update: ESPN3 content is included with YouTube TV. Doesn't show up in YTTV app, but use your YTTV login in the ESPN app or website and its all there.
Here is the guide for both NBC Sport and Kodi on firestick : NBC Sport Kodi How to install kodi on firestick
What’s the difference between Hulu Live TV and YouTube TV? They look to be the same price and offer the same lineup
I just checked and still didn't see it on mine. I have had NBCSN for awhile but not the local NBC. ABC is still the only local channel I have through Directv Now.
I didn't realize that it goes by location. I have regular NBC, but I think they offer it based on the distance you live from the tower. I am only 7 miles from it.
Yeah I was reading some shit about it and it is a huge pain in the ass to stream local broadcast channels. The federal communications laws make it hard to just push the stream like they do the other channels. They're supposed to be adding a ton of locations for NBC but they gave no timeframe when they will be added though.
Yeah, apparently if you live within a certain distance from the broadcast tower, it's not a big deal for them to add, but otherwise it's the pain in the ass that you mentioned. I have a $10 antenna from Amazon and get about thirty channels over the air. If my TV wouldn't have quit today, I'd be pretty smug.
youtube tv is awesome so far. only issue is it doesn't get cbs and neither does my antenna can't wait for that free chromecast
Oh well I didn't realize you lived in a city. I have one of the paper style antennas and get a ton of channels. It's fantastic. That will solve the problem.
I have this one. It's fantastic, but I am really close to the towers. The powered ones that are about $10 more are great if you have visibility issues to the stations.
The biggest issue I had during my YouTube tv trial was it not allowing me to cast a prime-time ESPN game (think it was WVU/VT) to my tv. I could watch it on my phone but it wouldn't allow me to cast the game.
