Will also drop 100% if they lose NBC Bay Area. Gotta have my Gigantes/Dubs or the extra cost of YTTV is not happening.

Not sure dropping a month to month service that will likely negotiate the terms before too long (assuming they don't agree to terms by the 30th) for signing a 1 or 2 year contract with a cable company is a wise move but you do you

    Thanks.

Have had YTTV for three years. It’s been great for the most part. But the cost has continued to rise, I can no longer watch the Braves and this would eliminate a majority of the channels I watch. It wouldn’t be a useful product for me anymore if I can’t watch what I want to watch.

I've always had varying success with those. I'd like to not have to switch back and forth between different inputs as well.

I think what's different in your estimation and mindset compared to mine is that you seem to be thinking that this is the type of thing that won't get resolved for a long time, if ever. My mindset is that even if they reach the 30th without an agreement, they will likely have one in place shortly thereafter, within a month or less. Obviously time will tell.

Cable for me is an absolute last resort. I would be subscribing to every FUBO, Hulu, Sling, Philo, etc...before I give any more money to the antiquated cable industry.

I've had an antenna now for a couple years + streaming. I really enjoy it. And if you have a TCL tv it will integrate some streaming services into a guide so you can switch between OTA channels and streaming channels. It does it for the Roku app iirc

What makes you so confident? YTTV is direct competitor to Comcast. Why not have Comcast roll the dice for a bit to see if they could bump peacock numbers up and have people switch from Google?

I was gonna drop it because of this NBC thing but I share it with others, so I guess it’s Peacock and my antenna. No other site gives out 5 subs for sharing.

NBC is a network. We're not talking Sinclair and Fox Sports RSN's here. When has any cable, streaming, or satellite company ever gone more than a couple weeks without working out a deal with one of the 4 major networks? Sure...every service has contract disputes from time to time and it's an inconvenience for the customers but a major network? The norm is for those to be very, very short disturbances.

You are right though in that this situation is a bit different in the world we live in now but its not in either companies best interest to have this be a long, drawn out ordeal. YTTV doesn't want to lose a bunch of subscribers that they have to try to win back and Comcast doesn't want to piss off Google who has the ability, power, and capital to make all sorts of things difficult for them.

YTTV has to know people are pretty much tapped out when it comes to how much theyll pay for this. It's done nothing but rise. With how easy it is to cancel and sign up, I'll only keep it during football season if it goes up anymore.

In my experience these short ones range from one day to a couple weeks. And usually once these extensions start a long term deal does ultimately get reached without the channels ever going down.

Sports leagues, teams and media executives are so concerned about the hemorrhaging regional sports network business that they actively are trying to figure out ways to reinvent it.

One of the most intriguing ideas that has been discussed recently involves Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin, an executive who has not been known for sports media deals but who has had several meetings in recent months to see if there’s a path for his company to jump into the flagging RSN business.

Rubin’s meetings with league, team, distribution and network executives have been dormant for several weeks and nothing is imminent, as sources say Fanatics is concentrating on expanding other parts of its business before tackling media.

Several sources said that these talks with Rubin could pick back up again next year. Plus, leagues, teams and media companies are considering several options beyond Fanatics.

Still, the mere fact that these meetings with Rubin took place underscores just how concerned sports executives are about a business that has been a cash cow for teams over the past 30 years.

This story is based on interviews with nearly a dozen executives who have direct knowledge of these meetings.

Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin has taken meetings recently about the RSN business as his company expands beyond licensed goods.GETTY IMAGES
Rubin’s presence in these meetings may come as somewhat of a surprise, especially since Fanatics is best known as a sports licensing company. But Fanatics has been expanding its business well beyond licensed goods, evidenced by the long-term trading card deals it signed this summer with the NBA, NBPA, MLB, MLBPA and NFLPA. Plus, company executives have made no secret of the fact that they want to get more involved in selling tickets and gambling.

Media rights, especially through a direct-to-consumer offering, would mark a logical next step for Rubin and Fanatics.

That’s why, from the leagues’ and teams’ perspective, Fanatics has emerged as the type of company that is best-positioned to save RSNs, which are among the most distressed parts of the media business.

RSNs are seeing costs from rights fees rise every year while revenue from distributors drops because of the increasing numbers of consumers who no longer subscribe to pay television.

This is hugely important for teams since the money that comes in from local rights deals account for more than half of teams’ overall revenue in many cases.

It simply is not an option for teams to lose that revenue, which means that the leagues are looking for someone — anyone — who can maintain that level of revenue with a declining business. In other words, the leagues need to find a company that’s willing to lose money initially with the promise of a bigger payoff down the road.

Private equity is an option, but sources said leagues are lukewarm to those companies in this instance because they are more interested in short-term gains.

    Enter Rubin.

Leagues view Fanatics as a direct-to-consumer company that already has relationships with the country’s top sports properties, not to mention a database that has the information on more 80 million fans — their favorite sports teams and what sports merchandise they are buying.

League executives have spent the better part of a decade trying to convince one or more of the FAANGs — Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google — to invest in sports rights.

Increasingly, they are looking at Fanatics in the same way. It has established itself in the merchandise and trading cards spaces. It plans to grow in the sports betting and ticketing businesses.

A media business, similar to Amazon Prime, would be a logical extension, which appears to be a main reason why Rubin took those meetings.

If Fanatics were to make a move, it would need to get control of the local rights, which may be the easiest step. Sources say NBCUniversal and AT&T have been trying to find buyers for their RSNs. And top executives from leagues and media companies share a common belief that the Sinclair subsidiary Diamond Sports Group, which owns 21 Bally Sports-branded RSNs, could be headed into bankruptcy.

One idea that was discussed had Fanatics aggressively building a direct-to-consumer business with both local and out-of-market rights while essentially milking the traditional linear business.

The upshot from all of these meetings is that there are no easy answers and no imminent solutions for the RSN businesses.

The question is whether someone like Rubin will emerge as an answer to these problems.

Sinclair’s Q3 numbers are out and they have over 12 billion in debt. They claim they have the liquidity necessary to make it through the next year, in time to launch their RSN streaming network in 2022 (likely prior to the baseball season) but they haven’t even formed up deals with the NHL or NBA, so who knows what’s going to happen.

I think a prolonged MLB lockout could be the death blow for Sinclair, so I gotta say sorry baseball Bros, you need to fall on the sword for humanity.

NFL viewers - if you could only pick one, same pricing, would you choose to have Redzone + local market games or Sunday Ticket, no redzone access?

I think I’d go red zone as there are rarely out of market games I feel like watching that don’t get the key moments captured via redzone.
