Over the last 15 months my directv bill bundled with internet has averaged $135. Not sure cutting the cord is worth it to lose 2 dvrs, hbo, and log into any device and stream HBO, espn, or FS1 wherever I am.

our plan is about 10 years old. Do you have truly unlimited data with no caps and no throttling?

I don't ever get throttled, but I don't use an extreme amount of data either. I used 9 gigs last month and am at 7 gigs right now.

I will be honest, I had better connection signal with ATT and Verizon. In places around town i have dead spots where I can't get shit for data (in a restaurant or shopping center) but its not a big deal. If you have sprint today, its probably going to be the exact same service.

If it's 135 I'd probably just keep it. Mine started pushing 185 and I got out. It's about 115 now for internet and Vue so I'm content

    $50 for 400 down/20 up
    $38 for YTTV

Save upwards of $75/month over traditional plan that I cut

Thinking about upgrading my device. I currently have fire sticks and like the interface but want something that can stream 4K and I can use YTTV. What’s the general rec?

Chromecast shouldn't even really be in the same discussion as other streaming media players. It's fine if every app you want to use supports casting and you don't mind using your phone as the remote all the time though. It's far less user friendly than something like Roku or Apple TV.

So I am currently running YTTV on my roku stick in the family room and sometimes it resets by itself or is slow/buffering. Is that because the roku stick isn’t as powerful as the roku ultra? If that is the case then I plan on upgrading, but I’m looking for the best upgrade. I just need something that will run YTTV, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video. Should I go to the roku ultra or Apple TV or something else I don’t know of that will support those apps?

Several factors in play. What's your internet speed? Do you do speed tests to check to see if your speed is dropping or not?

On one of my TVs I have an Ultra and have never had an issue. I have 100 mbps but it actually ends up being around half that because Cox is dumb af. Still plenty fast to do what I need though.

I have up to 250 mbps with Comcast. Not sure how to do speed tests. Is 250 too much? It’s just my wife and I and a 1yr old. Basically two phones, one tv on at a time and our security system that uses the internet

What kind of pron does your security system like?

You are fine coming into your house and going. What you need to worry about is the connection between the device streaming, and your router.

Yeah, you're speeds are sufficient for what you're doing. If the $100 for the Roku Ultra isnt a huge deal to you then I'd suggest it. The best and most reliable connection will be to directly connect the Ultra to your router with an Ethernet cable. Thats what I do but that may not be possible for you depending on where your router is.

My parents want to cut their cable bill, to the point my mom wants to buy a huge antenna to put on the top of the house (I know, I told her how idiotic that is). Their hangup on switching to YTTV is eliminating their landline. Comcast is only offering a cable + phone bundle for the lowest speed internet. Any suggestions or workarounds so they can keep their landline?

You don’t need to get a landline from Comcast. Cancel that port their number over to another carrier. There is still going to be a cost obviously, just saying not sure there is huge savings here.

Same thing happened with my parents. I tried and tried to convince them they didn't need a landline but that didn't work. Brother in law ended up buying them an ooma. It's like 100 bucks for the phone but its free VoIP service and they seem to like it.

You don't need the $100+, large, roof mounted antenna to get your local channels, unless your parents are very remote, are among hills/mountains, or placing in basement, etc.

In fact, they have versions <$50 which will work for people who live really close to towers.

Put an antenna in the attic and use Comcast's wiring to run it to all the TVs. Find the main splitter in the attic and just tie in there.

my $20 antenna sucks now that i moved further away from columbus. depending on if i want nbc or the others, i have to mess with it to get the best signal. wonder if one of those flat $50 would work better. mine has rabbit ears, but is powered.

My wife has been hounding me about cutting the cable and I am apprehensive about it. Currently I pay like $155 for Comcast cable and internet get all the premium nextworks with 4k DVR. I have been friends houses to watch football games and they are constantly switching between apps or the video is buffering or just flat out isnt working. That shit would piss me off immediately. Is it worth it to save an extra $50ish a month and sacrifice the convenience I currently have?

Also YTTV is not available in my area, so what would be my next best option?

Need some technical help for the game bros.

I’m in Canada for the game, and apparently WatchESPN doesn’t fucking work up here. Last resort I can use reddit.com/CFBstreams , but that’s not always reliable for big games — already fucking up for UF - UM. I have an IPad with the converter to stream through the TV.

Any ideas? Anybody else watching without cable/not with WatchESPN?

I don't think they care about the physical satellite dish. I've seen people move out with the house sitting empty for months and the dish is still there. Of course I am assuming the resident wasn't stupid enough to stay signed up for Dish service at an empty house.
