There are a lot of similarities between Looking Glass and Rorschach. Judd called LG's mask his "face" like Rorschach referred to his. They both keep their masks on while they eat, both are effective interrogators
seems like he’s there to be an ode to the more mainstream, positive interpretation of Rorschach. Especially since the Seventh Cav’s (and one might argue, Moore’s) take on Rorschach is so pervasive in the story and was always going to be polarizing to certain viewers.
Tim Blake Nelson being involved as a native Tulsan is cool. Not too many options. Bill Hader already has an HBO show, and I’m guessing they didn’t ask Gary Busey.
I am not at the point to say they completely perverted it at least based on what I saw in the movie (I understand the comic may have been different). He was a social conservative and entirely dogmatic about his version of the truth being known. He was a sympathetic character but also very fucking flawed. His version of justice was also entirely over the top by the standards of the others. We are just seeing it applied by the worst form of social conservatives.
I’ve always thought of it as Rorschach the extremist objectivist vs. Ozymandias the extremist utilitarian. a lot of the “Rorschach is a racist” stuff isn’t reality in the book. He complains about women who sleep with multiple men and about “welfare queens.” But the racism stuff seems to come from Moore’s interviews about the character. That being said, the Seventh Cav’s use of him as a totem is really clever and natural. The great thing about an unflinchingly principled character is that it’s very believable how extremists could idolize them.
Damon Lindelof’s last cult portrayal was a group of ladies who kept quiet and chain smoked but you don’t see anyone up in arms over that
One other thing on Rohrschach, his journal would have spoken about police corruption or incompetency and the masked heroes corruption, so there is that too for how they are applying the dogma. If corruption is too strong then at least not doing what they are supposed to do.
Got a chance to read first ~100 of graphic novel. I’m upset I didn’t get informed of this earlier. Also feel like I would have loved comic books if they’d been a big deal(amongst the crowd I was hanging with) when I was younger.
Really like the show, but feel lost in spots. Would reading the original 12 issues shed light on what's going on right now, or is this a spinoff?
It’s more of a sequel than anything. And yes it helps tremendously imo. I read them between eps 1 and 2 and I was able to pick up on a few things I never would have if I didn’t.
It’s a continuation of the 12 issue series. Off the top of my head it will; Somewhat explain the motivation of the 7th Kavalry Explain somewhat who Jeremy Irons is and his “play” Explain somewhat Hooded Justice Somewhat explain Vietnam being part of the USA and much much more
Read the book because everyone should read it. Watch the movie because naked Marlin Akerman is cool. If you are really feeling it read the Doomsday Clock because I think we’ll see some similar storylines before it’s all said and done (no, Superman will not be joining this show).
I liked that episode a lot. It connected a lot of dots to the original. Jean Smart was really good as were all of the main characters. Are we supposed to think that ozymandias is a prisoner on Mars?
Last night’s episode was awesome. Ordered the graphic novel before I went to bed, looking forward to being caught up by next week.
OK, I totally had a brain fart and thought she was Night Owl. The source material with names is not fully organized in my brain yet. I forgot she is Silk Sceptre. As a result I interpreted that as her being allowed to wear her costume and mask again. I am an idiot. Also, I watched about half of the motion comics and the entire movie. Did the graphic novel show this side of her personality or is this entirely new? If new, I still think it is fine from the standpoint that is thirty years later and she can easily be a lot wiser and more cynical after everything she has been through. regardless, it is much more entertaining than hearing a man voice her role in the motion comics.
iirc, Laurie never really wanted the superhero life and was kind of pushed into it by her mom. After realizing some years later she could walk away from that life she realized it was the only life she could really truly have. Quoting something I read elsewhere, "Laurie is hunting down the ghosts of her past in the life she never wanted"
Apologies if this has been explained, but what was the motive behind the white night? Just that a terrorist organization hates the police?
HBO is doing The Official Watchmen Podcast. They did this w Chernobyl as a companion piece and it was really awesome. The director of Chernobyl is the host and talking w Lindelof. It was pretty good and insightful. I wish they'd do it after each episode, but they're doing it every 3.
Also - after the car was dropped. That shining circle - I assumed it was from the Archimedes, but it also kind of looked like Mars. Seems a bit too on the nose that maybe Dr Manhattan had something do w it. Idk.
So we've got Dr Manhattan - Mars Ozymandius - Mars, maybe. Otherwise alone experimenting with clones Silk Spectre - Manhattan's ex, in FBI now, looking into the Tulsa chaos Nite Owl - in jail Judd Crawford - dead, tulsa police cheif and secret 7th calvary, maybe Angela Abar - sister night secretly and in the middle of the tulsa chaos Wheelchair guy - Abar's grandfather and ???, missing after picked up with sky magnet 7th calvary - still going after cops with a bigger plan we don't know about yet Without getting into themes and motives and such, is that about where we are?
Why do we think Ozymandius is possibly on Mars? Because he's in jail so to speak, in a weird place where tomatoes grow on trees?
I thought it was clear by her reaction that she thought it was Dr. Manhattan who was responsible. I also rewatched parts of the first episode and Ozymandius being on mars or in space is pretty clear. THey talk about space, look to the sky, focus on stars, zoom in to what looks like the surface of a planet and then boom grass appears out of nowhere.
