I keep trying to get through the French Revolution but I die out around Ep 13 each time. I also have this amazing ability to zone out while I drive and I don't remember a damn thing I heard.
I just listened to the Russian Revolution again once he got done with his time off for book writing. Helped me keep the narrative in place. It’s incredible what he has done all by himself for these years. Love the appendices tying it all together too. I will follow Duncan with whatever he does in the future.
It's a lot more like an academic work than what Carlin does, but the format is less than ideal. I think there were back-to-back episodes about Russian Orthodox priests and 1905 revolutionaries. It's kind of jarring if you're listening 30 minutes at a time
I spent the last year listening to the Russian Revolution to wind down before I went to bed. It is incredibly dense and knocked me out within 20 mins every night. These appendices though are phenomenal and imo should be a must listen for students studying the era. I think his Haitian Revolution is his opus
I havent started yet. Description says "This show picks up where Thor's Angels left off" Thors angels was about the fall of rome/early dark ages. So I assume this covers the late middle ages. No clue this is a new series or a one off. But it's a time period he hasnt touched on in while
I mean - it was aired probably 5+ years ago. Im sure you can go into this one without it. I barely remember much about it
Finished Twilight of the Aesir. Could just listen to the last hour and be fine. So much rambling before that without much substance. Said at the end there's a part 2 coming.
I agree with this. Feels like we got 2.5 hours rehashing that Vikings made landfall raidings over and over
I'm super late to this pod, but Flash Point History is exceptional. The dialogue is very similar to Hardcore History, and it's only real difference is the delivery. Dan's is hard to match. However; if you love history and love the format of Hardcore History, you should check it out. I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere, even if I can't find it with the search function. For example:
I’ve been re-listening to supernova in the east while going to sleep for the past few months. I hope I can remember what’s going on in the aesir when I dig in tonight.
Can’t remember if we have a Mike Duncan thread or not but he had some thoughts on the napoleon Ridley Scott movie https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/ridley-scott-napoleon/
Didn’t think it was quite as gruesome as he said it was going to be at the beginning. Thought blueprint was worse but maybe because he kinda oversold
Verdun, the story about the guy shoving his fist in his mouth to keep from screaming at the Somme, and Passchendaele all left me pretty much speechless
Agreed Vikings was dull and while Nova was good it had dull moments. It was not nearly as good as Blueprint, Ostfront, etc. I haven't been able to put my finger on what's changed but I think he's telling less details and more about why things were happening. Not sure though.
I think this is it. There’s no new incite. It’s like ya, Vikings did some raids, got it. Tell me something more granular, something I didn’t know
I forgot about this. "Trying to overthrow the government makes total sense if you believe the election was stolen." Just an all-time bad take
I think the viking story suffered from having too little historical narrative to protect dan from going too wayward in his little trips away from the storyline that he loves. I honestly think that his Vikings story shouldve been 1 big 5 hour episode, dont think there was more content needed than that.
I just read that recently. It's really good. Learned a lot. It's been a minute since I listened to the Vikings one. Did he reference that book in it?
he had an opportunity to talk to the chamber of commerce republicans and pull some out of the Trump funk and totally blew it
I just purchased Blueprint for Armageddon and started a re-listen and literally the next day he released a new pod Thank me.
The fun thing about me and Dan Carlin is that his voice now puts me to sleep. So I get 5-35 mins a night before I pass out. Happy when I get a full series to last a month
Re: sleeping to the show. two episodes on the do not listen at bed time list: Painfotainment and Human Resources.
