Which will be longer, the amount of time for him to finish the Alexander series or the amount of time Alexander's final empire existed?
I finished this morning. I thought it was really good. Learned a lot. Spoiler The part about how battle lines would drift to the right becuase soldiers would unconsciously leaning into the shield of the guy next to them was really interesting. As well as just the cultural differences between city states, greece in general and macadonia.
He’s kinda hinted at it before but I hope the next series is essentially the capper to his WW1/2 series’s and focuses on the fall of Berlin/collapse of the third reich. Five to six episodes starting with the rise of the Nazi party, formulation of the final solution and setting up the concentration camps, to the invasion of Poland, ‘briefly’ touch on the eastern front since he’s covered it before, then and ep on DDay and the allied push through Europe, liberation on the death camps, an episode or two on the fall of Berlin itself to the Russian’s and Hitler’s suicide, and finally finishing off with the Nuremberg trials and Nazi hunting in South America. That or the US Civil War would be pretty interesting from his perspective to hear the historical similarities as it relates to what we’re dealing with today.
Im a little burned out on WW2/ Nazi stuff. Especially from a tactical perspective. I do find the political environments of the time very interesting but he’d never touch that. Same reason he’d never touch the civil war.
If you like The Rest is History, you'll probably like Empire. Similar in format. Two Brits mostly go over the history of the British Empire/colonization ect. Same perspective on history, british banter ect. I like it. Actually think The Rest is History guys mentioned them and that's how I found it. Same network or something.
I'm going to have to revisit Supernova. I listened as the first couple of episodes came out and it really dragged for me. Could have just been what I was doing at the time or whatever Also for people saying Civil War, there is a podcast that has like 60 episodes on Gettysburg alone. I think it's just called the Civil War Podcast. There's too much tactical stuff for me but if you're into why people hated the 5th cousin of the of Romanovs, you might like it.
Dropping this in here because while unrelated, the model is almost identical and I think quite a few of you would appreciate it. Anyhow, there is a podcast called Acquired that has a very similar approach to their podcast to Carlin. Essentially these two dudes talk through the history of a company about twice a year. May sound dumb, and possibly it’s just a niche listen for me but I recently read a review or quote that lead me here. “I think corporations are the biggest and best non fiction stories of our day. There’s no Roman Empire anymore. If you’re looking for a story like the legends of old it’s Apple Microsoft and LVHM.” Combine that with the hosts approach, you don’t have to listen long to realize they put so much time and effort into studying their subject, which I think is one of the pieces I appreciate most about Carlin. I’ll shut up and stop rambling but couldn’t not locate the pod thread and kind of think a lot of people dropped them off their agendas.
Idk w this is but it feels like an April's fools prank. Its good tho. But can see it turning a lot of his listeners off
Is it some sci-fi story? I know he was writing some book series when he was doing the Russian revolution
It is. Done w a shitload of social commentary of current times. So far at least . Right away feels like a mix of The Expanse and Red Rising. Which are two of my faves, so cool w me!
He has done a civil service with his Revolutions Series. I'm not into this new genre, but more power to him. I was really hoping he did a history of American Political parties series that he alluded to in some episodes years ago.
He did mention he's been recording a more conversational history podcast with someone else. A historian I think. Didnt catch their name. But I assume that one will launch somewhat soon
Been a minute since I caught one of his tweets. Went to look to see if he's mentioned his podcast host I referenced. He's just the best
Had my first chance on a long drive to try this today. Picked Sequoia Capital over LVMH. Very interesting, but now that I know how they do it, I am betting LVMH (having learned a bit about the Arnaults recently) is even better. thanks again.
Haven’t listened to their new pod yet but based on the episode’s description, definitely bangin “Alexis grills Mike about his podcast polygamy. While launching their show, Duncan secretly rekindled Revolutions. Alexis, feigning indifference, demands to know all about his double life—but she’s not jealous.” lol, 5 minutes in and she’s making open podcast relationships jokes
It's hard to not hear all that after the divorce comment. Her new project sounds pretty cool. Cant wait for them to actually dig into history stuff. Im a big fan of both.
The Rest is History did one recently on the lead up. I think they may have one that covers the war too. As someone who loves WWI era history, the war itself really isn't all that interesting. If you decide you want to go deeper and read/audiobook, The Sleepwalkers is a great deep dive into the lead up. It's one of the main texts the Rest is History used for those episodes.
Rest is History has a series about Franz Ferdinand and the one that led up to the start of the war. It's fantastic, as is almost everything they do. It's not a summary, probably like 10 episodes between the two series
The Great War Podcast History of the Great War World War 1 Podcast History of the Twentieth Century And Carlins, I went way down the rabbit hole on the 100th anniversary.
To add, the Twentieth Century one was my last listen. Was a lot more informative for the pre war conditions of the world. It was also cool to see the ramifications post war and then leading into WW2, currently in WW2. Really looking forward to how he covers Korean War.
https://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-50-55-blueprint-for-armageddon-series/ Very much into this one. And if this isn't enough you can at least get an idea of which areas you want to learn about further after listening.
I watched a lot of ‘The Great War’ series on YouTube as it aired episodes that happened that week 100 years prior. I really enjoyed it.
Idk how many are listening to his Martian Revolution thing. I'm enjoying it. Buuuut he announced hes rebooting the Revolutions podcast when it's over. Will cover the post WW1 revolutions he always intended to get to but got burned out
His Duncan and Coe History Show has been a nice short end podcast whenever they do release something. much more micro focused but well thought out
