Having to write/design lectures and presentations for a living, I find him impressive as hell. Does he repeat himself, exaggerate, etc? Of course. But not as much as most would. And the people who criticize it are the ones you know balk at giving a suicide-inducing ten minute PPT pres at work.
Downloading Thor's Angels now. Charlemagne is interesting as fuck from a leadership perspective, so I'm pumped. Much less ego and vanity compared to most rulers of around his time.
I listened to Thor's Angels on a road trip this weekend. I really enjoyed it for many reasons, but I thought his discussion of the evolution of the ruling Germanic tribes and the debate over Christian doctrine was really cool. Basically, they had to amend Christian doctrine to legitimize Charles Martel and all of the fighting before and after that.
Im pretty much caught up on all my tv, books, pods - so Ive been listening to the old HH episodes. It's kind of fun see to the evolution he's taken. In one, he apologized for an episode that was "a horrendously long hour and fifteen minutes."
The earlier eps were cool because it was more of him just putting his perspective on the subject, and less getting into the gritty details of how things went down. I love the latter, but I think it would be cool if he did some one-off episodes mixed in with the big series sets. Either way, I love it, and cant' get enough
The idea of sort of merging Jesus and Thor was awesome too. To the franks Jesus almost became a warrior god.
Prophets of doom is my favorite so far for the same reason carlin loved the topic. "There's no solid floor on the weirdness scale." The torture procedures they used are straight terrifying.
anyone listen to the new common sense? thought he did a great job with the innovation discussion. I guffawed for some reason when he was like "and you're going to make this about socialism vs capitalism? I mean come on." just got a good hearty laugh out of it
I always listen in the car so I can't write down a note, but does anyone remember the names of the painters/paintings that he talks about in Thor's Angels? He talks about a few and I really want to google them
Pretty excited about this next series. I dont know anything about the Haitian Rev mikeduncan If you don't know already we're doing the Haitian Revolution next. Ep 4.1 will post Dec 6. 11/25/15, 8:14 PM
Anyone listen to the "Extra" episodes? In the one for Thor's Angels, he talks about how it was suppose to be a tight hour-long biography about Charlemagne, but developed into a 4 hour audio novella that barely mentioned him. Evidently the same thing happened with Death Throes of the Republic--it ostensibly started as a biography about Cleopatra.
Listening to yesterday's Revolution's Pod. My Goodness at the torture methods of those slaves. This is so fascinating/interesting. Interesting that race wasnt a an issue (as long as you were free) in Haiti until outside influences made it one.
Dan tweeted a bunch this morning that they are about to release the second episode to King of Kings. No word on an exact date, but one of his followers made a joke about having a long flight tomorrow and Dan teased that he might have it out by then.
I wish I could go back in time and tell teenage Hoss that he'd one day be a grown ass man gets truly excited about getting to listen to a 4 hour history lecture just to see the stupid look on my stupid face.
That entire series was amazing. That war is so breezed over in school. I can't even begin to imagine how terrifying that must have been just moving from trench to trench with dead bodies and rats and lice and shit all around you.
Is Common Sense any good? It's about current politics right? I just don't want to ruin HH if he has terrible political opinions.
I like it. I have difficulty predicting how people from different ends of the political spectrum react to things, but I'm a dirty liberal who hasn't been terribly upset with anything he's said, even if I might disagree with it. Nothing too polarizing one way or the other, I don't think. But I've only been listening to Common Sense for the past 4-5 months, don't know if his views have evolved over time with it.
Imo - it doesn't ruin HH. I only agree with maybe half of his opinions. He does a good job of explaining why he feels that way. He also usually comes at whatever topic he's covering from a different angle that makes it interesting, despite not agreeing. He also often casts the topic against historical similarities. When he talked about the Syrian refugee he framed it against how Rome pushed the barbarian tribes out of their region and made it pretty interesting. I stayed about from Common Sense for the longest time because I just had no interest in a political pod becasue I figured it would be complaining like how mostly politics are discussed in the media - but it's not that at all and I wish I would have started listening sooner
Speaking of history pods - New History on Fire pod was released last week. It was on the Alexander Hamilton v Aaron Burr duel. Good stuff
How do you order the rest of the HH episodes? I downloaded the app but every time I try to do anything it steers me to his website. Do I have to order them individually off his site?
As in rank them? What app did you DL? He only has the 10 or so most recent available for free. The older ones in the archive you have to pay for.
Yeah but how do I pay for them and get them onto my podcast app or the HH app? Do I do that through Itunes or through his website? Sorry for the questions I've just never paid for a podcast before and his is definitely worth it.
Oh. Gotcha. Ive never paid either, but agree his are worth it. I can help if you have an iPhone. Not sure about android
http://metro.co.uk/2016/04/12/proof...mummy-was-found-wearing-adidas-shoes-5810343/ This was before genghis started running shit, but a 1500 year old complete burial site was just found in Mongolia. There was a horse buried with her. It's pathetic how little I knew about them until the wrath of the khans.
It's been a while since I listened to Wrath of the Khans but didn't the Tar Tars and possibly another bad ass group like the Huns come from the same general area as the Mongols- the Asian Steppe?
^Look into the Race to the Sea Basically, before the Race to the Sea, the French counterattacked the exposed western flank of the German army, ended the German advance into France, and prompted a fighting retreat Along the entire western flank that was carried out all the way to the sea (hence, the name). At that point, the German military realized that the strategy to destroy France was out of reach and that they would need to outlast their enemies... At that point, everyone dug in and the French/British started trying to figure out how to attack a fortified German line of trenches (Le el oh el). By the time everyone got to the sea, the armies were spent and winter was approaching, so a lull allowed the truly horrifying experience of World War I to emerge.
I went to download some old episodes of HH and noticed that they've made 3 interview episodes available for free. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up in case you haven't listened to them yet. http://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-25-the-dyer-outlook/ http://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-24-classical-hanson/ http://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-18-a-fly-on-james-burkes-wall/
Just listened to Ghosts of the Ostfront series. Should I listen to the Punic Wars or Death Throes of the Republic next?
Re-listening Blueprint for Armageddon right now. Verdun has to be the worst human experience for a mass group of people besides the Holocaust right? There is no way in hell I would keep my wits in that sort of circumstances.
