Yeah but that doesn't seem as prolonged. Of course knowing that you were probably about to get raped and killed would be awful, but it's gonna happen as soon as they arrive.

In Verdun, you're sitting in a trench for months at a time. Living with corpses, shit, lice, mice, no sleep, shells exploding constantly, and you know that your turn for the front line where you will likely die is coming up next week. And both sides are experiencing this hell unlike the Mongols.

So Carlin seems in love with Alexander The Great but I don't see where he's covered his conquests. True or am I just missing it? All I saw was Alexander vs Hitler.

I think his "King of Kings" segment ends with Alexander's reign and death

He's already alluded to Alexander and Philip in the past episode plus he's stated he would do a segment on Alexander eventually

I could see this segment taking as long as his WWI one if done right

I figured since Alexander seems to be one of Carlin's favorite's and he's always referencing him he'd have covered his time as a ruler. Maybe one day.

He said he wants this to be Persian centric/Persian POV. I doubt he shifts to and Hellenic POV after that.

He usually covers topics on the fringe of well known events. Alexander the Great has been done to death. I doubt he does a full out series on him. If he does it will be an obscure aspect of his time.

Still think it can be Persian centric with views of alexander from Persian POVS which would be very different. Him coming across as a terrorist would fit his mantra

It also would tie into today's modern hysteria of east vs west, which every historian likes to do.

Idk if he would go all the way until his death or just until he hit India

I dunno man. Genghis Khan has been done to death too and he managed to make a 4 part series on the Mongols. I think part of the point is that you learn a lot more than what's taught in the history books.

When do y'all think the next part will come out? :idk:

I dont really agree that the Mongols have been done to death compared to Alexander. Their impact on western civ is pretty minimal which is mostly the focus of school. During the same time period I think most history courses are focusing on Charlemagne and The Renaissance, while the Mongols and Chinese history gets a quick brush over.

Anyway, Id love it for him to do a deep dive into Alexander, so I hope Im wrong. It's almost been 3 months since his last pod, so hopefully one is coming soon

Also think history on fire isn't that good. I think the topic choices are solid but the author just has no narrative abilities and it seems so inorganic and forced. He has cool material and quotes but he does a poor job blending it into the story

Giants of History is great, so is 10 American Presidents.. I also like My History Can Beat Up Your Politics

At this point, I almost wish he would do a weekly 30 minute to 1 hour history show ala Revolutions. Duncan is half as interesting/fun as Carlin, but god damnit if he doesn't turn out quality week after week for years now. Unfortunately, outside of Rome, the topics he discusses are so boring I can't stand to listen.

Does anyone have a good podcast dealing with Napolean? I want to really delve into European history between Napolean and WW1

You cannot possibly be serious. The Mongols impact on Western civilization is "pretty minimal"???

You couldn't possibly be more wrong. The Mongols utterly destroyed the Abbasid Caliphate, the last Islamic Caliphate, making way for the rise of Western Civilization as the dominant civilization of the world. Which has been the case ever since. At the time of the Mongol destructing of the Abbasid's, Baghdad was the premier city in the world, certainly from a cultural and intellectual standpoint. Nothing in Europe was even remotely comparable. During this time, while Europe was toiling in the mediocrity of the Middle Ages, the Islamic world was in the midst of their Golden Age which had begun in the 8th century. That Islamic Golden Age came to an abrupt end in the 13th century. That abrupt end of the Islamic Golden Age culminated with the Siege of Baghdad (the capital of the caliphate) in 1258. The scientific and mathematical advances made during this golden age are truly remarkable: The development of Algebra and Trigonometry are credited to Muslim mathematicians during this time period, as well as advancements in Geometry and Calculus. Besides math, advances in Astronomy, Anatomy and medicine were all significant during this age.
Hulagu Khan, acting on orders from his brother Mongke Khan (the Great Khan at the time), laid waste to the city following the siege. It literally set the Islamic world back centuries. And if you look around the Middle East and the Islamic world in general, it's pretty obvious that they are yet to truly recover from the Siege of Baghdad, the destruction of the Abbasid caliphate and the end of the Islamic Golden Age. Coincidentally, the end of the Islamic Golden Age also began the Renaissance in Europe (14th to 17th Century) This was possible because the Mongols destroyed the Islamic world and set them back centuries, it allowed the West to rise. The Mongols never did attack Europe the way they did the Middle East. Europe (the West) was spared that fate and because of that, it was allowed to flourish and dominate. That remains true today.

So yeah, the Mongols had a pretty fucking big impact on Western Civilization IMO.

You're right, you didn't say they had no impact on Western civilization. What you said was their "impact was pretty minimal." At which point I completely refuted your assertion. Not sure how or why that makes me a dumbass.

You can't even have a discussion with me on the topic and instead call me a dumbass. Which btw, is all I was trying to do: Have a discussion on a message board. Instead, you'd rather lob a personal attack at me, for no reason whatsoever.

Since you decided to go that route, I will just let my post stand as proof that you, not I are the fucking dumbass here. You can't get into a debate with me on the subject because I've already proven how utterly and completely wrong you are on that point.

Grow up and learn how to have a civil discussion with people man. That was completely uncalled for.

Sorry I didnt give you the benefit of the doubt when most of the time I see you post it involves vile, racist or antisemitic shit.

Anyway, I said compared to Alexander, the Mongols impact was minimal. Alexander and the hellenistic culture which, you know... all of western civilization was spawned from.

I really wish I could thread ban you :(

You ruin everything you touch with your trolling.

Why would he debate you when your response to the point he made is as follows:

You don't invite any sort of reasonable discussion or offer a civilized counterpoint. You act as you always do, like an absolute cunt that believes himself to be the most intelligent person in the room.

You're a troll and a genuinely unlikable person- and you've been at it for a decade now. It's crazy to me, but do you.

Why can't you put that shit behind you? I'm legitimately trying to have a normal conversation and turnover a new leaf. The trolling is tired and played out. I'm so fucking over it. I just want to partake in a normal discussion amongst the other posters on this board. I didn't come out swinging, calling him a moron/idiot/dumbass/etc.

And I did offer a counterpoint. Numerous counterpoints actually. But you don't see that or give credit to any of that because of the name attached to the comments. That's frustrating as hell to me because I genuinely would love to have a discussion/conversation/debate on the topic(s) at hand.

It's at the point where I legitimately think I need to ditch this accoint, change my name and start fresh in order to do so.

I think he meant that they had very little cultural impact, which is kind of true. We have very little art, literature, architecture, etc. that was brought down to us by the Mongols.

There's a reason people considered them to be a plague. Most of the impact they had on our civilization had to do with destruction.
