That makes sense. But then again having not experienced this country as a black male I'm pretty sure I can't really weigh in on "how mad should they be?" Did the AA community shit on Chapelle for his nonsense? I would have been interested in their take
really starting to think he probably had an experience with a trans person at some point in his life that went south on him (figuratively and/or literally) and he's been this way ever since. not every outspoken homophobic evangelical is secretly sucking dick and not every outspoken transphobe has been sexually involved with a trans person but the number for both of those categories is also not zero so...
This is entirely anecdotal based on limited experience(crowds, comments, etc.) but most cis black folk I’ve seen speak about the subject don’t really side with Dave…but they’re not exactly itching to disagree either.
I just watched it. Said essentially the 'kids' can only criticism him if they make a better comedy special about being pro-trans than he did in The Closer. And they won't because he's a "generational talent" Wild stuff
He's in really tight with a ton of musicians I love and it's frustrating. They've got his name all over Blue Note's festival coming up in Napa and it makes me feel some kinda way :/
Yikes. Wasn't even aware of this: In September 2015, Wayans defended American comedian Bill Cosby from his sexual assault accusations, stating, "It's a money hustle". He continued, saying, "Forty years – listen, how big is his penis that it gives you amnesia for 40 years? If you listen to them talk, they go, 'Well, the first time...' The first time? Bitch, how many times did it happen? Just listen to what they're saying and some of them really is unrape-able. I look at them and go, 'You don't want that. Get outta here.'"[17][18]
Yep. I was a massive fan. Killing Them Softly is I think one of the best comedy specials ever. Chappelle Show was transcendent. At least his act sucks now so it's easy to not pay attention to him
This thread started two years ago because he called out Candace Owens for being a right wing puppet. Two years later he is Candace Owens.
I know a guy who was pretty normal and went down a similar descent into right wing Looney Toon land over trans stuff. I basically watched it slowly happen via social media. I just don't understand why trans issues get so many people so worked up. Some to the point of it transforming their entire worldview.
Even when Talking Head was a left poster he was a transphobe. Wonder if that's a common point of entry
It’s the grievance of the month. People who never face oppression feel that they need to invent shit to be mad about. Most will never encounter a trans person but need to feel like anything they disagree with is oppression. Comedians have latched on because they feel their “art form” is being attacked. It’s sad.
I really cant fathom picking NEITHER of these two paths w/r/t trans issues as a cis het male: 1. Who cares, their increased rights don't lessen my rights, I will call them whatever they want to be called. This movement hurts no one. 2. I am a staunch ally and march lockstep with everyone on the sex/gender spectrum I assume that it irks Chapelle that the trans movement has made good progress in acceptance, recognition, and even positive elevation in the last 5 years due in no small part to social media awareness and gen z just basically being way cooler than any generation before it, when such progress is compared to the relative lack of progress made by the AA community in that same period? I dunno, I have no right to say, probably. Just trying to find a theory that explains this lunacy Hate that he and Louis CK, 2 of my comedy idols, have self-immolated like this. What dildos.
With respect to what comedians can and can't say I figure let em say whatever the fuck they want and let the fans decide what they will and won't support. If it costs them fans/money/opportunities that's on them. But I don't support censorship (not saying that you do but some on twitter etc seem kinda horny for censorship)
Yea I've never understood caring about what someone does when it doesn't affect me at all. I honestly couldn't care less what someone wants to be called, what they want to wear, who they want to date/sleep with, what religion they follow or if they do at all, etc. I really can't think of why I should give a damn. Do what makes you happy. Lord knows I don't want people telling me not to do what makes me happy. Just do you.
Chappelle has some unresolved feelings or something quite simple that explains him targeting such a small, vulnerable part of our society. is he religious?
I think it’s as simple as he made a few ignorant jokes in an attempt to be funny and edgy. Something his comedy has always been. When it was pointed out those jokes weren’t that cool, instead of being a little bit gracious and acknowledging it, he went into full shit poster mode and leaned into it and doubled down instead.
I’m not sure if he’s practicing but he once called himself a devout Muslim. the straw that broke the camels back for him with the Chapelle Show was that they were pushing him to do a skit where he was to dress up as a woman. I’m not sure either of those things apply to how hard he’s leaning into this currently tho. I think Truman hit the nail on the head tbh
They don't believe that being trans is a real thing and that people are preying on their kids to make them think they're trans, to ill effect. They're not right, of course, in any away, but that's why they care. Same as like 30 years ago when more people thought being gay was a choice. Basically it boils down to fear and ignorance, cultivated by religion and the right wing.
Think this is also being a little bit generous towards him. It’s pretty evident he’s full of hatred towards the LGBTQ+ community and it has broken his brain
He clearly hates them now. I think that’s a function of not really having a strong position and eventually adopting it because he decided to double down. In a way it’s worse. Maybe I’m applying my anecdotal evidence but I’ve had a few former friends/acquaintances that had zero problem w abortion or had no opinion on gun control. We’re very socially liberal, weren’t bothered by LGBTQ+ issues. But they did like trump because they thought he has edgy and funny. They were pressed on supporting him for all the terrible reasons people support him. They just doubled down on it and went from supporting MAGA shit mostly out of spite to now being true believers. Abortion is a sin, guns will protect you from a tyrannical gov. Groomer rhetoric ect. All from not really caring about any of that just because they couldn’t handle slight criticism. Just seems like a similar path as Chappell is on. I could be way off but that’s my read. I wasn’t trying to generous. As I said - in a way it’s worse than just having an inherent hate of LGBTQ+ because of your upbringing or something.
Something I think is mostly true is that people who are left (or liberal, to an extent) are so because of their beliefs, and those who are republican have their beliefs because they are republican. It’s a whole identity that must be adopted. I don’t have to do anything other than check Fox News to find out what my in-laws think on a subject.
Yeah this is my read as well. Now he doesn't like them because they criticized him which has activated this insanity of him saying he's being cancelled and generally being an asshole now.
Religious nutjobs out there think everyone needs to have the same values they do. They want the freedom to do what they want and say whatever they want, but don't want anyone to be different or have their children learn about anything different(heaven forbid they become tolerant of others). With these people becoming more influential influencing politics and even becoming politicians, I worry about my friends that are gay or trans losing their rights and also who or what groups are next on their list.
If someone does anything to my friends or family as far as I’m concerned that gives me and everyone else permission to pay that forward to these zealots. “When they go low, we go lower” - Mirror Universe Michelle Obama
