No, it already looks cool. Last month's book was great, so I was referring back to that. Cloud Atlas was akin to a bag full of old dicks, however, and I could see how my original meaning may be perverted. Spoiler PM me your email and I'll send it. This goes for anyone that wants the ebook.
It's probably still in my contacts list, I think gmail automatically saves it. But I don't know who is who, so you probably need to remind me.
I cant get myself to start. I like to give myself a few days bewteen books. Finished The Twelve friday night, so maybe I'll start tomorrow
Perpetually affixed to his mouth was an unlit pipe that impregnated his person with the aroma of a Persian market. I love that kind of shit.
It is so cool to experience such diverse writing as Cronin last month and Zafon. Cronin was a great storyteller, a writer that drew you in with details (he reminded me of Stephen King) while Zafon is such a prolific wordsmith he draws you in with elaborate sweeps of his pen.
Interesting book so far.... This is for the first 1/3 of the book (through chapter 16 I think?), so keep that in mind... Spoiler I think it's a really interesting concept, but am having a bit of trouble with all of the characters. I wonder where/when Clara will come back involved as important, I'm assuming she'll get killed but the guy without a face, but so will the dude who she is banging. That is, if the guy without a face is even real. I think it's clear he's living out his favorite book, so I'm assuming that is why we know nothing about the story of the book this novel is centered around. Curious what the importance of the watch maker is? Curious about Farmine (remember, listening not reading) and the giggling detective. Is he real? He's also the guy that was asking about Kerouac (sp) to the keeper of his father. Lots of questions, the many names are throwing me off a big since I can't go back and look them up, but I really like the Zafon's writing style. Also wonder what's going to happen with Daniel and Beatrice considering his best friend is his sister.
Dangerously close to pulling an Arkie Proud and dropping out fo this book. I just cant get into it. Im 37% through. Gonna try and stick it out, but I really want to get back into the ASOIAF
It's picking up, I'm probably just under halfway... I just got through the part where the father/padre tells the story about going to grade school with Carax and some others. Pretty sure he'll tie everything together at the end, hence the amazingly high reviews of the book.
This discussion is not making me excited. The end of the semester is whipping my ass with papers to write, papers to grade, books to reading and write synopses on for a paper under review, and so forth. If I'm not stoked to do pleasure reading, it's going to be tough to do it.
You guys are so fickle Its a book club, like it or not you're supposed to finish it. I haven't started it yet but I guarantee I'll finish it once I do.
I've finished all the ones I've been around for, I just didn't read The Passage since I'd already read it pretty recently.
I haven't started it yet either. It would be ideal to finish it by the end of the month but even if you don't, its not like we're meeting up in real life to discuss it, the thread will still be here whenever you finish.
I'll say this: pound for pound, I like this better than The Passage. Now, hear me out. That's like saying, "I like steak better than apple pie." It's really drawn me in. It's like no other book. Is it a mystery? Fantasy? Love story? I love the characters and the oddness and the setting. I think The Passage may be a better all-around story, but this book just fits a niche for me that I've never seen before. Really enjoying it.
Question... Has anyone gotten to the part where they explain the backstory of the Adayas (sp? - Rich family Carax befriended) This involves that backstory. Spoiler So... Hossa (I think was his name) was poisoned, went crazy etc etc. Then the person who acquired rights to his property was dealing with Adaya? Then he wanted to show Adaya video proof of the house Adaya wanted to prove it was haunted? I'm confused all around with this backstory.
So I'm going to be honest. I'm now halfway done and realizing that I hate all of the characters. I think I may have liked Cloud Atlas better at the same point of the book.
Weird how this happens. I'm a little over half-way and love all the characters (or at least love to hate some of them).
Finished The Dark Tower, going to try to start this tomorrow If I'm not still too emotionally drained.
Finished - Just because of peer pressure guilt from The Blackfish . Meh. I can see why a lot of people loved the book. The guy is such an elegant writer, and I while I can really appreciate that - it just moved so slow for me, and I just felt indifferent about the book and characters all together. Gonna try and read Clash of kings before the end of the month and be ready to hop on January's selection
Chapter 36 I think... Spoiler FINALLY this story is starting to pick up. Holy shit. Anyway, I'm now interested to hear how this ends. When he and Bea were in that house , and creepy stuff started to happen, I thought her Dad was going to walk in on them and be all on Daniel to which I hoped Daniel would be all :fuckyocouch:. Then when the creepy door to the crypt was open, I was like . When he said that he saw Penelope's casket - and that she died at the age of 17, I was like and then when he heard the voice in the basement say I was all and . He retold the story to Fermin but left out the voice, and I was like because it blows my mind why he wouldn't tell Fermin of all people. WTF. Then finally, when he said that he only had 7 days to live and is apparently telling the story post-mortem I was like. All in all it was great something exciting finally happened
I feel like I'm being trolled. Normally I don't like books written in first person, but almost the last 10 I've read have been. At least this book utilizes it well... So far.
It's definitely well-written. I personally just didn't think the story legit picked up until just after halfway.
Just over 3/4 through... I'm surprised no one is discussing stuff here. This is the part I want to talk about. Spoiler Julian and Penelope are were siblings. I can honestly say that I did not expect that despite all of the context clues. I did know Bea and Penelope were both preggers, but I sure hope that Daniel and Bea aren't siblings as well. Still trying to figure out who Clara represents in Julian's story, assuming they are almost identical wrt the main characters at least.
Question about what's her name's Chapter 12, towards the end of the book... Spoiler Whose neck was broken? Why? Was it her friend's husband? I was a litttttle confused with their role.
I just started it last night. I'm about 20% through. I will discuss when I get further because right now I don't have a clue.
I know they described him as having an almost yellowish tint to him, but in my mind he is always black. Can't help it
I have to be at work in less than an hour, but just finished the book. I will give a much more in-depth review when I get home (I know you all can't wait), but will say that I loved this book in a way I have never loved a book before. Not necessarily more, just different. Suffice to say, it was mesmerizing.
Spoiler p sure Penelope got pregnant and died in childbirth along with the baby which explains hers and the 2 foot long coffin in the crypt
