Saw Louis CK last night at the Bellco. Awesome show. What the hell has everyone been doing lately? Thread is on life support
I was gone for about a month and just got back last week. What's up with Rino bars? Went out with some friends for my birthday for beers and a bite to eat at 10 Barrel and went out in Rino afterwards. It wasn't even 11:30 and Matchbox was packed to the point you could barely move and there was a line around the block to get into Meadowlark. That's insane. We ended up at Larimer Lounge, which was ok, but not as good as Meadowlark. Anyway, going to see Holy Ghost at Ophelia's this weekend. Anyone been there for a show?
RiNo is now extremely popular. But fuck 10 Barrel since they are part of AB InBev I've seen a show at Ophelia's before. Great spot for a show and drinks/food. Will be back there to see California Honeydrops in February. Do you have just GA tickets or some kind of reserved table/seating?
Didn't know that about 10 Barrel, but they are a good spot for a large group and they have a nice rooftop patio when the weather is nice. Does Rino getting more popular mean it's getting douchier, like Lodo, too? Nice about Ophelia's. Been there a few times for food/drinks and it was good. Glad to hear it's good as a venue too. And yeah, we've got a table.
Yeah I heard the news of them being acquired a couple years ago when I was visiting a friend in Portland. 10 Barrel is from there and they had just opened up a big place like the one now in Denver. Locals shit all over them there. I really can't see them lasting terribly long in Denver with so many better options to support local breweries once more become aware that they aren't a local brewer. I wouldn't say RiNo is anywhere near the douche level as LoDo. I don't think it will ever get quite to that level either since RiNo seems to cater to smaller spaces and more intimate bars/restaurants than the giant multi-story meat markets like ViewHouse and other places in that area that attract the worst people.
I'm still pissed about Mile High Spirits moving from its old location. Back in that spot, it was 70% hot girls and zero douche factor, just everyone having a great time. Now it's right on the edge of Lodo and it draws a much douchier crowd, more than half are dudes too, and there's a long line every time.
Needed to keep more of the homeless right along Broadway where they used to be all over to discourage walkers from LoDo and act as a deterrent. Still is kinda sketch there, but not nearly as bad as it used to be.
Oh, I forgot. I checked out American Grind, the new burger spot at Avanti, yesterday. High quality burger for sure and could be in the running for best in Denver (I'm partial to Park Burger), but damn it's expensive for what you get. I got a "Cheeseburg", fries and a soda for a little over $14 after tax. That might not sound that bad but the patty is pretty small, about on par with a single patty at In N Out. Everything about it is quality, though. Meat comes from Western Daughters which is the best butcher in Denver IMO.
I haven't accepted a job yet but I'm balls deep in interviews with two of them. Hope to have it wrapped up next week.
I've been wanting to check them out. I was at Avanti like 3 days before their official opening so that sucked. I do agree though from an overall standpoint that most of the food vendors are not exactly "cheap" for what you get. The schwarma place upstairs charges like $11-12 for a relatively small bowl of rice, meat, veggies, and sauce. Avanti is great though. My main critique for them would be to really improve their beer selection. Kinda weak imo and not a whole lot of interesting stuff.
Hit Cerebral last night, then Our Mutual Friend, Ratio, and the Crooked Stave taproom tonight. Great beer you have here
We're going to Boulder :/ Then Friday I'm going snowmobiling at grand lake with my BIL Then Saturday morning we are flying back. But I think I have convinced my wife on this trip that we should entertain the idea of relocating to the Denver area. So fingers crossed
I hate the shawarma place. It's probably the worst shawarma I've ever had and, as you say, it's not cheap. Quiero Arepas is pretty good though. Even my Venezuelan friend thinks it's legit. Have you tried Chow Morso? It looks pretty good when I walk by people eating it, but I always end up elsewhere at Avanti.
Next time you're over that way, check out Black Shirt. Probably my favorite brewery in Rino. That's a good mix, though. Also worth checking out is the bar across from Ratio, Finn's Manor.
Yeah the arepas are really solid. I Chow Morso is one that I haven't tried yet. I really debated it last time I was there but really didn't want something heavy/pasta. But speaking of pasta, Dio Mio in RiNo is legit. Finally went there earlier this week and was very pleased
Haven't tried it yet. Pinche and the other venture Poco Torteria (formerly in Avanti) IMO are good but not great. For example, if I'm gonna have a torta, I'd rather go to Las Tortugas or Taqueria Los Carboncitos than Poco Torteria. Better food at half the price. Same goes for Pinche. There's always a long wait, and there are other places with better tacos around town.
The Ohio St bar was right above the old Penn St bar which always made gameday insane. We moved bars last year though and now are on Larimer
It used to be above Pats on 17th and Market. The name escapes me. Double something Last time I was in Tap 14 above Hayterz it was packed with OSU fans however. That may be it now PSU bar is Larimer Beer Hall
Let's talk underrated restaurants. 2 of my favorites: Chili Verde - upscale (at least compared with somewhere like Carboncitos) authentic Mexican spot on 23rd and Federal. Best upscale Mexican in Denver IMO. Amira Grill - best Middle Eastern food I've had in Denver. It's in a strip mall on Evans just west of I-25 but it's seriously good. Cheap price is a bonus.
El Bohio Criollo is a badass cuban place in a strip mall in Golden off I-70 (Youngfield St). They may make the best cuban sandwich I've had outside of Florida. Right up there, if not better, than Buchi Cafe on 38th. Still trying to get over to Frijoles Colorado on W Alameda in Lakewood. I've passed it a couple times and have been meaning to get over there. Might be a post ski thing coming back from the mountains.
Been to Frijoles. My ex-gf used to live close to it. It's pretty good but I probably haven't had enough Cuban food in my life to give it a proper review. There's a surprisingly good Vietnamese place in that parking lot as well.
Anyone here snowshoe? Got a pair last month and have been looking to break them in to mix it up from skiing. I plan to go up to Rocky Mountain National at least a couple times but looking for some maybe under the radar spots elsewhere with less foot traffic.
Try some of the Jefferson County open space parks this time of year. The south end of Three Sisters park in Evergreen has a trail that should be good.
