Maybe this finally rids of Maxine's pandering bullshit? The apology tour should be highly entertaining.
That's true, but that's part of the objection. The judge denied the defense's request to sequester the jury from the outset. They were instructed to not do any research about the case and ignore any news they might be presented with. But, the fact that she came to the place where at least one juror lives and made those comments is a little different. I don't think it's enough for a mistrial, but if it later comes out that a juror was influenced by that, then a conviction will (and, frankly, should) be overturned.
A trial transcript takes weeks to complete. The reporter has to transfer everything from shorthand. It would be minimally helpful, anyway.
just wing it who cares, it's only this generation's Rodney King verdict and the potential for violence and property loss are at a minimum.
Again, to that dumb Tapper tweet, the jurors can ask a question and have certain testimony read back to them. They're just not going to produce a 30k page transcript overnight for them to use if they want to.
This is such a bizarre thing for people to get hung up on. Juries never get the transcript and seldom, if ever, ask for testimony to be reread. A sixteen day trial isn't going to come down to the precise wording of the answer to one question. You'd also run the risk of the jury not paying attention and relying on out-of-context portions of testimony rather than the entirety of the case. And, it's more than technology. The transcript has to be edited by multiple people. Stenographers are great, but they're not perfect. And they're infinitely better than dictation software. Getting a certified transcript during trial can be done, but it's prohibitively expensive. For a sixteen day trial, you'd be approaching a hundred thousand dollars.
Yeah that’s ridiculous I’m not even allowed to order a one hour depo transcript unless I need it for trial or to prove up fraud bc they are a few hundred dollars each. An over two week trial would be absolutely absurd. Plus you either have a transcriptionist that works all day and every night putting it together or you have multiple transcriptionist which will lead to all kinds of errors.
I figured that, I’m just genuinely curious if there is any obligation to use that training. The way I understand things, once the suspect is taken into custody, the LEO is responsible for their health.
I’m mentally preparing myself for acquittal, but manslaughter seems the most likely. Murder 3 is a possibility, but that’s hopeful. Extremely unlikely he gets murder 2. Again, prepare yourself for him getting off with nothing.
The way he looked around and stayed on his neck well after he was unconscious seems premeditated. If he gets manslaughter or walks I won’t even be mad at the destruction to follow
reading tea leaves on deliberation time seems silly to me they might agree on two counts then spend three days deliberating the third, who knows
I live in Minneapolis. I can't describe the tension. I love this town even though we've got loads to improve on. I just hope riots stay in white collar downtown instead of burning the neighborhoods in the most need again.
this is true. but this has never stopped me from trying to read something into how long deliberations are taking in any of my trials.
If the jury is doing their job they're going back through all the evidence in detail. At least that's what I made everyone do when I was foreman. They expected us to take an hour or two. We took two days.
The jury was out about forty minutes the hardest I've ever been hit. It was a liability case, and they decided it on the second vote and then just all agreed to give what the plaintiff's lawyer asked them to give.
and my post lays out how even with potentially multiple guilty verdicts the deliberations could drag out
Generally speaking, quick verdicts are good for the defense. Exceptions happen, such as wes tegg posted about and I had it happen to me once, too. But typically when they come back fast it means exoneration and they’ve already decided they’re not convinced by the prosecution/plaintiff.
Outside of the calm before a tornado or a hurricane coming in I can't imagine how on edge that city is.
Correct but they have to pair that video with the charges and spend time discussing whether the specific elements of the charges have been met. This is an important trial they’re going to take their time.
