There's a cost beyond compensation if Watson sits all year and they force him to pay them for doing so. The PR hit for that would be incredible both in the media and with players around the league. And the worst thing they can do is trade him sometime between after the draft and before the trade deadline (which I think they would almost have to do if he sits) because then they won't know where the picks they're getting will be. I don't think there's a scenario where things will line up like this where NYJ and MIA not only pick top 3 and would want him, but a) there are QBs worth picking in those spots to replace Watson; and b) both those teams have multiple 1s this year, and NYJ has multiple 1s next year. They fucked this up as bad as you can with a superstar QB, but they did it in a window where the stars aligned for them to maximize the return. I don't think you can count on that happening again next year even if teams still value him the same.
