xur is a dude that shows up friday to sunday or later now (can't recall if he stays until weekly reset on tuesday or not). he sells exotic weapons and armor and some legacy gear as well. he shows up randomly around the solar system and usually you go to a web site some user created like hoss linked for an easy way to find him. prices can be steep if you're new but if you wanna start your exotic collection, that's the place to go.

highly recommend getting necessary materials to eventually buy dead man's tale scout rifle from him (page 2 of his inventory). i love that gun. he sells it weekly now so no real rush.

My plan is to just knock out witch campaign this weekend.

 

you should also pick up the Xenology quest from him whenever you can. It requires some combo of 21 strike completions, crucible wins, and/or gambit wins. Basically just let it accumulate in the background as you play and once done you can turn it in to Xur whenever he's back again for an exotic cipher. You can use the exotic cipher to get an exotic from Xur or you can use it along with some other materials you may not have yet (Ascendant Shards) to pick an exotic weapon from that kiosk in the tower.

But I try to always have that going in the background because it's eventually a free exotic from just playing the game.

 

I’ve only been using my currency to buy bounties. Anything else worth spending it on while leveling?

 

You should be checking the gunsmith and Ada 1 daily for their mod inventory. Unfortunately getting older mods is one of the worst grinds for new players so better start as soon as possible.

Does Discord work on Xbox for cross play? I know they have an app but at some point I read it only showed what game you were playing in the Discord UI and didn’t actually let you use it for voice.

 

It doesn't work for voice.

The easiest way is for the person on PC to have the Xbox and PlayStation apps and use those for chat.

 

Ah, didn’t realize you could do that. You get game audio in the background using that?

 

Download the Quarrel app on your Xbox. It's a third party client for Discord and supports Discord voice chat.

It's not as great as using Xbox party chat though as the app will randomly kick you from chat and/or crash like every 10-20 minutes if you don't back out of your game and pull up/interact with the app for a second.

 

I’m on PC, so I was thinking more from the other direction. I haven’t done any higher level cross play because of the voice chat situation between PC and consoles.

But if the Xbox and PlayStation apps support voice chat on PC, that would work, obviously.

Google seems pretty definitive the pc xbox app works for voice chat with console, but much less so on the PlayStation app, which somehow doesn’t surprise me.

 

I have a buddy on PC and he uses the PlayStation app. No idea how many hoops there are with it though.

 

Anyone want to do the dungeon or raid? I got freed up for the night with the wife and kid crashing early.
Edit: or Preservation. I’ve never done that either and I know it’s a weekly pinnacle

All good, I fucked around in some vanguards for an hour and went to bed. Worked all day yesterday so am not on track of my 1560 goal.

 

What should I spend my exotic cipher on, or should I bank it for now?

 

No point in saving it because you can get one each weekend from Xur. You looking for a PvE or PvP weapon?

 

Witherhoard if you have a shard.

 

What are your options?

 

He’s a new player, so everything in the kiosk and Xur.

 

Yeah this is honestly probably the best bet. That thing is so useful.

 

Plus get that awful catalyst step started. 400 of anything is too much.

 

Outbreak Prime or Witherhoard. OP is my main gun so it’s always gonna have a special spot for me. Witherhoard is really great if you learn how to use it.

 

PvE

 

Yeah, it’s broken. During the season it was released it wasn’t nearly as bad with the season pass perks accelerating it, but they haven’t adjusted it since. And the catalyst itself in incredible, giving auto loading to it. Makes it a viable weapon in almost any activity.

 

So Xur's choices are:

• Exotic Engram
• Crimson (hand cannon)
• Gemini Jester (legs)
• Aeon Safe (gauntlets)
• Vesper of Radius (chest)

I can afford to purchase all of them, I have 241 Legendary Shards.

 

Bought a Crimson. Everyone needs a good hand cannon.

 

You should use it at the exotic/legendary kiosk at the tower. That’s where you can purchase previous seasonal pass & raid exotics (though you’ll also need other currencies like ascendant shards & Spoils)

 

Crimson is a fine weapon and definitely a good buy that can help you immediately. I’m indifferent to those armor pieces and wouldn’t spend the legendary shards in them when they’ll eventually drop for you with enough play.

 

I would pass on all of those for now.

Especially because I think all 3 are mediocre rolls.
