Stafford is very good in play action, even though the Lions had a 100 yard rusher 11 times in his 165 games.

Rams love to run the boot to the TE or WR crossing

Even before the trade I thought taking a QB this year didn't first with their rebuild timeline. Seems even moreso now. Plus having two 1sts next draft has to put them in the best position to trade up to take the guy they want

If they like someone available at 7, they have to take them. No guarantee they'll be in that spot again. This gives them an excuse to not feel like they have to, though, which is fine.

The Lions are now basically in the same spot as Atlanta at 4. If they love someone there, they'll take them and sit them behind Ryan for a year. If not, they do something else and kick the can down the road.

Yea this doesn't change qb draft this for me at all. Just Goff is the stop gap instead of Taylor, or Jameis or someone like that.

But the guys they have are better judges of QB than me so it depends what they like

You've pointed out how many holes this roster has and with taking future picks over what I'd assume were 1st this year, they made this trade fully planning on not winning in 2021. Yeah, if they really like a guy at 7, take him but they don't need to now and shouldn't use up assets to move up either

I'm not a fan of Goff, but this team is still capable of winning 3-7 games with him and picking similar spots in future years.

You want to talk timelines, QB take longer to adjust to the league. Taking a qb this year I think puts them in a better time line with when all these other picks going to develop. You wait 2 years to take a QB, give him a couple years to develop and all these other guys we picked in top rounds are coming off their rookie deals. And I don't think a new Coach and GM going to create a timeline where they won't be competitive for 4 years...

If they love a QB and can move up to get him reasonably, I still think it makes sense to do so.

We were 0-16 in 2008. We had a much worse talent base then than we do now, outside of Calvin. We made the playoffs in 2011 after picking Stafford in 09 and him missing 2/3 of the games in 09 and 10. They aren't going to compete for anything in 21 or 22, in all likelihood, but picking a QB in the top 7 this year doesn't stop us from being able to add enough talent from being able to win in 23 if we pick the right QB.

At least it's not at home and can't be on Thanksgiving. Also, I'm hoping we're bad enough that the NFL will just let us deal with it on a late Sunday afternoon over making us eat that beating on a Sunday or Monday night.

Yeah, it just dawned on me after I typed that there it's not just us playing Stafford, but Goff playing there. Only reason they won't do it is if they don't want to waste a prime time Rams game against us because that division is going to be really good.

This a WFT writer for The Athletic. Not sure what it means, because literally any other Stafford trade gets the Lions more immediate help.

So people who say wft offer is better think Goff contract is worth a first? So they think 2021 1st and 3rd is better than offer we got because pick is this year? That's what it sounds like

I think any analysis of the deal is going to suffer from the disconnect that I'm 100% certain that Holmes/Campbell think more of Goff than most others do. Holmes was part of the group that drafted him and has seen him be good, and if you're Campbell you almost certainly prefer to open 2021 with Goff than with the crew of misfits on the FA market. I'm not saying they view Goff as a good asset, but I don't think they look at him nearly as negatively as others do.

Goff is basically an opportunity cost question in terms of what his salary being on the books means compared to having a bit more flexibility in FA with a lower priced veteran QB who doesn't have Goff's (limited) upside. I think you can argue for either side of that.

If Goff plays well you have your Qb of the future if not you will have opportunities to draft yours with the capital you picked up

The more I think about it the more I dont think they take a qb this year now. They may legitimately see how Goff does next year and then take a QB in 2022 or 2023. Maybe lack of tape on guys this year is making them hesitant too so they go ahead and take a gamble on Goff

I think Goff could be a good starter in Detroit.

Lynn will build a strong rushing attack and Goff will have some weapons if they can keep Golladay.

There are some talented wr at top of draft and we need wr, but don't think I'd want to go wr at 7

There aren’t many opportunities to get a franchise QB in the NFL, so if you think you can get one now, you do it.

My guess is we take a QB this season, tag Golladay and give Goff the reigns for as long as he can keep the job. At that point we reassess next offseason.

I’d rather give Goff a shot this year and draft next year. Don’t think he’s the answer, but who knows what next year brings and you could always trade up with one of the extra first you have.

    The Athletic grade

    Trade grade (Lions): A
These are truly strange times when we are giving the Lions an A for a trade, and it doesn’t even seem remotely controversial. Once Detroit decided that it was time to move on from Stafford, its goal was to maximize compensation. And two first-round picks (even if they don’t kick in until 2022) plus a third-rounder is a nice haul.

Obviously, taking on Goff’s contract is part of the reason why they were able to ask for so much. But let’s be clear: Goff is not a complete disaster. According to TruMedia’s Expected Points Added (EPA) model, Goff has performed like the 20th-best quarterback over the last three seasons. The Lions get him on what is essentially a four-year deal worth $27 million per season and two years guaranteed. That’s not cheap, and no one would sign Goff to that contract if he were a free agent this offseason. But Teddy Bridgewater signed with the Carolina Panthers for $21 million per season last offseason. The point is that pretty much all starting quarterbacks who aren’t on rookie contracts are going to be expensive.

The Lions can make Goff their bridge quarterback for 2022 and 2023, and he can provide competency. If he surprises and plays well in whatever system they implement, great. They have him under contract for four seasons. But the Lions are not tied to Goff. They can draft a quarterback seventh overall this year if they want. And if the rookie beats Goff out in 2021, no big deal. They’ll have a really expensive backup, but they’ll also have a starter on a rookie deal. They could also start Goff and have the rookie sit for a year. If the Lions want to move up for a quarterback, they now have additional resources to do so. If they want to wait until 2022, that works too. They’ll have two first-round picks.

The point is Detroit has optionality. Having Goff’s contract on their books is not going to kill them. And they were able to pocket a pair of first-round picks. They did well in this trade by any objective measure.

I think the emergence of Josh Allen is making Lance seem more appealing. Wouldn't *hate* taking him at 7, but definitely don't want to trade up for him, and I think I'd prefer defense/WR and roll the dice with Goff and QB down the line. This decision will define the Holmes/Campbell era, so fingers crossed they know what they're doing and go the right direction.

The QB class isn’t great next year, and there is no guarantee we will be picking in top 10 again. If a guy we have graded highly is available, then yes take one.

I understand the rationale of waiting, but there are other factors involved too.

then you trade up next year with your extra pick. We are picking the fourth rated QB in this years draft already at 7. No one knows about the QB class for next year at this point anyway. This past fall was a cluster fuck with Covid.

this roster has like 4 NFL starters under contract for next year, again I'm not worried about getting a top 10 pick. Goff without talent around him is likely to be a disaster...and if he shows that he isn't we won't need the QB right away anyway!

If we don’t go QB, curious which direction we go at #7.

OL - Slater / Sewell. We have a hole at RT, and can eventually slide to LT if Decker moves on or declines

WR - Chase or Smith. Immediate need at WR, but can probably find value later in draft.

TE - Pitts . Him and Honk would be Gronk and Aaron Hernandez 2.0

    DL - Payne, Rousseau

I think Parsons is out of the picture with his troubled past. And I’m kidding on the TE part. I’m sure Pitts would have been option if we had a hole at TE.

Selfishly, I want a WR. Having an elite #1 in today's NFL is huge and instantly makes the team more enjoyable to watch. Also, if we take another top 10 TE I might jump off the Ambassador Bridge

The other thing is I don’t get the worry around having Goff’s money on the books through 2022. One, it will keep us out of going nuts in FA, and two, outside of Ragnow, what young players do we have that need new deals before we can cut loose Goff?

It's a solid trade for us. Wouldn't give it an 'A' personally but it has that potential *if* the Rams somehow stink. I'd have preferred to take a deal with a team at 8, 9, or 12 of this years draft. If the Rams are as good as everyone expects, it's two late firsts and a third for us. Still good assets, but I'm not sure it maxes out potential draft capital. I'd also rather start Daniel next year and suck than have Goff on the roster.

So you draft a QB at 7 if you like him, let him watch behind Goff next year, then trade Goff for whatever you can get for him. If Goff is decent you can trade him easily. If he's not, cut him. Do not make plans based around the idea that Goff might be your starting QB in 2022 or, god forbid, 2023.

You have multiple first rounders the next 2 years to jumpstart the rebuild behind Lance or whomever they can draft.
