It Quinn takes Amani Oruwariye in the 2nd and Jahlani Tavai in the 5th, it probably seems like a better draft.
Kind of similar to last year when the Walker pick was really weird in round 3, and then we ended up getting Crosby in the 5th after some had him as high as the second round.
Stafford needs to play a lot better this year, but the offense went into the tank when they basically lost Kerryon, Tate and Jones at the same time. At that point, the talent was abysmal at the skill positions and no offense was going to work unless Stafford became Brady. I don't like the depth at RB or WR at the moment, but I think the offense is decent if they stay relatively healthy.
If Hockenson is as good as they think, and he adjusts quickly, I think the WR depth benefits. But I have no idea who is backing up Marvin and Kenny on the outside, and RB is scary, especially when considering Kerryon's injury history.
I've thought RB is a big need all offseason. I don't think CJ Anderson and Zenner are enough. I think Hockenson (if he can do it right away, as you said) helps Kerryon and Riddick in the passing game as much or more than the WRs, too. Riddick was smothered underneath last year because we had no threat at TE and LBs could just sit on him.
It's funny when you get to this part of the draft to hear analysts talk about prospects and say completely different things. Louis Riddick compared Oruwariye to Greedy and said his coverage skills are top 2 rounds but doesn't want any part of being physical or playing the run. Daniel Jeremiah says he has some issues with athleticism in coverage, but is physical and will play the run.
So what you’re saying is nobody knows shit. At least there is film on this guy. Must not have cameras in Hawaii
I agree on Riddick, although I think part of the problem there was usage. He was rarely in the game where he wasn't getting the ball. Maybe with good TEs his usage will improve as well as how much attention he gets.
Another weird thing about our draft is we got a better pick (#186) to move back 6 spots in round 4 than we gave up (#204) to move up 7 spots in round 3.
I like the Johnson pick. I doubt Fulgham ever plays, but that's why it's the 6th round. He's a warm body on the outside.
Congrats on Bryant. Lots of value with him because of that pec injury. Does a good job setting the edge but is smart and rarely was caught out of position
If there's a Theo replacement, it's Kerryon being a 3 down back this year, IMO. Johnson replacing Riddick on the roster would probably be as a 3rd or 4th RB who plays on all the special teams (and possibly returns kicks) and they think that's a more valuable use of that roster spot. I know very little about him, but I don't think he'd jump in as the 3rd down back this year.
They signed a Oday Aboushi as a possible stop gap for a year. Also have Kenny Wiggins from last year Tyrell Crosby possibly moving there from tackle. They have options. Crosby is probably the only hope of any of them being more than below average.
I would like it if Aboushi steps up. Not drafting a tackle makes me think they don't want to move Crosby. There are veteran guards still available in FA, too, so I'm not worried aboutit. RGs are a dime a dozen.
I'm down on Ty Johnson because he's from Maryland and Mel Kiper didn't do a pick breakdown of him. I'm assuming that means he's not good because Mel always homers it up for Maryland players.
So here are the guys I would consider roster locks headed into the season: QB (1): Stafford RB (1): K. Johnson WR (2): Golladay, Jones TE (2): Hockenson, James OT (3): Decker, Wagner, Crosby OG (1): Ragnow C (1): Glasgow DE (4): Flowers, Hand, Okarawa, Bryant DT (2): Harrison, Robinson LB (3): Davis, Kennard, Tavai DB (4): Slay, Coleman, Agnew, Oruwkariye S (3): Diggs, Walker, Harris ST (2): Prater, Muhlbach So that’s 29 of 53 spots locked up. Guys I would think are near locks are: RB: T. Johnson WR: Amendola OG: Aboushi, Wiggins LB: C. Jones S: T. Wilson Anyone else I could easily see not making the team
I don't think T. Johnson is a near lock, and I don't see any way Amendola gets cut if he's healthy going into the season.
Both are fair. We also gave a 145k guarantee to UDFA OT from SDSU. Apparently he’s a great athlete but the film is lacking.
