Chris Burke at The Athletic (which everyone should have by now) with a comprehensive list of candidates.

The Lions will coach one of the squads at this year’s Senior Bowl — that news was confirmed via press release Thursday afternoon. But it’s increasingly uncertain who actually will be alongside Matt Patricia when the staff arrives in Mobile, Ala., later this month.

After Patricia fired six assistants on New Year’s Eve, defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni and offensive line coach Jeff Davidson each announced, via the team, that they would be taking a leave of absence from coaching.

Assuming Detroit maintains the same roles on its staff as in ’19, that’s now eight openings to be filled this offseason. Ideally, most or all of them — certainly, the DC role — will be locked in before Senior Bowl practices begin on Jan. 21.

“Coach Pasqualoni notified me this week that he will be stepping away from the Lions to be closer to his family,” Patricia said, in a statement. “Coach P is one of the best men I’ve ever been around, on both personal and professional levels. I owe him so much and I’m grateful of the impact he had on our players, coaches and support staff. He will continue to be a great sounding board for me as a coach, father and leader. I wish him and his family well as they begin the new year together.”

Pasqualoni’s decision saved Patricia and the organization from having to make their own on the 70-year-old coach, who helped launch Patricia’s coaching career back at Syracuse. At the start of December, however, Pasqualoni told reporters he’d like to keep at it for awhile, though his explanation for why was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

“My daughter is going to graduate; she’s the youngest, she’s graduating this year,” he said. “So we have four years to get her through (college). My No. 2 guy is a sophomore at Boston College … so, you know what that costs? Got to get him through school, plus he has to get a master’s degree. My oldest son is a closed-stick (lacrosse) defender at Bryant University, so he’s on a five-year program there. So, I hope I’m coaching for a long time.”

If he does continue, it will be elsewhere.

The Lions’ defense improved against the run over the second half of the season, but that did little to offset all the other issues on that side of the ball. Detroit coughed up 30 or more points five times this season, finishing 0-5 in those games; when allowing at least 27 points, the Lions were 0-6-1. All told, the Lions allowed 6,405 yards, the second-highest total in franchise history, behind the winless 2008 club (6,470).

Of course, this is — and will remain — Patricia’s scheme, so the Lions have a bit of a tap dance to do now with Pasqualoni, linebackers coach Al Golden and defensive backs coach Brian Stewart all departing.

Who might (help) call the shots on defense next season? A closer look at some candidates:

Steve Gregory (current role: Lions defensive assistant): Given the other holes on the defensive staff now, a bump from defensive assistant to DBs coach certainly makes sense for Gregory, a former NFL safety. An internal promotion all the way up to the defensive coordinator job doesn’t really fall in line with the Lions’ ongoing housecleaning.

But Gregory — a Pasqualoni recruit at Syracuse — was a Patriot in 2012-13, starting 23 games at safety for Patricia. (Random trivia: Gregory recovered Mark Sanchez’s “Butt Fumble.”)

He’s a potential up-and-comer now in the coaching ranks, although it might be too early for him to take over a defense. Unless, of course, Patricia plans to keep most of those responsibility on his plate, in which case placing someone like Gregory as his defensive No. 2 could make sense. After Patricia took the Detroit job in 2018 and Brian Flores headed to Miami last offseason, Bill Belichick moved forward without an official defensive coordinator on staff.

Jerod Mayo (current role: Patriots inside linebackers coach): A name you’re likely to hear tossed out a bunch in the coming weeks. Mayo spent his entire playing career (2008-15) within the Patricia/Belichick system and he’s renowned for his intense work ethic — the demanding “Patriot Way” (and/or the Detroit version) of it isn’t for everyone, but Mayo already knows what it takes.

“The attitude and work ethic and love for football he brought was special,” Belichick said at the 2016 league meetings, after Mayo announced his retirement. “He was very special.”

The unknown is the same as with Gregory: the coaching experience isn’t there yet. This season is Mayo’s first back on the sideline post-retirement, and he’s never called plays.

Something else to consider as we connect the dots, though: Mayo’s brother, Deron, is the Patriots’ assistant strength and conditioning coach. The Lions have multiple vacancies in that department after firing Harold Nash and Rodney Hill on Tuesday.

Brendan Daly (current role: Chiefs defensive line coach): When he made his first appearance for the Kansas City media, in May, Daly said he’d been hammering home to his players the need to eliminate bad football and play sound, fundamental football. That’s straight out of the Matt Patricia bible.

Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator, said that “a close friend in the business” had hyped Daly’s role in New England. “He said this a couple years ago that he felt like he saw a complete difference in the way they played defense in New England,” Spagnuolo said, via The Athletic’s Nate Taylor. “He felt Brendan had a lot to do with that. I thought it was a great observation.”

Daly, 44, has gone the high school-to-college-to NFL route as an assistant coach. This is his first season as the Chiefs’ D-line coach, but he held that same position for the Patriots from 2015-18; he was a New England defensive assistant in ’14.

Josh Boyer (current role: Dolphins cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator): Brian Flores took Boyer with him when he moved from New England to Miami as head coach. Boyer’s duties (at least in title) have expanded with the Dolphins — he was the Patriots’ cornerbacks coach from 2012-18, and the DBs coach before that.

The Dolphins’ secondary isn’t exactly where one might go to look for obvious DC candidates — Miami ranked 28th in net yards per attempt allowed and last in TDs. But, FitzMagic aside, keep in mind that was a roster built to bottom out this season.

Boyer does have one year of defensive coordinator experience to his credit, back in 2005 at South Dakota School of Mines, which a) does exist and b) boasts the moniker “Hardrockers.”

John Butler (current role: Bills defensive backs coach): Indirect Patriots ties here — Butler was Bill O’Brien’s defensive coordinator at Penn State in 2013, and he was a DBs coach for O’Brien’s Texans from 2014-17, before being fired; O’Brien served on Belichick’s staff from 2007-11.

Hard to argue with what Buffalo’s pass defense has done this year. The Bills allowed just 6.2 yards per pass (third best in the NFL) and picked off 14 passes (No. 8 ranking). Butler could be one of the first branches to spring out from the Sean McDermott coaching tree.

Andre Carter (current role: Jets defensive line coach): Carter notched 10.0 sacks for the Patriots in 2011, then closed his career there with a nine-game stint in 2013. He just wrapped his third season back in the NFL, as a coach — two with Miami, now one with the Jets.

Sitting No. 71 all-time with 80.5 career sacks, Carter long held a reputation for being a studious, intelligent study as a pass rusher. Those are qualities that translate well into the coaching world.

Bret Bielema (current role: Patriots defensive line coach): After Bielema spent the 2018 season as a “consultant to the head coach,” reports surfaced that he might replace the departing Flores as New England’s defensive coordinator or might be a possibility to serve as Flores’ own DC, down in Miami. Neither came to fruition — the Patriots are without a defensive coordinator now and Steve Belichick, Bill’s son, has been handed increased responsibility.

Between Bielema’s prior experience and the Patriots’ defensive performance this year, though, it seems almost inevitable that the ex-Wisconsin/Arkansas head coach gets to call plays soon.

Would the Lions be interested? Bielema definitely would bring an interesting pedigree to the position.

Wade Phillips (current role: Rams defensive coordinator): With his contract expiring and his days in L.A. seemingly numbered, would the 72-year-old mastermind give it one more go round? His history speaks for itself — he and Belichick have gone at it time and again, including at last season’s Super Bowl.

A hire like this would require Patricia to cede a lot more control over his defense than he had to with Pasqualoni in the coordinator position. That’s probably asking too much of Detroit’s head coach, even off a season in which the Lions fell apart defensively.

Tim Walton (current role: Jaguars secondary and defensive backs coach): Can’t imagine NFL organizations are clamoring to get at the Jaguars’ staff right now, but Walton — the Lions’ DBs coach from 2009-12 — has been a coordinator at both the college (Miami, Memphis) and pro (Rams) levels.

Before this stop in Jacksonville, he also was with the Giants from 2015-18, in the same roles he now holds. At least until this season, Bob Quinn and Patricia had an affinity for the Giants’ system, as evidenced by a string of New York-to-Detroit additions like Romeo Okwara and Damon Harrison.

Shane Bowen (current role: Titans outside linebackers coach)/Tyrone McKenzie (current role: Titans inside linebackers coach): A lot of parallels to be found in the approaches taken by Patricia and Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel. Those Patriots stick together — Vrabel played for New England from 2001-08, then parlayed time on O’Brien’s staff into the Titans gig.

McKenzie, 34, played in the NFL from 2009-13; Bowen’s playing career ended at Georgia Tech. Both arrived in Tennessee as part of Vrabel’s initial staff, two years ago. If the Lions want to make an outside hire, without straying too far from the nest, then the Titans’ and Dolphins’ staffs would be natural targets.

DeMeco Ryans (current role: 49ers linebackers coach): Be it Steve Gregory or Jerod Mayo or Andre Carter or Ryans, there are ample choices out there should the Lions pivot from Pasqualoni to a rising former NFL player-turned-coach. Ryans is in his third season leading the 49ers’ linebackers, and he’s drawn rave reviews.

Another element at play with this suggestion: It’s rather standard practice during a coordinator hunt to find a successful defense, then chase a guy behind the guy — i.e., a position coach. The 49ers finished the regular season tied for first in yards per play allowed (4.7) and eighth in scoring defense. D-line coach Kris Kocurek deserves kudos for his help in those efforts, but the Lions squeezed him out when Patricia arrived. Other options out of San Francisco include OLBs coach Johnny Holland and DBs coach Joe Woods.

Andre Patterson (current position: Vikings defensive line coach): It’d be tough to swing an intra-division coup, and tougher still considering Patterson goes back 30 years with Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer (he was on Zimmer’s staff at Weber State in 1988). Plus, with Minnesota coordinator George Edwards reportedly in the final year of his contract, Patterson might be in line for a promotion next year.

All of those are reasons to at least put in a call. The odds are very low here, but maybe Patterson is ready to take the reins again. He’s been a DC twice, on the college level: Western Michigan in 1989, then UTEP from 2010-12.

Kris Richard (current role: Cowboys defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator): This might be a little too on the nose, nabbing a former Seahawks coordinator not long after he’d been fired by Pete Carroll — that’s how Detroit landed Darrell Bevell. But Richard was one of the architects of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” secondary, then spent three seasons (2015-17) as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Right now, he’s … well, I dunno what is happening in Dallas; Richard might be fired again by the time you read this post. He did interview for the Giants’ vacant head-coaching job.

He’d bring an experienced play-calling background to Detroit, though. The Seahawks’ Cover-1/Cover-3-heavy scheme wouldn’t mirror Patricia’s to a T, but it would ask a lot of similar things of the cornerbacks on the outside and of the safeties interchanging over the middle.

John Pagano (current role: Texans outside linebackers coach): He’s twice been a defensive coordinator before, for the Chargers (2012-16) and then the Raiders (2017). His now two-year stop as a position coach in Houston also clicks into the aforementioned O’Brien-to-Belichick pipeline.

Jim Leonhard (current role: Wisconsin defensive coordinator): Brett Venables of Clemson is the first call any DC-needy pro team should make, but he’s in one of college football’s most stable and lucrative assistant jobs. A more realistic option if Detroit dips into the college ranks is Leonhard, in part because he had a lengthy NFL career as a player.

“He’s a genius,” Wisconsin safety Eric Burrell told The Athletic’s Jesse Temple this week. “That’s the word I’m going to use to describe him. He puts the guys in the best positions possible.”

NFL teams frequently consider college head coaches when jobs come open, but for whatever reason that interest has not often translated to coordinators. It seems like the next logical step. More and more elements of college offenses have made their way up the ladder, so it would make sense to start looking for the minds already tasked with stopping them.

Leonhard probably has a head-coaching gig somewhere in his future, but a stop with the Lions might allow that breakthrough to occur in the NFL, rather than the NCAA.

Tua going pro is massive for us. Anyone who wants him will likely have to go to 3 to ensure they land him.

What we should do - trade back netting a big return for a wanted QB.

What is Likely - Picking Okaduh which curses the young playmaker with future hamstring issues.

What Quinn is spending all his time on trying to make happen - Trade Stafford, Sign Brady

He's already being projected at pick 5 or 6 so it's not a stretch to think a team will panic and jump up to grab him. Guess it will all depend on how his medicals check out during the draft processes

Seems like a less than exciting start to these new hires. We're going to need to make a ton of hires over the next 10 or so days leading up to the Senior Bowl. Especially with it sounding like Sean Ryan is going to leave as QB coach to be Rhule's OC in Carolina.

The positive here is that Bevell already got to work with Fraley. It seemed like Bevell and Davidson weren’t on the same page, so this should help.

The other way to look at it would be maybe Davidson really did step down more than get fired if the first hire they make was to keep his assistant.

That, or they fired Davidson because they didn't want to lose Fraley.

Plenty of people shit all over the Patricia hiring at the time. His defense that last season in New England was a disaster. Caldwell wasn't dog shit, he was solidly average, which isn't good enough but significantly better than what we have now.

Never. I'm not dumping Stafford because of recent injuries so we can draft a QB who gets hurt every time he gets touched.

If we traded Stafford this year, he would cost $32M against the cap (he'll count $21M against the cap if we keep him). If we redshirted Tua and traded Stafford after 2020, Stafford would count $19M in dead money against the cap in 2021. That means we wouldn't benefit from the cap relief of a young QB, anyway.
