As a UM/Lions fan, I think there are a decent amount of parallels with Stafford and Harbaugh. It's not their fault they took over situations with all kinds of problems. They've both been good, for the most part, but never great. And after a while of not fixing the problems they inherited you have to be honest and wonder how likely it is they're ever a part of the solution after so many years of coming up short. At some point that's a weight that everyone else has to carry that becomes too much, and starting over fresh with someone else seems like the best scenario for everyone.
If Stafford used social media like his wife, we could add another Harbaugh parallel (at least until Jim stopped tweeting a few years ago).
Even if we get up to 5, if the top 3 QB and Sewell go 1-4 not sure where we go at 5. Id guess one of the WR
If we pick 7, I could see Jacksonville, Jets and Atlanta going QB, Bengals and Dolphins going OT and Eagles going WR. We could have our pick of top defensive talent, or take #4 Qb or #2 WR (or #1 cb or te)
Saleh has a Zoom interview with the Falcons tomorrow per Shanahan. I’m curious how are schedule shakes out.
If I can put my DeToxRox hat on and try to project what this means, what if they intentionally scheduled him for later in the week so they could potentially interview 2-3 other candidates, knowing that they might end up offering the job to Saleh if they like him the best on Thursday/Friday?
I assume all these initial interviews for everyone will be on Zoom. No reason to risk travel when it’s not warranted. Once you hear of guys making plans to visit facilities, you’ll know it’s serious. I do think we interview Saleh near the end, since he’s probably the guy we covet, and allow a comparison of all the other candidates. It seems simple enough to then get Saleh on a flight Friday, with a deal hammered out by Saturday.
I don't think anyone has any clue on a time frame on that. It sure sounds like we're going to interview the entire NFL for that job before this is over.
Yeah it seems like we will get a coach before a GM. I’m cool with that. It’s harder to find a great coach than a great GM. Get the guy you believe in, and hire people to help shape his vision. Also, the names we are interviewing make me think that we have done a good job explaining Spielman’s role within the organization moving forward.
The Saleh stuff is interesting because he's one of the few NFL candidates who can be hired this week. Of the NFL guys, there's him and then people like Marvin Lewis and Jim Caldwell. Just about all the other names people are mentioning (Daboll, Bieniemy, Martindale, Smith) can interview via Zoom (I think), but can't be hired until they're done or make the Super Bowl. Definitely seems like college guys are more in play this year than normal, but who the hell knows with that stuff.
Two weeks ago I lost in my FF semi-final because Hurts scored 40 points against me. Seeing him be this shitty the last two weeks is very annoying.
So just trying to bring all the info/rumors together to this point... Coach Interviews: Lewis (last week) Bieniemy (today) Darrell Bevell (Tuesday) Robert Saleh (Thursday) Arthur Smith (next week) Dan Campbell (next week) GM Interviews: In-house guys with no shot (December) Louis Riddick (December) Rick Smith (December) Scott Pioli (December) Thomas Dimitroff (December) Terry Fontenot (Tuesday) George Paton (Wednesday) Brad Holmes (Wednesday) Jeff Ireland (Friday) Am I missing anyone to this point?
That covers it. I am not sure how many more GM we will interview, but I expect we will see if we can land one with Schneider. Otherwise, I think that one might be whittled down to 2-3 finalists by the weekend.
The Schneider this is still so far out of left field that I don't know what to make of it. Seems like there's some disagreement on whether we could actually do that, as well. Florio says we would have to give Seattle compensation. I don't believe anything Florio says, but at the very least it seems like that rule is up for interpretation in this instance. Also, Schneider was asked about it yesterday before their game and, unless I'm missing part of the quote, didn't exactly shut down the idea that it could happen or that he'd be listen.
If we brought in Bienemy as HC I wouldn't be surprised if we drafted Trey Lance. I'm still not pretending to know enough about him but he seems like someone who would fit that offense potentially
It still annoys me that Wood does these pressers. He said he doesn't anticipate them adding to the list of names already in place for either the GM or coach job, and they're open to hiring either position first. I think that means they will have interviewed ever GM candidate by Friday of this week when they interview Jeff Ireland, and all but one of them will be done by tomorrow. That seems like an underwhelming group of coaches to interview outside of Saleh to me, although they technically don't have to put anything into the league office to interview college guys or others who aren't in the league, so there might be a name or two (like Pat Fitzgerald or Matt Campbell) not currently being reported.
Birkett is stumping for Pat Fitzgerald and David Shaw and saying both would be home run hires. I think that's a lot of hyperbole there, but Shaw is one of those people who is likeable enough that I would talk myself into it until he punted on 4th and 3 from the opponent's 40 yard line for the third time.
I'm not in love with any of these tandems. I'm hoping he purposefully chose Dimitroff for Saleh because if he picked a more fun name he knows that would win. He also said he thinks Lewis would bring Hue Jackson as his OC. I feel like that should disqualify Lewis as a candidate.
I hope the press conference to announce our new hires are the last times I hear Wood speak. He does this franchise no favors whenever he opens his mouth.
I was reading the transcript of some of his quotes and just getting mad. It wasn't like he was saying anything egregious, but he has zero business ever talking about how close/far away the team is to winning, or who the QB is, or anything that has anything to do with football. They put him in that role and tell everyone he has nothing to do with the football side, yet he's frequently doing interviews talking about the football side of the organization. Whether it matters or not whenever they hire the new GM (hopefully not), it will almost make me mad.
