I would be willing to bet that, if Dumars could do that draft over again, Melo would be third on their list behind Wade and Bosh. I don't think they ever considered anyone besides Darko in that draft, but I believe that if Darko didn't exist they would have picked Bosh.
Kind of wondering the same thing. I know they had conversations with Shane Battier and Brent Barry a few years back when they hired Stefanski, and Chauncey is kind of in that same group (though those other two have FO experience elsewhere). The question is really what kind of power the new GM would have. Unless the new hire would immediately have personnel control, seems like it would have to be a younger guy because the more qualified guys aren't taking that job.
Also, it seems like Arn is ultimately making the call here, but maybe I’m reading too much into that.
Yeah, which is part of why this is weird to me. I wonder if any of those three (Malik Rose, Pat Garrity or Gregg Polinsky) get a shot at this. Garrity is a holdover from the SVG era so I would guess he's least likely. The others were Stefanski hires. I'm confused as to what the roles of Tellem and Stefanski really are in terms of who outranks the other. Seems like we've all expected Tellem to take over more basketball stuff since he got here, but he's ended up being Gores' right hand man in terms of the business more than on the basketball side.
As far as Tellem goes, I get the sense that he’s probably swaying Gores opinion on whatever the future of the team should be.
Seems like it would be a large jump for Miller to go from an assistant coach in college to a GM in the NBA. That one seems kind of out there. Detroit isn't the kind of place where you hire a GM because he's connected to players because those players are never going to choose to play there.
The only name I've seen that I would reject out of hand is Dell Demps. Hard pass on that one. Seems like Edwards is the most plugged in guy at this point, so I trust his list over guys like Rod Beard (who mainly just brought up names from two years ago). From Edwards' list, I think I'm most intrigued by Troy Weaver from OKC. Seems like that's the kind of background we should be looking at. Mark Hughes from LAC is also somewhat interesting. He also brought up Justin Zanik from Utah, who would probably be the top candidate but I don't know how or why he'd come here considering he's already Utah's GM.
Does it really matter who we get? Seems like our only chance of being successful is winning the lottery ( top. 3 ) or that French guy turns into a stud. I don’t see us landing any decent free agents with our cap room.

And this doesn't even include Darko and I'm trying not to include guys that no one would have drafted in Pistons spots, but these are guys who went right after they picked 2010 : Pistons took- Monroe, Players drafted in next 3 picks - Paul George and Heyward 2011 : Pistons took - Knight, Players drafted in next 3 picks - Kemba and Klay. Kawhi also went 7 picks later 2012 : Pistons took Drummomd which was fine but also took Middleton round 2 and gave up on him before he became a real solid player 2013 : Pistons took - KCP, McCollum went 2 picks later, Giannis 7 picks later 2014 : Pistons took Dinwiddie round 2, and again dumped him before becoming a real solid player 2015 : Pistons took - Stanley Johnson, Players taken in next 5 picks - Myles Turner and Devin Booker 2016 : Pistons took - Henry Ellenson, Next 2 picks Malik Beasley (who looks to be breaking out after trade) and Caris LaVert 2017 : Pistons took - Kennard, next 2 picks were Donovan Mitchell and Bam Adabayo. 2018 : No first rd pick 2019 : I guess TBD with Sekou

I remember being very happy with... - Knight over Walker, Klay and Kawhi - Drummond falling to us at 8 or 9 - KCP over CJ (although I would have been fine with CJ) and Giannis Oops. I think I tried to talk myself into Stanley and Kennard, but I wouldn't have picked either (although I wasn't as mad about Stanley over Winslow as some). Ellenson seemed like a "Fuck it, YOLO" kind of pick that was kind of reasonable at the time. The weird thing is, it's not like they drafted a ton of absolute busts. They drafted a bunch of decent players who didn't develop into more than that, which is why they've been the same team for the last 12 years, essentially, filled with decent players but no building blocks.
Feels like we’ve been better drafting in the second round than the first. Problem is we trade those guys away like a half of a season before they turn into good players.
I would have expected him to be someone Stefanski was with in Brooklyn when I saw the name, but he just got there last year. He was in Atlanta 7 years before that. I've been expecting Hughes as the hire for most of the process. Hoping we can land Weaver, but that's probably not up to us. Peterson seems like a "Stefanski gets an extension of he's hired" kind of guy.
That seems like a very good hire. Also seems likely that this means Stefanski won't be around much longer. I think Edwards said previously he's got one year left on his deal. I really doubt Weaver would have come here if he wasn't immediately running the show.
