Pretty incredible just how terribly mediocre this franchise has been over the last decade that this is the highest pick since 2010...
If we are gonna get lucky in the draft, let’s wait for 2021 or 2022. This is the worst draft class since the Anthony Bennett draft.
In the range we ended up, I think we end up with one of Hayes, Avdija or Vassell unless one of the PGs (Kira Lewis, Cole Anthony or maybe even Tyrell Terry) behind that group rises up in that range.
Not much going on for someone working in college athletics when there are no athletics, so I'm watching YouTube highlights of prospects this morning. I think I'm all in on Killian Hayes and would be very pleased with that pick. If he gets past four (Chicago) he should get to us at seven, hopefully. If he can improve his 3-point shot, I think he's at least an above average starting PG in the league because it seems like he's got everything else.
If the Bulls take Hayes wouldn’t that mean that 3 of their last 4 #1s were on PG, with the 4th being Denzel Valentine, who at this point is probably a tall slow PG that is always injured?
They've got top 10 picks at PF (Markkanen) and C (Carter). LaVine is their best player at the 2, and Otto Porter is making a lot of money still as a 3/4 type. White was their pick last year. The Bulls could go any direction, really. They have a new GM, so none of those former picks are safe in that regard. The lack of top talent at the top makes it less predictable because I'm going to assume every team is just going to pick the guy they like most over even thinking about need. My current prediction in the top four would be that Haliburton and Ball go 2 and 4 in either order, but I have no clue and at this point the draft might not even happen until December.
I’m very interested in Hayes and Avdija or Toppin if we could move Blake. In the long run whoever is picked after our pick will end up All-NBA and our pick will end up with injury probs so idk
Driving home tonight listening to the BS draft lottery pod where they literally just skip any analysis of the pistons because our roster isn’t worth discussing. Walk in the door to see Donovan Mitchell putting up 50 in the playoffs.
Here’s what my quick googling turned up For the greater half of this decade, the Los Angeles Lakers have had success finding contributors late in the draft such as Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr., Ivica Zubac and, most recently, Kyle Kuzma. On Saturday, it was reported that the man credited with finding a handful of those players, Ryan West—son of Jerry West—was leaving the team after 10 years.
The draft has me thinking about the pistons a lot lately and uhhh...we have the worst roster and asset combo in the league, huh? Cases could be made for a few other teams, but I’m pretty sure ours is the worst. Probably not breaking news or anything. Just didn’t realize how bad it was relative to the rest of the league until now.
Only decent thing going for us is the cap sheet moving forward (it's essentially only Blake right now, and that's only two more years). Unfortunately, the cap is about to shrink due to lost revenue from COVID so we're not going to benefit from that except for maybe being able to resign Wood for cheaper than we could have otherwise.
I've read all these stories on Gores and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to think about it. It's an awful look, but I'm not sure what the NBA is supposed to do about it. They can't take his team away for that. At least they shouldn't, even if that business is disgusting.
There was a rumor a few weeks back that we are expected to be one of the teams on Jerami Grant, which would make me want to cry.
MG2 any draft news out there? I read the pistonpowered blog and they have a Blake Griffin / Bam Adebayo + trade proposal so I’m concerned about my sources
I saw that, too, and decided I don't need to ever visit that site again. Haven't really seen much, other than several suggestions from writers elsewhere that we really like Haliburton, as well as some Hayes stuff. Seems very likely we take one of those two if they are there (and I'm guessing we order them Haliburton over Hayes). I could see us really liking Okongwu (and I do, too), but everyone thinks we're resigning Wood so that makes it less likely, IMO. I think Toppin is a wild card. A lot of people really like him but I'm not a big fan.
James Edward’s is really pushing this idea of trading back with Boston for all three of their firsts. It doesn’t seem like a good idea to me, but maybe I’m insane?
I think he's just looking for content. He wrote a few weeks back that he wouldn't trade back in this draft. I liked his piece today, though. I think it's an interesting concept depending on who is available at 7. If Haliburton and Hayes are gone, I'd probably do it, but then I don't know who Boston would be moving up to get.
Maybe I'm not reading his stuff close enough because I guess I never thought it was like that. The Athletic draft guru whose name I'm not remembering (Vencie, maybe?) wrote a puff piece about Hampton a week or two ago saying he's completely changed his shot with Mike Miller. I like Hampton, but he's not a PG and he's a bit small for a wing so I'm not entirely sure where the fit is here. Seems like he kind of a rich man's Bruce Brown.
He mentioned Lewis, Hampton and Precious as options at 14, and the list there could be huge. Bey, Nesmith and Anthony are three more interesting potential targets there, and I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that one of Okoro or Vassell is there.
Boston is going to have to unload at least one of those picks and I can’t imagine a strong market for that
Boston is in an interesting spot. They would benefit a lot more from 1 player in the top 7 than 3 players between picks 14-30. But I think they're also already over the tax heading into the offseason, and they're going to want to get below it if they can. Those late picks could be enough to get someone to take on salary to accomplish that. Detroit took on the extra year of Snell last year from Milwaukee to get the 30th pick in that kind of trade, and I think teams like Atlanta, NY and us might do the same this year, too.
I think that's the tough part for Boston, because I don't think they would give up a first rounder to move Hayward unless the owner made them. Stevens loves him. I would be somewhat surprised if they even gave him away for nothing without a pick. They don't have a ton of depth and I think their ideal scenario is to use him to add multiple bench pieces while potentially saving $10m or so to get under the tax. I don't think Detroit is really suited for that because anyone they would want we would want to keep. If they're willing to just give him away, I'd be in on that.
The most likely Hayward/Detroit deal would probably be a Wood sign and trade. Boston tried to trade for him at the deadline this year, and they need size. Every sign points to Detroit wanting to keep Wood (and him wanting to stick around), but Hayward plus a pick or young player is better than losing him for nothing if he decided to leave.
They’re in a hard situation with Kemba and Heyward being 50% of the cap, being 30, and being useless in the playoffs. I don’t know how they can keep both and hold on to Brown and Tatum. But I just want Boston to end up giving us pics and I read too many fan blogs
