This deal is fine, although it's weird to me that Stan is already calling Morris his starting 3 without ever seeing him (or anyone else on the roster) play his system.

Bullock has been a buy low candidate I've been interested in, and maybe he could break out here. If he can do enough to earn minutes, he could be the best shooter on the roster.

    PG - Jackson, Jennings, Dinwiddie
    SG - Caldwell-Pope, Meeks, Hilliard
SF - Morris, Johnson, Granger, Bullock, Martin
    PF - Ilyasova, Tolliver, Miller
    C - Drummond, Baynes

I'm guessing we resign Joel Anthony (hopefully for 1 year) to give a rim-protecting option backing up Drummond. That leaves us with 17 guys for 15 spots. Ellis is saying Granger is likely to be waived. Miller's deal isn't guaranteed, but I could see us keeping him if Stan wants Morris mostly at the 3. One of Bullock and Martin also likely gets the boot out of camp.

I'm guessing Dinwiddie and Hilliard are both decent bets to start the season in Grand Rapids.

Martin would already be gone if he didn't have a player option, right? I thought they weren't happy with the production

Martin opted in at the league minimum (around $1m). Only reason they would cut someone like Granger over Martin would be that they don't want to keep someone accomplished who might be pissed about PT over a career 12th man.

I don't mind the trade but I would have rather seen Stanley play more minutes than have Morris starting.

Morris is a three? Also, which Morris twin is this? Does it matter?

    I'm so confused.

    MG2 we're apparently giving Aron Baynes 3 yrs $20mil.

    Thoughts?

He seems like a reasonably skilled guy who isn't athletic. He gets dunked on by everyone (Blake Griffin eviscerated him several times in the playoffs, and Marcus Morris actually did the same in the regular season). He can't block shots, and I have no idea if he can play defense in other ways.

Last year in SA, he averaged 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game as a bench player while shooting 58% from the floor in those games. His per 36 minutes numbers add up to 15 points and 10 rebounds, which is solid for a back up big. The problem is he shot so much better last year than previous years, and I don't know if that was a one-year fluke or if he just got better opportunities and more shots around the rim. It's probably a little bit of both.

Stan's usually pretty good with bigs, and I'm assuming we'll add Joel Anthony, too. If we get the Baynes from last year, I don't think the deal is bad. If we get the guy who couldn't get off the bench in SA for 2 years before that, it's a pretty bad deal.

This is the Marcus Morris dunk on Baynes I wrote about. The clip actually starts with Baynes dunking on the other twin.

Pistons are playing in their summer league opener on NBATV in about half an hour. Dinwiddie, Johnson and Hilliard all seem likely to play a lot over the next week.

Quincy Miller broke his nose on Wednesday and is out 4-6 weeks. Sucks for the kid since Drummond was hyping his offseason progress quite a bit. Definitely hurt his chance to make the team.

It's easier to cut him because his deal is non-guaranteed, but I wouldn't be shocked if we kept him over Martin or Bullock if it comes down to it and Stan sees more potential in him. Especially if the two sides work out an arrangement where Miller is willing to play in GR a fair amount this season.

Dinwiddie looks terrible. Have to wonder if his roster spot will be in jeopardy considering we have been speaking wth Lucas recently.

Johnson is physically an animal. He should acclimate well to that side of the game.

I don't think he's in jeopardy of getting cut. It makes very little sense to do so, IMO. I do think performances like this make it less likely they try to salary dump Brandon Jennings once he proves he's back from injury, though.

I was impressed that Johnson didn't look out of control. KCP and a lot of young guys we've brought in look like maniacs going 100 mph in summer league, and it's translated to the regular season a lot of times. Johnson looked under control and didn't have any TOs. He did commit 5 fouls, though, and I'm guessing that's going to be an issue for him for a while as he adjusts.

Johnson had another good game. 24 and 9 on 10-14 shooting. Only 2 TOs and he's +24 in the two games so far. Think he's going to have to figure out how to move without the ball when a play isn't called for him to do so, but I like pretty much everything else I've seen from him so far.

Dinwiddie had another pretty bad game. 6 more TOs and struggled just to bring the ball up the court against pressure and get the team into the offense.

I'm really interested to see what Marcus Morris is like coming over here. I'm guessing there will be a presser to announce the deal. Seems weird that he hasn't been quoted once since the move, and hasn't tweeted or anything like that. He and his brother are crazy close (and kind of just crazy, too). Almost all the guys Stan has brought over have been great team guys, and this seems like it could be the first real test on that front.

Was hoping it would come in closer to the $12m he was offered by OKC last year, but always figured this was the likely scenario. If they're right about him, this is fine. If they're wrong about him, this isn't going to end well. He'll put up #s either way because playing PG for Stan seems like a pretty good gig.

Not sure what these other pieces might be, but I'm hopeful they don't give Joel Anthony any more than the minimum.

Detroit will see if they can add more pieces in FA/trade with the room and keep Reggie J cap hold before signing. Some room left.

I don't have a huge problem with most of the moves Stan has made in terms of player acquisitions. They've generally been pretty solid, IMO.

His lack of patience is a real issue that needs to be addressed soon, though. In the last 12+ months, they:

    - overpaid Jodie Meeks because they wanted someone to commit early
    - gave 2 yr guaranteed deals to Gray and Martin last year for minimum dollars in the first day or two (not something terrible, but still completely unnecessary)
    - cut Josh Smith when they could have waited longer to see if something developed with the higher cap (debatable, but still a lack of patience)
    - signed Baynes for almost $7m a year when there was a glut of better players on the market who ended up signing for similar or less $
    - traded for Morris because he decided he had to have a SF who can start over a rookie
    - paid Jackson max money without anyone bidding because he apparently didn't want to wait things out over the next month or so to see if they could sign him for less

Most of those players are decent enough that they've brought in. They've cost themselves a fair amount of money on the cap in the process of making those moves, though. At some point, Stan's going to have to figure that out or someone in the org is going to have to become better at advising him of that stuff before it leaves us without any leverage in any negotiation.

Which side of this coin wins out is basically going to tell the story about how Jackson's contract is viewed and how good we are in the next couple years.

    Jackson's #s as a Piston (27 gms):

    17.6 PPG
    6.8-15.6 FG-FGA per game (43.6%)
    3.8 FTA per game
    9.2 APG
    4.7 RPG

Jackson's #s during the 11 game stretch without Monroe in late March/early April (team went 7-4 during that stretch):

    20.9 PPG
    7.9-16.0 FG-FGA per game (49.6%)
    4.8 FTA per game
    10.8 APG
    5.7 RPG

    Drummond's total #s last season:

    13.8 PPG
    6.0-11.7 FG-FGA per game (51.4%)
    13.5 RPG

Drummond's #s during the 11 game stretch without Monroe in late March/early April:

    16.9 PPG
    7.0-13.0 FG-FGA per game (53.8%)
    14.8 RPG

Some of those #s could be small sample flukes, but I'm guessing Stan views it as the blue print for the foundation he's building. That stretch without Monroe featured blowout losses to Philly and Charlotte, but also had wins over Memphis, Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta and Boston.

I wonder how much the Monroe situation played into their reluctance to play this out with Jackson. I can see how watching an asset like that walk for nothing after taking the QO last year might make them a little more hesitant to play hardball with another guy they want to keep.

Seems like they had to pay him whatever with Jennings a total question mark. If Reggie sucks the contact won't be as penal after the cap bumps and they might be able to move him.
