I just hope he can somehow match the greatness that previous shooting guru John Beilein helped Killian and the rest of our stars reach

Also seems like the Tellems sticking around. Organization needed to completely clean house, and doesn't appear to have done so. So expecting similar results from this "regime"

Firing Weaver was needed, but keeping Tellem and Monty really dulls the effects of the first move. Terrible offseason, terrible owner, terrible franchise

It's Edwards so take it with a grain of salt, but in his article on the new shooting coach he mentions Salaun. It's the first time I seen his name brought up in connection with the pick. Seems like Buzelis becoming less likely to be available and Salaun would the swing for the fences pick at that spot. Still don't believe his Williams hype, it's this draft's Bouknight for Edwards.

Someone like the G League Ignite’s Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland or French forward Tidjane Salaun could greatly benefit from Vinson’s presence. Cody Williams’ release could use some speeding up, even though he shot 41 percent from 3 at Colorado.

Salaun has been mentioned as having a workout with the Pistons scheduled a week or two ago. That's a massive reach for him but he's been getting buzz in the 8-12 range for 2-3 weeks.

Whoever we pick will suck, and whoever we pass on won’t. It’s science.

Can't really call anyone a "massive reach" in a draft like this. If Risacher/Star/Buzelis are gone by their pick, what's their options at that point? If they want to swing for the fences it's pretty much Salaun or Castle, and not seeing how he fits alongside Cade. Otherwise its a middling pick on a player who's upside is likely your 4th or 5th best player. Or hope that someone wants to trade up to get Clingan.

All I can base my thoughts on with Salaun is scouting reports, and the scouting reports are basically that he's got prototype size for a wing, is new-ish to basketball, is currently a mediocre shooter but has improved a lot in a short time to get there, and looks terrible when he tries to do literally anything else.

Personally, I would rather draft someone like Holland or Castle and hope they learn to shoot than take Salaun and hope he improves a bunch as a shooter while also learning how to play basketball. But teams know much better than me if those scouting reports are true.

should they also bring back Killian?

The options in this draft are as follows: Do you want to draft someone to try to maximize the players currently on the roster? Or do you want to take someone with a chance to be the best player in this draft? Because the player pool you're picking from varies significantly depending on how you choose to answer that question.

And I don't know if there is a right/wrong answer to that. That's just kind of the choice they have to make.

I'm cautiously optimistic that Cade, Ivey, Ausar, and Duren can still be valuable pieces. If thats Ivey leading the second unit with Sasser I think there is potential there. Knecht seems like the type of guy who can fit into any lineup because of his shooting and his length/athleticism.

On offense he would be a great fit, I just don't know how you get past that defense. This team already struggles and Cade/Knecht backcourt would likely be the worst backcourt in the leage by a mile.

IMO we should stop trying to play Cade in the backcourt. He’s a wing

Wasn't the whole point of Langdon coming in that he was going to be the one who made that call? Or are they just trying to give Langdon cover for it or something like that because Monty is well respected by coaches and media?

Tom has to write the check, so the decision is ultimately Tom’s. Langdon obviously wanted it, or it wouldn’t have happened. It seems like Trajan recommended it a couple weeks ago, and Tom wasn’t really on board until yesterday or today.

The Pistons beat writers don’t know how to properly express that.

List of names from Edwards is rather uninspiring. Surprised Kenny Atkinson isn't on it, but he probably isn't interested...

    James Borrego
Where did Borrego spend last season as an assistant coach? Where did Langdon get hired from? The answer to both questions is New Orleans.

Borrego is most known for his four-year run as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets (2018-22), where he was tasked with a rebuilding situation that would eventually be headlined by LaMelo Ball. Borrego is considered one of the better offensive minds in the league without a head coaching job. During his last season with the Hornets, Charlotte posted a 40-plus-win season for the first time in six years, and the team was ranked eighth in offense during the regular season. Coming from the Gregg Popovich coaching tree, Borrego, despite only being 46 years old, has had a coaching role in the NBA since 2003.

    Sean Sweeney
A name familiar around these parts, Sweeney is currently a lead assistant and head of the defense for the Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks. Sweeney was on Dwane Casey’s staff his first three years in Detroit, was with Jason Kidd in Brooklyn and was critical in the development of Giannis Antetokounmpo during his time as an assistant coach in Milwaukee.

    Johnny Bryant
The 38-year-old Bryant has been the associate head coach of the New York Knicks since 2020, joining head coach Tom Thibodeau immediately upon his arrival in New York. Before that, Bryant was in Utah, where he worked as a player development staffer before being promoted to assistant coach in 2014. Bryant is currently under consideration for the Cavaliers’ opening as well.

    Micah Nori
Another name familiar to Pistons fans, Nori is the lead assistant for Chris Finch in Minnesota, even filling in for Finch walking the sideline after the latter injured his knee in an awkward sideline collision during a first-round playoff series against the Suns. Nori, too, worked on Casey’s staff during his first three seasons in Detroit. Nori has been in the NBA working as a coach since 2009 with the likes the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets in addition to Detroit and Minnesota.

    Jerome Allen
Yet another name familiar to Pistons fans, Allen, too, was an assistant under Casey in Detroit. The true inventor of the “Shammgod” crossover, Allen has also been an assistant coach for the Celtics and was the head coach at the University of Pennsylvania, his alma mater, from 2010-15. Allen was recently named an assistant coach under Dave Joerger for the 2024 USA AmeriCup Qualifying Team.

    Chris Quinn
Quinn, one of the NBA’s rising coaches, has been interviewing for head coaching jobs over the last few years, including the Pistons’ opening last year before Gores aggressively pursued Williams. He has worked under Erik Spoelstra in Miami since 2014 and even filled in for him as head coach on a few occasions in 2022. The former Notre Dame point guard won’t go much longer without being a head coach in the NBA.

    Will Weaver
Most recently an assistant coach with the Brooklyn Nets, Weaver won the 2019 G League Coach of the Year award with the Long Island Nets, who were overseen by Langdon, then the assistant general manager of Brooklyn. Weaver, similarly to Borrego, is known as an offensive-minded coach who was very creative in his time running the show in both the G League and as head coach of National Basketball League’s Sydney Kings in Australia. He’s been coaching in the NBA in some capacity since 2013, with other stops in Philadelphia and Houston. Weaver has also been in consideration for head coaching jobs across the NBA, like in Oklahoma City, where he was one of two finalists in 2020.

I’m fine with any coach committed to developing the young players. Now that we hopefully don’t have a front office focused on collecting draft busts as reclamation projects.

Now we hire a real coach. The new shooting coach turns Ausar into Ron artest with a jump shot. Ivey into Wade with a three pointer. Duran learns how and when to jump on defense and turns into Shawn kemp or something. Cade becomes 6”6 Steve Nash. We just miss the playoffs but get lottery luck for Flagg. We are so back

Clayton can defend though. I wouldn’t hate it if we are trading Duren for players that compliment Cade for once.

I'm okay with Claxton if they trade Duren. He does a lot of similar stuff but is a legitimately good/really good defender (which Duren is not). Only problem is playing Claxton and Ausar together would be a problem, but you can work around that by bringing Ausar off the bench.

If they're not trading Duren it would be really stupid.

My opinion on the Pistons going forward is I think we are doomed with Gores as the owner but we have Cade and it’s obvious we are going to give him a max extension. I’ll at least respect any move we make that works towards complimenting him on the court. I don’t know how far that will get us but at least it’s a strategy.

Is your best option to package some of ausar, stew and duren and pick(s)? for Ingram (not all, but some mix), and run Cade, Ivey, Fontecchio, Ingram and Claxton? Maybe ivey improves with a new coach.

Realistically how good is that team anyway? Idk, team is in a rough spot, and I'd guess some contenders would like Ingram too so not sure how likely that deal would be.

If we traded for someone like Ingram, I think Ivey would need to be moved just because I don't think they would ever be able to develop both he and Cade with another high usage guy like Ingram on the roster. It would be better for everyone involved to just put more of a 3/D type guy in that role.

If they signed Claxton, I think that would make Stewart more valuable because he would have more of a defined role. His shooting allows you to mix/match certain line-ups as a back-up 4/5 who plays 20-25 minutes a night, and you basically manage the minutes where all of his minutes are played with Ausar.

If they traded for Ingram, for example, I think you give up Ivey instead of Stewart. And while I'm not as high on Sheppard as some, putting him next to Cade makes a lot more sense in that scenario than drafting him onto a team with Ivey and Cade both on it and no rim protector at the 5.
