I hardly follow the NBA, but when did Conley become a 30MM/year player that you mortgage your team’s future and trade your whole team for?
Why wouldn't we want to resign him? Seems like the kind of thing a team with not shooting should want to do.
I'm not sure the two things are mutually exclusive. This gives us some room under the tax line and an extra 2nd round pick.
Rumors 5 hours ago were that we were pushing for Conley and were up there with Utah as a favorite to get him. Whether we get him or not, we've clearly been working towards that goal. I doubt winning two straight the last two nights has suddenly made us decide to be sellers. I still don't see why Memphis would do that deal with us unless we basically didn't protect next year's 1st rounder (and shoot me now if we do that), but I have a really hard time believing we're suddenly going to start selling off pieces like we should be. This deal tells me we either like Svi (for reasons I don't understand) or are trying to create room and add a pick to do something in the next 2 days.
I am no expert in the NBA but I do not see how this would help pave the way for a Conley/other deal. What am I missing? Does a late 2nd round pick in 2021 move the needle even the slightest in what we could viably offer? No. Bullock was on $2.5M, this new dude is on $1.5M. I cannot imagine the salary diff makes much room to make another deal either.
I’ve seen conflicting reports on this. Not sure what is true. Some are saying Memphis asked this of Toronto.
Saw a rumor earlier that Memphis is holding out for two #1s. Good for them if they can get it, but I don't see even us going that far. I think that could make sense for Utah, though. He's a perfect fit there.
I don't think we should be trading a 1st and Kennard for Conley. At the same time, they need to be honest with themselves about what they think Kennard is and can be for them. It can't be "that's too much because it will look bad" if they're not going to trade him. With no more Bullock, Kennard needs to be starting, and he needs to be given some rope to see what he can do if they're not willing to trade him. No more Brown in the starting line-up. No more Galloway off the bench in front of him. Give him extended run and see what you have, or trade him now while he still has some value.
Our current wings: Bruce Brown Luke Kennard Langston Galloway Khyri Thomas Glenn Robinson III Svi Mykhailiuk They could use another wing, although I would prefer it was someone who can play the 3 instead of someone who is going to eat into Kennard's minutes.
