The Pistons' new front office, centered around Stefanski, will look closely at hiring a rising front-office executive in a general manager-type role, league sources said. Brooklyn Nets assistant general manager Trajan Langdon met with Detroit officials to discuss such a high-level role and will remain a serious candidate, league sources said. Television analyst Brent Barry, a 14-year NBA veteran and two-time champion, is a front-runner to land in a complementary role in the Pistons' front office. Popular ex-Pistons player Tayshaun Prince -- who is completing his first year in the Memphis front office -- will be a strong candidate to join Stefanski in Detroit too, league sources said.
Does this mean there won't be a team President? I'm assuming Stefanski and Tellem will be essentially combining in that role, regardless of what their titles suggest.
We really need to hire a young guy as GM. Langdon or Battier works for me in this power structure. I don’t like hiring Casey, but whatever. I would rather have a young coach but I get why we aren’t likely taking that route.
I'm not sure what the power structure will be, but it's kind of terrifying to me that he's quoted saying they're searching for a GM and coach simultaneously. On the one hand, they describe a job title that's more of an assistant to the owner, but he's apparently going to hire the coach? If he's essentially the team president who has final say, it still wouldn't make sense to me to not have your GM have a significant say in who the coach will be. Otherwise, what's the point?
I think Casey is a good coach, and we're basically stuck with a roster that's old that will try to compete for the playoffs. I'm not sure what young HCs you could drop into that situation and feel great about it. I'm sure there are some, but I'm not sure they're any better than Casey would be.
I am just biased against retread coaches in sports. With this roster Casey makes the most sense. I just want something new. Like a Michael Curry or John Kuester.
After thinking about this hire, I think the most likely scenario is we'll try to hire someone like Battier or Barry as what amounts to a President apprentice, with Stefanski having his hands on the wheel to start while the younger guy with no experience gets his legs underneath him. Maybe even hire Langdon as GM underneath them. I'm not sure how that would work (seems kind of risky), but it seems pretty clear we're trying to hire multiple front office guys beyond just a GM, and I don't see anyone with experience in the front office wanting to come in and possibly deal with Stefanski in whatever role he's in. The question is whether those younger guys would want that opportunity. I've read that Battier could end up running the Heat one day whenever Riley steps down, but who knows when that will happen? I also don't want Tayshaun in the front office. He might be really good, but I refuse to forgive him and Rip for quitting on several coaches.
Dear lord. Kenny Smith is an idiot. I still don't understand why we're not hiring a GM/President/whatever before hiring a coach. What is the rush?
I feel like this list of candidates was created to make me happy if/when we ultimately hire Dwane Casey. I'm kind of intrigued by Juwan because I think Spoelstra is a top 3-5 coach in the league and he's played or coached with him for a decade, but it's hard to look at this roster and think a former player with zero HC experience like Howard or Smith is coming in here and taking advantage of Blake/Drummond in the frontcourt unless there's an offensive guru coming with them to run the show.
I don’t think Casey will come here. Seems like he will be better served to take a year off to recharge and then pick a better situation for himself. I prefer a first time coach just because but yeah, it’s probably not ending well.
Casey is 61 years old. I get why he would wait and it's certainly possible, but how many chances is he going to get moving forward? I guess his ideal scenario would be sit out and then take over mid-season when Ty Lue gets fired in Cleveland or something like that.
I agree but it’s probably not appealing for a guy just coaching Toronto to envision his next job being at a place that wants to interview him without a GM being in place.
This is about the only way I would watch. Make it an all access show with live mics on every player and coach. I think Gores would go for this as well. Shaq talking shit to Drummond at half. Charles trying to fight every opposing player. Fuck, i love it
I did some research and talked myself into Juwan. But that could also have happened because I'm terrified of Kenny Smith getting the job.
