In fairness, the report says "in the last few weeks", which means that probably happened well before we did any of this. As insane as Weaver appears to be, I'd be shocked if they made that move now even if Washington wanted to.
David Aldridge ranked everyone’s offseason. He has us 22. The Skinny: It was easy, and many did, to laugh as the Pistons brought in center after center through the draft and the early stages of free agency. And it may well wind up that Weaver wildly overpaid for Plumlee, and whiffed in adding gobs of dead money to his team’s cap and seemingly trading every second-round pick until Wonder Woman 9: Seriously, I like Gal Gadot as Much as the Next Man, But, Really? comes out in 2038. (Also: pouring one out for Trevor Ariza, Dewayne Dedmon and Tony Bradley, who were each in the Motor City for a few minutes after being acquired before being sent on their way.) But, damn, I like Weaver blowing up the going-nowhere squad he inherited, and blowing it up real good, like they used to do on Farm Film Report on SCTV, and believing in guys like Plumlee, whose 2.4 screen assists per game last season were among the most for non-starting centers in the league. Will it work? I have no idea. But I like a GM who does what he/she thinks is right, rather than pay fealty to the conventional wisdom that the keyboard warriors in my business often demand.
Seems absurd that camp starts this week already, and they'll be playing games in just over three weeks.
Looking at the Pistons' roster, it appears we still haven't officially signed Plumlee, Jackson or Okafor. McGruder and Zhaire Smith are both still on the roster, as well, and both have been rumored to be waive/stretch candidates. I'm not sure what the hold up is there for any of that stuff. They aren't going to back out of those deals or anything. Just kind of weird they aren't official yet.
We apparently traded Isaiah Roby and two #2s for him in 2019. Does anyone know if we own any of our 2s within the next 20 years?
Edwards wrote in a Q&A before the draft he thought the Pistons might never sign Sirvydis, which I thought was weird.
My guess is he heard that Weaver isn't a fan. I don't really get the issue. He didn't play a ton of minutes in the Euro League last year, but he can shoot (42% from 3 the last two years at a decent volume per minute). Give him a year in the G League, make him guard the best opposing players, tell him to shoot 10+ threes per game, and see what happens.
Yeah, why not try it out? Seems like the franchise wants to make the new G League team a huge part of the development process. Get as many bodies as possible.
ESPN's stat projection has us as the second-worst team in the league behind Cleveland (by 0.1 wins). Projected record of 24-48 with a 1% chance of making the playoffs. I actually think that 1% chance thing is too low depending on the health of Blake and whether we can move in a deal before the deadline.
Was talking to my dad the Sunday after all the moves and we agreed that, in spite of the fact we disagreed with a bunch of the moves, it was the most exciting/interesting stretch of being a Detroit sports fan in the last 5 years.
The Red Wings draft / FA was a lot more fun to me because it showed me that there seems to be one competent GM in town. Yzerman made a lot of moves too and turned over a good chunk of roster, but his moves actually made sense
Yeah but really Blake is going to play 90% of games and Derrick Rose is going to play 95% and we will squeak into the playoffs get the 16th pick and convey that to Houston as part of what we gave up to trade them Christian Wood
Some pretty good quotes if you want to believe in Hayes today. Several vets talking him up and Casey announcing him as the starter already.
I'm legitimately interested in what Blake looks like, at least to start the season. All the reports have been that he looks back to normal, but I don't think they would say otherwise if he wasn't. Also very intrigued by Hayes. I think he has to be considered the ROY favorite by default at this point unless Casey is only going to play him 15 minutes as a starter or something like that. We haven't had a legitimately interesting young player since Drummond, which is incredibly sad considering we've been drafting in the lottery the entire time.
My guess is the rotation to start the year looks something like Hayes Wright Grant Griffin Plumlee Rose Svi Bey Sekou Okafor/Stewart I don't really see where Jackson gets minutes on this team, but he feels like a wild card. I kind of want him or Bey to start at the 2 and just go full 80s mode in terms of size, but I think Casey will want to make sure Wright gets minutes. Ellington, McGruder, Sirvydis and Musa all seem unlikely to play at all, and we'll have to cut one of them by the end of the camp to get to 15.
We also have Anthony Lamb on the roster and he was 2 time player of the year in the AEC. We might be terrible but our G League team should be good
Lamb is on a 2-way deal, so doesn't count against our 15 available spots. Same with Saben Lee. Question is whether they actually have a G League season. Recent reports had us sitting out of a proposed G league bubble.
