That tripping penalty lmao
This has been awful hockey the last 5-7 minutes. Lucky af they’re still up 2.
DeToxRox it makes me want to cry to our boy free of Chiarot's shackles.
Walman came here with the potential to be a top six guy, but right now he’s a legit top four guy.
I think he's on a bit of a PDO bender, but some of it does seem sustainable.
I get very 1995-2009 Wings vibes watching that.
And then Erne gets the puck and it's all ruined
It's all Truman 's boys tonight so far.
Walman is an elite skater. Always frustrating he never seems to put it all together for more than an handful of games at a time.
Great win tonight.
Better to be lucky than good, I guess. Incredible clearance.
Fuck yeah Mo
Funny how Mo offense issues all of a sudden gone when he's not paired with Chariot
The commentators tonight talked about the split and how Chiarot has exploded. Um, look at the other guy.
Man, I love Walman but also, he’s a UFA on a cheap deal and will be sue a big raise. He might fetch a ridiculous price at the TDL if Yzerman goes that route.
In fact, I could see Yzerman trading guys like Bert and Walman and using those resources to also be a buyer. Will be fascinating to see what happens.
Also, I am becoming of the mind that Yzerman should be making a run at Lafreniere. I don’t know that the Rangers are looking to sell low on Laf, but that is a guy we should be trying to bring into town.
we can give them Larkin.
Two games in a row Vrana gets scratched.
Has to because of AHL veteran rule. Not as nefarious as it seems.
Oh it is but also Vrana is there for conditioning and hasn’t played the last two games. It’s entirely possible it’s injury related, but Simon could say that and to my knowledge that has yet to happen.
Also had a career high 22 mins TOI.
Wallinder also having one of the best 20 year old defensemen seasons in SHL history with 5+18=23 playing top minutes in all situations. 6’4” and an elite skater. I used to think that AlJo was the better prospect but now I think WW might be the perfect partner for Mo on the top pairing.
And still doesn’t turn 19 until April.
Chiarot has been out there for all three goals against, two of which he looked absolutely clueless.
Just bad hockey
Yikes. I don’t see how this team gets better any time soon, unless we win the lottery.
Our top 4 point scorers in GR are 26, 27, 28, and 30 years old. Cossa over Wallstedt looking like head scratcher right now.
To be fair, injuries caused us to call up Berggren.
I get what you're saying, but we don't really have any forward prospects(depending on you view Cross Hanas) in the AHL consistently rn to be upset that they're not producing. Elmer made the team out of camp and Berggren has been called up for awhile now. The main guys are overseas.
We desperately need another very good C to take the next step. That’s why I’m not against selling a bunch of our UFA (outside of Larkin) and then moving those assets to find a guy we can slot in as our 2C moving forward. Again, this is easier said than done, but it’s the only way to move this forward.
Then you can ease Kasper in next season on the wing, before moving him to C in 2024.
Rasmussen - Larkin - Raymond
Berggren - ??? - Perron
Kasper - Copp - Soderblom
??? - Veleno - Kubalik
Getting nothing out of Bertuzzi and Vrana is really fucking them, for this year at least.
We aren’t even on the same planet as an elite NHL team. The idea of this team playing meaningful playoff games (not just sneaking in as an 8th seed) in the next 2-3 years seems unlikely.
Games like today just show us how far away this team is from actually contending. Lot of tough roster decisions to make in the next 3 to 4 months here.
team has no superstars, and now Yzerman is forced with having to pay Larkin $9 million or more a year (definitely not worth it), or having him walk away for most likely nothing.
Imagine the makeup of this team if we won the lottery with the Jack Hughes draft.
Odd choice to choose the Mo Seider draft.
Getting relatively little out of the '18 draft is the one that's killing us. Zadina has been a bust, Veleno is probably a serviceable bottom six guy but far from the 2C we had hoped, Berggren is the guy we're hinging our hopes on now, and then none of the other picks amounted to anything.
In hindsight it looks like a mediocre draft which is really unfortunate because we had a ton of capital for that one, but if we needed to lucky in one of them and get a higher pick its that one. Dahlin, Svech, or Brady Tkachuk went 1,2,4 and then obviously Quinn Hughes is the one we could have had. He's a divisive player, but one you'd definitely rather have than Zadina at this point. In general we whiffed pretty fucking hard, not a ton of stars in that draft class but still.
F Filip Zadina. Drafted: Sixth
F Joe Veleno. Drafted: 30th
F Jonatan Berggren. Drafted: 33rd
D Jared McIsaac. Drafted: 36th
D Alec Regula. Drafted: 67th
D Seth Barton. Drafted: 81st
G Jesper Eliasson. Drafted: 84th
F Ryan O'Reilly. Drafted: 98th
G Victor Brattstrom. Drafted: 160th
F Otto Kivenmaki. Drafted: 191st
Hughes is probably top 10 player in the league. Every GM is taking him over Seider.
Lol absolutely not.
Team is so fucking bad. Steve is losing my goodwill.
I didn’t mind what Yzerman did this off-season because the team was already in purgatory. Ironically, basically all the moves he made worked with the obvious exception of Chiarot. The problem now is this season has exposed our lack of top end talent, and we with the issues surrounding Vrana and Bertuzzi, we are deeper into purgatory than before.
There are just two paths forward IMO:
1. Trade Larkin and actually rebuild
2. Trade for another building block, cost be damned
Waiting for the other young guys to come to Detroit and perform at a high level will take another 3-4 years, so I just don’t see another path forward.
I think the next four games will set the tone for whatever happens next, though. We play Vegas tomorrow, and then our three games after that are against PHI, SJ and MON. Getting less than 4 points from that stretch would be an issue.
I'm mostly just tilted and frustrated as a fan, I let myself believe this time that we might actually be on the path to good. Not this year, but soon. But it just seems to be more of the same and that what we have just isn't that great. I don't disagree that his moves basically panned out, but unfortunately that means they just raised the floor of a shitty team that isn't going anywhere. Bert and Vrana issues definitely fucked them, Chiarot scuttled half of Mo's season and just sucks in general, and Ned regressing substantially also had an impact.
We have some interesting vets that could be nice chips come the deadline if we bottom out. I've loved Perron, I kinda hope for his sake he gets on a contender. Could try to sell high on Walman. But I was hoping this year would be the end of the trying to sell off. No idea what to do with Larkin. He'll be 27 next July, he's been a great Wing in some dark seasons but has proven that he's not an elite guy.
The Larkin thing is where I struggle with the most, because he’s very good. Problem is, he wants to be paid as if he’s great, and I don’t think Detroit is at a place it can make that happen.
I trust Yzerman has a plan, but I’m not sure right now if the plan is correct. I think the next few weeks will give us a reasonable expectation of what the next steps look like at least.
Random minor league trade. Dude has 6 points in 39 games as a center in the AHL this year. With a name like Jesper Weatherby I can't say I'm surprised.
Pretty sure it was to clear out a Vet in GR so we don’t run into another situation where Vrana is taking time from another good AHL player. Also means Vrana is probably going to be in GR for some time.
That makes sense. We traded a 30 year old for a 22 year old.
