DeBrincat has a 9 mil QO and doesn’t appear to want to commit long term to the Sens. He’s a MI kid that allegedly has interest in returning. He’s going to cost assets and a long term deal, but he can score goals. People will say he wasn’t as good without Kane but he didn’t get utilized well in Ottawa. If we can get him for a package around multiple 2’s, I’d be all over it.
I wouldn’t do a first because DeBrincat in this draft because of his contract situation. Boston’s one next year isn’t a bad idea though.
I’ve been trying to narrow down in my head who Yzerman might target at 9 based on his history. This is what I have come up with: High Probability RHD - David Reinbacher C - Dalibor Dvorsky C - Nate Danielson RHD - Tom Wallander LHD - Dmitry Smiashev Rationale: every player listed has good size, can skate and has high compete/solid hockey IQ. Coin flip LW - Ryan Leonard LW - Samuel Honzek C - Oliver Moore LW - Colby Barlow LW - Danil But RW - Matthew Wood Rationale: Yzerman has shied away from the NTDP so that makes Leonard and Moore wildcards to me. The other players can score but have other issues (hockey sense, skating, etc) Unlikely but I wouldn’t be mad LD Axel Sandin-Pellika LW: Zach Benson LW: Gabe Perrault Rationale: ASP is a guy I love but he’s a small D. He has amazing offensive upside though. Yzerman doesn’t usually go after guys his size. Perrault has elite hockey sense but is small and a bad skater. Benson has compete issues. Based on the tea leaves, I assume Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Michkov, Smith, Reinbacher and Dvorsky are gone by 9. The eighth guy I am unsure about but I bet it’s a D. My current guess is we draft Wallander at 9 based on Yzerman’s history. And also a season of Mickey having to call the action with Willander and Wallander would be delightful.
Sens don’t have to trade him nor do they have to give him the $9M QO. They will likely take him to team arb and win a lower 1 year deal. If they go that route, it’s business. He wants to sulk about it, in the end he won’t be doing himself any favours. Last year was a write off for him. Sens lost Norris for the year, a top 2C. He played with a rookie who isn’t known for his passing skills. I would easily expect him to rebound. Personally I would have a hard time giving $8M plus to a player who isn’t a line driver.
I’m down if we are talking seconds. Undersized wingers that don’t drive their own production ain’t getting us over the finish line though.
Off-season stuff DRAFT WISHLIST #9 (Eliminating Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith and Michkov) 1. RW Ryan Leonard - Great shot, physical, high compete 2. C Dalibor Dvorsky - All around player, great compete, offensive upside 3. C Oliver Moore - Elite skater, Larkin clone 4. RD Sean Durzi - Kings have glut of D, 24 years old, all around solid player 2. RW Clayton Keller - High cost, but great deal, great age, elite offensive player 3. G Dan Vladar - Young, solid, Flames have logjam in net 6. C Nick Schmaltz - Underrated, on a solid deal, a true 2C with offense 7. C Mikael Granlund - Cap dump, should bring with him a great asset
Friedman did an insert into his latest pod speculating about Detroit wanting Konecney. I love his game and he would likely cost less than DeBrincat but he only has two more years left on his deal. 17 and one of the seconds would make a lot of sense. zeberdee am I nuts?
no, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he moved. I'm not sure what the comp would be, but that seems reasonable. looking back for comps, the person that jumps out is Bjorkstrand but that situation in Columbus was such a mess it's hard to really use it as a comparison.
Bob McKenzie’s ratings came out yesterday, and because they come from a poll of Scouts and NHL executives, they are usually predictive of which players will end up going in the top ten.
The Draft is Wednesday and Thursday, with FA opening Saturday. If Yzerman is going to make a trade, it’ll likely occur by Wednesday night, though a move involving any of our seconds coming Thursday morning wouldn’t be a shock. If this week Yzerman doesn’t acquire a piece that is somewhere in the 22-28 age range, it’s fair to call into question whatever the hell his plan is supposed to be. We are flush with prospects, picks and cap space. I don’t expect us to make the Playoffs next season, but we should be adding proven players to our core to gear up for the next several years. Beyond that, we can sign Seider to a new deal come Saturday. Getting him locked up for eight years would be massive for us (even though I think Mo would be foolish to commit to eight years this early in his career). Getting cost certainty with Seider will definitely help move things forward.
Here is a guess for what might be a semi realistic off season. I am sure none of this ends up happening. Trades: DET gets: Travis Konecny PHI gets: DET 2023 2nd, BOS 2024 1st, Filip Zadina and Shai Buium DET gets: Dan Vladar CGY gets: MIN 2023 4th, Red Savage Signings: Radko Gudas - 3X3.75 Max Paciorerry: 2X4 Austin Watson: 2X1.75 Mark Pysyk: 1X.850 Rasmussen - Larkin - Konecny Pacioretty - Copp - Raymond Perron - Kasper - Berggren Kubalik - Veleno - Fabbri Watson Walman - Seider Maata - Gudas Johansson - Chiarot Pysyk Osterle Husso Vladar It’s not a sexy team but it adds some toughness and the potential is there to add some actual firepower. Pacioretty is a massive gamble coming off two torn Achilles but he’s still an elite goal scorer when healthy. Giving him an extra year and letting him play with Raymond might work awesomely for everyone. Nothing done here impacts the team long term, but it helps move things forward.
Guy seems to be on the move a lot for a player who scored 40 goals twice before his 25th birthday. I guess he's a midget and nobody wants to pay him, but that's a bit of a red flag.
Chicago entered a rebuild and was going to have to pay him money. It never made sense to re-sign him. Ottawa traded for him thinking they could re-sign him but he doesn’t want to play in Canada.
Draft starts tomorrow and as of today this seems to be the current buzz: 1. CHI - Bedard 2. ANA - Fantilli 3. CBJ - Smith 4. SJ - Carlsson 5. MTL - Reinbacher 6. ARZ - Dvorsky 7. PHI - Michkov 8. WSH - Leonard 9. DET - No one knows My guess is we take Tom Willander.
If I’m SJ Michkov has to be the pick. Burn it down and acquire assets over the next 2 years while you wait for him to come over.
Take Moore or Thanks, Scott Wheeler. I like Moore or Wood in that situation, but Willander would probably be fine.
They took a chance. Mixed results so far but they can recover some assets for him. Not every American will want to live here I get that. Tkachuk and Norris both re upped for 8 years and Sanderson will as well shortly.
https://detroitsportsnation.com/rum...ngs/detroit-red-wings-news/06/26/2023/414891/ Rumor: Zadina + 17 + 2nd (or future 1st) Plus whatever it takes to sign him.
Seeing these rumors about a deal Yzerman is allegedly making makes me think it's not happening based on his history.
It wouldn’t shock me if it doesn’t happen. I mean the Hronek deal came out of nowhere. But the Sens are a team historically with a lot of leaks.
yeah looking forward to that 17th pick in the draft making his debut in 4 years and maybe turning into a .50 PPG winger
I just feel like the wings are giving up a little too much in that deal. Especially if it includes a 1 next year. I’m probably overvaluing Zadina, because he has new real value but one year closer to FA and we are giving up similar value to what they got him for
Detroit should be looking to compete for a WC spot next season, but you’re probably needing somewhere in the vicinity of 90-94 points to actually make it into the playoffs. That’s a seven win improvement over last year, though one found argue we outperformed our underlying numbers even getting 80 points. With that being the case, we cannot go into next year not adding multiple proven goal scorers. I get people being worried about DeBrincat, but as long as we don’t give up nine this season, we are going to be stocked with a ton of higher end prospects to hopefully develop a few legit players. Adding him and trying to sign someone like Pacioretty would change the dynamic for next season. If we can also add a guy like Pesce from Carolina to solidify the right side, now it’s not crazy to think we can actually make a run at at the playoffs. This is the Summer to use draft capital to add NHL players to our core. Just using the picks to draft more guys isn’t going to help us nearly as much after 9 and maybe 17.
It’s also worth pointing out that in that two game series where Ottawa stole our lunch, DeBrincat was more physical than anyone on the Wings. It’s a low bar, but he’s not a guy that shies away from contact.
Seravalli mentioned us as a team of interest with Mark Scheifele. Guy has been a PPG player since 2016, but he is 30 and going into the final year of his deal. If we could land him without giving up a first (would probably require dealing Berggren and a 2) and also lane DeBrincat, that is a very interesting team. I wouldn’t extend Scheifele for more than five years though, and he might not accept that kind of term.
If somehow Leo Carlsson falls to 5, I hope we do whatever it takes to trade up for him. If that requires 9 and 17, you do it immediately. If Montreal also wants a second, who cares? Rumor is MTL is fielding calls to trade out, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. I would even do it for Michkov, honestly. I would feel better doing it for Carlsson.
