No it’s on him and Bylsma. The structure is a joke. We either dump and chase and lose possession or we do a drop pass to Larkin that everyone knows is coming. There is zero creativity and we cannot maintain possession in the offensive zone because there is no structure.
I think its both. The system they've run is pathetic. Dumping and chasing a man up is pretty awful and the PP seems to have no rhyme or reason about anything they are doing But this team is also getting better turning over forwards for better ones, we went from only 3-4 forwards who have a chance of competing offensively to 6 or so. But when Zadina and Fabbri are out of the lineup, and guys like Filppula, Brome, and Namestikov made up your 2nd line unit, that's not ideal. And I like Brome so far and I think Namestikov could be solid, but they aren't forwards who are playing offensively to a level who should be getting PP time. And Filpulla never should at this point. Rasmussen hasn't shown enough yet, but at least he plays net front. He got over 3 min PP time last night too
Yup. We could have probably beaten that deal if we traded Mantha and Cholowski but I am fine not getting into that kind of return.
Trade makes sense for both of those teams. Glad we didn't do anything crazy on that. Don't want a guy who quits on his team. Especially on a young team that has a bunch of young players coming up in next few years
I don’t get it from a Columbus perspective. They need centers not wingers and they traded a currently problematic center for a currently problematic winger.
Maybe they'll try and flip Laine for a C somewhere else, and just for the time being get out from the PLD drama. Still a rather scuffed situation though.
I think Laine is a pretty good return for a guy who actively gave up on your team. I'm not sure if Laine will have problems there too or not, but I'd guess he was the best player they'd get coming back
This version of the team is as bad as last year. Take Zadina and Fabbri out of the lineup there is again a vast lack of forwards who contribute on offense
I was having a good sunday until this tweet reminded me of this. I think Babcock is a good coach, but I still can't but help feel underwhelmed that with the team he had,he was only able to get 1 cup out of it.
Looking forward to the revised history of Ken Holland. There an award for most overrated GM in history?
Took a 5 on 3 for a minute with a new period so everyone fully rested against a bad team to finally score on PP
Fuck Babcock He wasn’t a good coach. Had unbelievable talent in Detroit and Toronto. And he abused players. Franzen still has issues between concussions and the way Babcock treated him.
Firing a coach during Covid seems problematic, but I think this team has tuned Blashill out. You gotta’ do something.
Yea this teams effort level is in question today. Bad team missing 5 players is one thing, but this effort today is something else Blashill still being the coach may be my least favorite thing yzerman has done so far
Brome was impressive in camp and I thought looked good first few games but I haven't even noticed him last few games. Dont think he has a point yet. When can Fabbri and Zadina come off covid list? Because offense looks extra pathetic looking at lineup when those two aren't in it
Last night was an awful game, but that’s how we are going to play under Blash. The offense is totally broken right now, and it’s not getting better until Zadina (and to a lesser extent Fabbri) is back.
Also, the Athletic did their yearly breakdown breakdowns of rosters by age, heights, weight, etc. We have the second oldest roster in the league still. Obviously the turnover there will be pronounced as soon as next season.
Final post Vince Dunn is available. Rumor is STL wants a first for him, which is a non starter. I would deal a couple of our twos for him though. He would be an incredible partner for Seider going forward.
Part of reason roster is so old is most our recent first round picks we are letting play overseas or are on our taxi roster which I'm not sure counted in their list. I think yzerman saw this year as a chance to start turning over the roster, be a little more competitive but still add a top end player with a high pick. It's frustrating but at least you can see a plan in place and there are some young pieces to be excited about. The lack of development of some guys like Svech, Rasmussen, Cholowski, etc is not good and will slow it down. But I wonder how much of the lack of development comes down to blashill and his style because those guys were all known for their offense. Leaving Blashill in charge is probably the only really negative thing yzerman has done in my mind so far
Some good points and Blashill probably has something to do with it. Obviously the coaching staff has to go. Svech had a lot of bad luck with injuries. Rasmussen has shown improvement and is still young, but is never going to be consistently in the top 6. Cholowski has been poorly managed but will likely never be on the top two pairs consistently. The last two were just bad picks at their spot.
I’d rather use those two 2nds (plus more, probably) to get an additional 1st. Dunn doesn’t blow me away.
Seider crashed hard into the boards near the end of the game. He skated off the ice with some help but it seemed like he might have broken his collarbone at first glance. From what I can see on Twitter, he’s off to the hospital for further evaluation.
At this point I think you could put the Wings on the PP the whole game and maybe they'd score 3 goals?
Watching last night, it seemed like Ras and Hirose were our best players and the advanced numbers prove that out. Also, the advanced numbers haven’t been kind to Brome lately. There is a role for him but he has to be moved from the PP and the top 9.
He has too large of a role and is being asked to do too much. He's a good player, but a solid middle 6. Not playing consistently on the top units.
Well Zadina, Fabbri and a lesser extent Gagner being out plays a role in that. Not blaming all our issues on injuries or covid, but this team doesn't have enough fire power to deal with multiple offensive weapons being out. Especially when Zadina was probably our best player so far this year before going down
Do you have a good primer for hockey analytics? I’m pretty good on baseball, basketball and soccer but feel like I’m drowning every time I read anything on the hockey front.
Namestnikov has also been a disappointment so far. Thought he would be a solid middle 6 forward, 8 games 1 goal 0 assists and a -8 is not what I was expecting Brome and Glendening pointless in 8 games, Helm, Erne and Gagner pointless in a combined 8 games, Filppula one point in 8 games... Still a lot of nothing coming from our bottom lines. Hopefully when Zadina and Fabbri are back we keep playing Ras, Smith and Hirose and sit guys like Fillpula and Nielsen...but I dont have hope we actually do that
