Viro has been quite good in his D+1 year. He will probably stay in Finland one more year, but there is potential there.
I can’t find where he said this, but apparently Nick Kypreos mentioned Werenski wanting to play for the Wings when his deal is up after next season. Problem is, he will still be an RFA, but CBJ’s hands will be tied. I still think he would play anywhere that pays him, but I can speak definitively on the matter that Werenski wants to be a Wing more than anything else. I think Detroit would need to trade to get him though.
Trying to figure out where it will fall. Looks like best case for us would be for the division winners and Florida and Vegas to all be eliminated before the conference finals. Looks like we'd max out at 22nd pick if that happened.
Forgot the coyotes so yea 21 would be best. But realistically higher than that unless everything falls our way
Seems like that cost would be way too prohibitive to trade for him now, given our current situation. Am I wrong?
It would likely be cost prohibitive, but if Werenski makes it known his preference is to play in Detroit, it may drive down the price. It’s unlikely but in this case a lot of people around the league already know his preference.
I'm fine with dealing picks for the right guy. Hell, I'm still holding out hope we do something in RFA this year with Pettersson, even though I know we won't. Anything that involves the young guys of value we've already drafted and started developing just seems like it defeats the purpose because we'd have to replace those guys, too. Until we have a stockpile big enough where redundancy exists, trades like that (involving good young pieces) are kind of hard to justify.
You’re correct. I will say though that Werenski and Seider would probably be our top pairing D for at least seven years. If Seider is what we think he can be, that could end up as one of the five best pairings in the league. It would probably make us a playoff team in 2023. The question is does it impact filling out the rest of the team to make us a contender in 2024 and on?
Unless he gets one tonight, Mantha after going 4 goals in 4 games with Washington about to go 15 games without one to end season
The Wings for Breakfast podcast is no more. That sorta sucks. I thought they had the best Wings content available. I assume Bultman, The Athletic beat reporter, does something in the future more than just writing
Yup. We should get at least 3 solid to good nhl players out of it though. Probably 3/4 statistically based on the picks. I’ll take that any year.
This draft is so weird. People are all over the place people are about just about everyone but Power. I saw the Central Scouting or whatever list came out the other day and had McTavish ranked 2nd among NA skaters. I think Pronman had him in the 20s in his most recent list. I can't remember seeing that big of a discrepancy in a major sport before. Maybe with some QBs in the NFL?
Id say Owen Power seems to have established himself as the #1 pick. I don't think anyone after that is elite but there seems to be a lot of really good players. Kind of sucks at the top of the draft but i think we should be able to get another solid player with the caps 1st
Yeah the QB thing is a good example. It’s just so hard because you had kids from Canada going to Slovakia to get games. I have no idea how you compare that to a kid like Beniers playing a pretty full season against his peer group.
The reasons why make a ton of sense. Just seems like even with that people have guys anywhere in the top 10. I've seen Hughes as high as 1 and as low as 8 or 9. Same with Beniers, Johnson and a few others (although their range seems more like 2-8).
The one positive with the draft is Bob McKenzie’s list is usually pretty spot on because he polls scouts. His final list will help cut through a lot of this noise.
If Montreal wins tonight, we are ensured our Caps pick is one spot better. We can also move up and additional spot if TB beats Carolina.
Everyone moves on to the QF’s. Seider is earning great reviews, especially considering the rest of Germany’s D is just garbage. This isn’t a great tournament this season, but Mo is doing exactly what he should do in this situation.
Considering our familiarity with Frolunda, I think Simon Edvinsson will be a big target at six. We probably won’t know any one prospect better than him. He’s basically the same player as Power, but not with the same ceiling. McKenzie’s poll of scouts had him at #2, so he might not even be an option.
Hughes and Beniers, for me if we're going with hope. Doubt either is there, though. Johnson seems like it depends on whether a team thinks he play play center or not.
Beniers won’t be there, but Clarke might be because teams are concerned about his skating. Clarke was 6 on McKenzie’s list. That seems right to me.
