Realistically, what does this team look like next season? I would guess we re-sign Fabbri now and at very least he is a trade chip for next deadline. Dont see us making a splash for Hall or Pietrangelo. Could maybe see us make a run at Krug, but not sure he would want to come here even if it is his hometown unless we overpaid. Bertuzzi-Larkin-Mantha Fabbri-(UFA) -Zadina Svech-Filppula-Rasmussen Nielsen-Glendening-Helm Abdelkader Where do Erne, Perlini, Ehn and Timashov fit into that picture (all RFA). Would be really nice to get something for Glendening, Helm, Nielsen in the offseason because we all know no one is taking Abby. D is even more a question mark Hronek-(UFA maybe Krug) Dekeyser-Seider Cholowski-Nemeth Bowey? Lindstrom? Wonder if Dekeyser could bring in anything in the offseason. At goalie I would guess we keep Bernier and sign a veteran backup on a one year deal. We have the cash to spend in the offseason, but still have a few bad contracts we need to work out. Wouldn't shock me to have another rebuild year with some younger guys given an opportunity.
If I am the wings I tread water the next 9 games. But the final 9 I am calling up Seider, Svech, Cholowski and Rasmussen and giving them extended minutes to see how they do.
If I had to guess, we only have Seider and Svech from GR to start next year. I think we use the draft to take on a bad deal or two and then look to see about ridding ourselves of Helm and Glendening next TDL. Summer of 2021 is when we make a true splash in FA.
I don't think you buyout Abby next year. We have a ton of cap space, I wouldn't play him next year but waive him to GR. Doesn't help the cap much but it gives PT to others. Buy him out in 2021 instead. If we buy him out next offseason instead of this one, we would be on the hook for one less year and at a lower cap figure. Agree that Helm and Glendening would be trade chips, wonder if we have any takers for Filp or Nielsen (answer is most likely no and for sure no)
Thinking more and more about next season, here is what I think a realistic plan looks like: - Pick #4 (Rossi - Assuming Steutzel goes 3) - Re-sign Mantha, Bertuzzi, Fabbri, Svech, Timashov, Hirose, Bowey and Biega - Sign Radko Gudas - Trade for bad contract (Loui Eriksson) - Trade for a goalie (Korpisalo) - Let just about all the kids play in GR, minus Seider. Wait until post TDL for recalls. - Explore trading the following players at the TDL: Fil, Glendening, Helm, Nemeth, Bernier Enter next year as follows: Bertuzzi - Larkin - Zadina Fabbri - Fil - Mantha Eriksson - Nielsen - Svech Timashov - Glendening - Helm/Abby DeKesyer - Hronek Gudas - Seider Nemeth - Bowey/Biega Bernier Korpisalo In this scenario you have Gudas on his off hand but that’s fine. He’s a big body that can protect Seider. GR turns into Hirose - Rasmussen - Smith Berggren - Veleno - Puempel Elson - Pearson - Terry Whatever Cholowski - Lindstrom McIssac - Wood Hicketts - McIlrath Pickard Larsson And then in 2021 Bertuzzi - Larkin - Zadina Rasmussen - Rossi - Mantha Fabbri - Veleno - Svech Timashov - Pearson - Smith DDK - Seider UFA - Hronek Cholowski - Gudas Korpisalo UFA Of course we probably wouldn’t go that young in 2021 but you get the gist.
Yzerman is saying its important the Griffins make the playoffs so we may not see some younger guys up here before end of season
My hunch is these guys get a few games when Detroit is at home a few days before a Griffins home stand.
If I had to guess (assuming he’s cleared) Seider gets called up to play the 6th vs Chicago. He stays until the 16th, which gives him six games, four at home. He would miss five Griffins games. I think he’s then recalled for the game in St Louis on the 31st to finish the season. That causes him to miss three more games, but he can still return to GR to finish the regular season.
Damn, I hadn't checked in on Rossi in a while and damn he is tearing up the OHL this year. He isnt a bad guy to add as a "worst case scenario "
He is a 25 year old one dimensional player. He’s very good at what he does well, but he’s going to expect a big payday and we are fairly deep at wing.
I'd guess we probably didn't want to pay him as a RFA what he would want. His play style also probably isnt the style yzerman wants. Very one dimensional. He also was extremely streaky. He would look like our best forward for 5-10 game stretches and then go 15 games without scoring (and opponents would score when he was on). Now playing with better linemates will help some, it won't solve all his issues. He's also very reliant on his speed so as he gets older and loses a step he will probably struggle
Im not a huge fan, but he has ties to Yzerman and he should be had for a Nemeth like deal. I also think the team will want to add someone with some grit to be something of a deterrent for Seider. Gudas isn’t a total plug like McIlrath at least.
He’s useful as a bottom pairing D on a cup contender. I don’t see his value to a team that is a year away from competing for a playoff spot.
One takeaway from Yzerman’s PC yesterday was that Seider has been playing 25-27 minutes a night for GR since the WJC. That’s absurd for anyone, let alone an 18 year old.
And we get scored on less than 90 seconds in. Now that we have the tank secured I wouldn’t mind if our offense showed some signs of life.
At this point I would die for a few wins, but if we can only have one more game this season, it needs to be the Leafs game.
When you only dress 11 forwards and Abdelkader, Ehn, Perlini, Nielsen, Glendening, Helm, and Filppula are 7 of them, not likely to happen tonight
Some 5'9" kid who just injured a guy with knee injury history by a cheap shot hit. Little punk deserves something in return
I’ll never understand what happened to Abdelkader. I don’t mean offensively, that was obvious. My issue is he literally only throws his body around when games are over anymore. It’s embarrassing tough guy bullshit that has zero impact on the game.
He also tried to play the body on the puck handler in open ice today, whiffed and created a 3 on 1. Luckily Bernier saved that one He is literally useless. He does nothing well
He was nowhere near this awful last year and we have literally no one in our system ready to replace him.
How many of our current players in the lineup tonight make a 23 man roster on a contending team? Larkin, Mantha, Bertuzzi, Hronek and Bernier as a backup goalie? Maybe Helm and Glendening as 4th liners?
Cholowski is probably on a bus back to GR tonight after the game A penalty and -4 in 15 minutes tonight
