If he didn't play, would he go to LTIR like Franzen? Or would we be screwed by the 35+ thing and take a massive cap hit this year?
He would go on LTIR but it would probably piss the league off considering he made a comment about such a scenario playing out before last season.
Do you know what that cap hit would be if he just retired? I know we need to resign some guys this offseason, but it seems like if we could take the hit this year while saving something in the following 2 seasons would be a decent trade off at this point unless that cap # cost us one of the young guys we don't want to move.
No relief at all. If he retires now we are on the hook for 6.1 mil each of the next three years. He gets paid 3.5 mil in real dollars his year with 1 mil each of the following two years, is the likelihood is this would be his last year if he does play. How we fanagle LTIR remains to be seen, but I mean the Hawks pulled it off with Hossa, so there is that.
I thought there was something with the rules where there was a cap hit if you signed someone to one of these massive long term deals that went beyond age 35 and they retired. Am I think of something else? Or maybe I just misunderstood it. I thought it came up especially after the Weber/Subban deal because of the length of Weber's contract.
The Z part aside, I would much rather give young guys a shot instead of bringing in a 34 year old Filppula who is 4 years removed from a better than average season
If Z goes on IR we should try to trade Gus now. His stock will plummet drastically without Hank. We will probably need to keep AA as well. Assuming we Z does go on LTIR and we do something foolish like sign Fil back, here is what I have for lines: Mantha - Larkin - Zadina Gus - Nielsen - AA Rasmussen - Fil - Bertuzzi Abby - Glendening - Helm/Witowski/Turgeron God that is awful. I don’t think you can start Ras at C yet, but you may have no choice due to our depth. I hope Z can even give us half a season to help get the kids up to speed.
Wings could just be playing the long game and letting this leak a little on Hank so they don’t catch too much shit for him “retiring” next year but going on LTIR
We don't have the center depth to do that - the point Custance made was that Flip would be a stop-gap solution for a year or two until Ras is ready. In all likelihood, we will probably have Larkin-Ras-Velleno as our 3 centers in a year or two...I don't hate it. If we keep AA we would be looking at Mantha, AA, Zedina and Svech as our top 6 wingers...maybe Bert? As much as I like AA's skill it seems to be making more and more sense to move him in a package to get a top-pair defenseman.
Hard to copy and past but in this link there is a table on consensus draft rankings from 24 different sources. https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2018/6/20/17486908/draft-consensus-rankings-part-2 Wings ended up with consensus 3, 11, 28 and 30th ranked guys. Days removed and I am still surprised how well that turned out
If you believe Khan, we are going to add Bernier (3 year deal), Re-Sign Green (2 year deal) and are looking at also bring back Filp and Vanek. Those moves sound like Ken Holland moves
Custance doesn’t think a deal with Fil happens, so that’s fine. Ideally, we would deal AA and Jensen to clear some room for some kids, presuming Vanek signs.
The thing I don’t like about Green signing is that he likely turned down equal or better offers from contenders because of his off ice situation here. That usually means he’s getting some type of trade protection. We can’t keep doing that shit.
Turns out Zadina was loaned to Halifax by his Czech team. That makes him eligible for the AHL. I still think he makes the big club out of camp but that’s intriguing.
Holland's job is also to put a product on the ice that people will watch. Despite the desire to serve the future at all costs, he has to have other considerations.
It could work Z-Larkin-Mantha Vanek-Nielsen-Nyquist Zadina-AA-Ras Bert-Helm-Abby And throw in Frk and Glendening as 2 extra forwards for when Z/Helm get hurt. Thing I would worry about is Ras/Zadina being thrown down to the 4th line and not get much of a chance to play from the signing
Why is it annoying? He will probably suck and lend you another top five pick or he will be great and he is still young enough to become a valuable asset. I have no confidence in him at all, but that move is free with only upsides. Smart imo
He’s taking time away from a younger player. No thanks. He’s not going to bring much a deadline either because any contender could have signed his washed up ass.
Ras and Zadina can still make the lineup even with him added. Svech doesn't seem ready yet to be honest and you know between Helm and Z another forward spot will open up during the season. They also want him on a line with AA from what I am reading, AA played his best hockey on a line with Vanek. You could get a mid round pick for Vanek at the deadline I am sure unless he completely falls off this season.
Vanek has a NTC because of course. That said, I am sure he would waive it. Probably just means we can expect a 6 instead of a 5 at the deadline.
