Not sure WAR is the appropriate metric, since our replacement would be far below "replacement level".
For sure. No one seems to know what the cause of the nerve issue is. If they can find the cause and see for sure there's no other damage there, it's not bad because it gives a reason for his struggles over the last 5 weeks.
I'm not a doctor and have no clue what it means, but Fulmer's doctors appear to think this is decent news.
Matt Manning with another promising start in low A ball. 5 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 9 K, no runs. Looks like his fastball is still sitting low 90's, but he can amp it up to 94-95 when he wants to. Next year will be huge for his development. I bet him and Faedo start in Lakeland. Burrows and Perez probably in AA again, although Perez could get a quick bump to Toledo.
Anyone have a list of potential managerial candidates for next year? I wouldn't be opposed to bringing Ausmus back since we are going to blow. What about Mike Rabelo?
I kind of expect Ausmus to keep the job. The team hasn't quit on him, they just suck. And I feel like we're just going to get a retread if we have to have a manager search.
Only way Faedo doesn't start in Lakeland is if they do a solid to the WM affiliate and give him a few starts business reasons. My guess is Funkhouser also starts in Lakeland, although he could be bumped quickly to Erie after a lost second half this year. Manning almost certainly starts in WM. I'd be surprised if he's in Lakeland before the ASB, at the earliest. He's got long a ways to go and just getting innings somewhere is important for him. He's always been a project with a huge upside. No point in rushing him. Burrows starts in Erie, and he might be the one I can see with the big club at the end of the season, although (again) they won't rush him. Perez has been coddled in Houston with low pitch and innings counts. He's been challenged in terms of assignment (19 years old in AA right now), but he's only thrown 86 innings after 67 last year. Even if he's great all year, he's going to get shut down after 120ish innings, which likely means he won't be pitching in September for a late call up. Now that we suck, service time comes into play with all of them. The only reason they'll have to start that MLB clock with any of them will be ticket sales (which is likely to be a legit concern the next few years). Outside of that, it makes no business sense to call them up unless they think they're ready to succeed.
We're currently tied with NYM for the 5th worst record in the league. Given our September rotation, we would seem to have a pretty good shot at going below Cinci, which is currently .5 below us for fourth worst. Bottom three is probably out of reach unless we only win 5 or 6 games the rest of the way.
Yeah, shitty thing is we play 7 games against Oakland and Chicago. I went through schedule yesterday and 10-11 wins seems like most likely outcome. And hopefully Norris figures it out. You know he's bad when he's pitching out of the bullpen, with all these hacks we have in the starting rotation.
The Tigers' officials who went to Verlander's house to get his signature saying he was waiving his no-trade waited in a car outside his house for over an hour before Verlander agreed. Hope they had a good stake out mix.
He finished with 13 balls, 9 strikes without recording an out. First two pitches were balls, but called strikes. He's broken.
Norris needs to be shut down for the season and find a life coach or something to pick him up. This is reaching mental breakdown levels.
Now is the perfect time to throw him. Thing is you risk ruining him even more than we already have. On the other hand, if he has 2-3 nice outings to end season, he has whole different mind set going into next year. Right now we can't count on him 2018.
If we're counting the number of players we can count on for 2018, could we get to 10? I'm not sure I can get to 7.
Beyond Fulmer, Greene, MAhtook. And McCann that's about it. And McCann is a sub par defender, but he's the best we got. Nick, Iglesias, and Kinsler will probably be dealt. Forgot about Miggy. Yeah hopefully he shows up next year
we really need a big bounce back year from Cabrera next year. That way we can throw in about $100MM and dump his contract. I'm sure someone would take him on for 15 a season
http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php I don't know what any of those stats mean, but he's last.
I don't know what those catcher stats mean, either. People are buying more and more into pitch framing stats in recent years, but I think the general belief is that no one really has much of a clue in terms of how to quantify catcher defense yet. He could be the best or worst defensive catcher in the league and I probably couldn't tell much of a difference. I've always thought he was pretty good, but admittedly that was based almost entirely on minor league scouting reports and the CS% the last few years. I would love to find a platoon mate for him long term. He's Mike Trout v. LHP and Jose Iglesias v. RHP.
I have no clue what that means, but that sucks. Also takes away any chance of interesting trade rumors with him this winter.
Also big week for team tank. We are sitting in good position right now with 4th pick. 2-5 week would be ideal. Get swept by Cleveland, and find a way to only win two against Chicago.
