Admittedly not a college baseball guy but actually played beer pong with Alvarez when we went to visit my friends old roommate. Price was apparently there too (though he was already out to the program) and I had no idea who he was. Needless to say, I was extremely fucked up.
Bring on Tork! People who know more than me, who are some guys we want to drop a little so they are available with our 2nd round pick?
Just get familiar with seniors that played in the SEC. If they are position players, they won’t have much of a bat. If they are pitchers, they will be bullpen arms.
https://www.freep.com/story/sports/...son-detroit-tigers-2020-mlb-draft/5335352002/ Free Press agrees with you, two SEC players
is the kid from Detroit going to get drafted today? Didn't see much on his draft status after a quick search.
Depending on how high some other draft picks get ranked, Tigers could have 5 top 50 prospects according to MLB pipeline after the draft. Mize is currently 7 Manning 24 Greene 31 Skubal 46 (could fall out of top 50 after draft) Rutschman is #4 and Vaughn is #16, so id guess Torkelson will fall somewhere between those two.
Save everyone some trouble: "Fieri co-owns three restaurants in California, and Torkelson's mother, Lori, is his chief financial officer."
They'll throw him out there. I don't think he'll stick there, and I hope it's a short lived idea. Trying to make him a 3B adds minor league time to his future that he hopefully won't need. Taking a 1B with the first pick isn't ideal, but I'd rather have a good defensive 1B (if he is one) with his bat than a mediocre or worse 3B or LF with his bat. WAR says the difference in value isn't much, but I'd rather find good players who can actually play those positions well.
Funny people arguing position in the Martin v Tork debate, there is a decent chance Tork plays 3b and Martin 2b.
I think the question is more about how long it takes him to be decent there more than whether he could learn to play it well enough to do it in the big leagues. If he needs 2 years of work at the position to be able to do it in the big leagues, he'll move back to 1B because they won't wait that long. My guess is we'll find out the answer to that in spring training next year.
Sounds like he had no idea they were going to announce him as. 3rd basemen. Just said he played all over diamond as little kid, and will do his best over there.
There seems to be a pretty significant belief that there will be an Arizona Fall League this year, and that they'll try to make it longer than normal. If that happens, I'd be shocked if Torkelson isn't there.
I would like to get it on the record that I prefer just letting him play a good 1B and rake instead Castellanosing him into the nuthosuse.
Is there some motive for Avila announcing him as a 3rd baseman. The more I think of it, it just doesn’t make sense.
I'm guessing we're going mostly the college route tomorrow, with maybe a HS kid either with our bonus pick after round 2 or our 3rd rounder. I'm guessing we take one of these 5 guys at 38... Daniel Cabrera, OF, LSU Casey Martin, SS, Arkansas Dillon Dingler, C, Ohio State CJ Van Eyk, RHP, FSU Cole Henry, RHP, LSU
Probably should have added JT Ginn there, although I'm not sure how much he's looking for to sign coming off TJ.
Not sure what the deal is there, but I think I'd rather just take college guys for slot than pay him $3M+ and have to take discounts with some of the other picks. I'm assuming he'd be looking for at least something in the $3-4M range for a bonus, and I'm not sure he's worth that at this point.
dingler seems like no brainer considering we don’t have any catching prospects worth a shit in the minors.
